Has he leapfrogged him at Anfield Already?

Liverpool have started the season fairly slowly, picking up just one point from their opening three league goals and hitting the back of the net just twice, but along with Raheem Sterling, Jonjo Shelvey has proven himself to be a young player capable of making the step up and he may have just usurped Jordan Henderson in the pecking order at the club already.

So far this season, Shelvey has featured twice in the league and four times in Europe, which when you compared it to the fact that all of Henderson’s appearances so far have come in the Europa League and it becomes clear which player Brendan Rodgers trusts more.

In both games, the new boss had a change forced upon him somewhat, with Lucas Leiva pulling up through injury against Manchester City, Shelvey came on in the fifth minute and adjusted brilliantly and settled into the match, helping Joe Allen control the midfield. He went on to complete 88% of his passes, with 44 of his 50 attempts finding a team-mate and it was by far his most accomplished display in a red shirt to date yet.

Shelvey sounded enthusiastic about Rodgers vision and his own part to play in that just the other day: “He’s given me a fair crack of the whip and I finally have a chance to prove my worth. The way the manager likes us to play football suits me down to the ground. I just want to keep going now. As well as myself he’s given Adam Morgan, Raheem Sterling and a few others a chance to get into the team.”

Ever since signing from Charlton back in 2010, as one of Rafa Benitez’s last moves at the club, he has been highly regarded by both Roy Hodgson and Kenny Dalglish but was used sparingly until the end of last term, when during the midst of a league slump, he was handed a longer run in the side, with a goalscoring performance in the 4-1 win over Chelsea at home the most impressive.

Not only is he capable of keeping the ball for prolonged periods, he also offers a more direct threat, as he showed in England’s U-21 game against Azerbaijan last week where he set up one and scored the other in a crucial 2-0 victory, winning man of the match in the process.as well as myself he’s given Adam Morgan, Raheem Sterling and a few others a chance to get into the team.

Henderson, though, appears to be little more than a Europa League player at present, given a run out to rest the likes of Steven Gerrard and Lucas Leiva for league duty. There was a hope that under a new manager, one who had talked positively about his potential and ability in the past, that he may flourish this term with less pressure on him, but it just hasn’t happened so far.

If reports are to be believed, both Henderson and Stewart Downing were offered in part exchange to Fulham for Clint Dempsey as the clock ticked down on transfer deadline day, which in itself points to a limited future at Anfield for the 21-year-old, as the club continued to grapple with a lack of funds.

The new manager seems determined to make his own mark on the side and he hasn’t been shy in marginalising the big-money purchases of the previous regime, with Andy Carroll moved out on loan to West Ham and Stewart Downing now in the process of being converted into a left-back; there’s a worry that Henderson may fall into this trap too.

There’s no denying that he struggled for long spells last campaign and that he’s always going to struggled to justify the weighty £16m fee, but Henderson is a composed, disciplined and most importantly, still young player with plenty of potential. As much as Shelvey’s rise to prominence at the beginning of this season has been a welcoming sight to see, the continued reluctance to start Henderson in the league is a bugbear.

A new manager is supposed to solve problems that have carried over from the previous regime and with a strict budget this term, the emphasis on Rodgers getting every last drop out of his existing squad is equally as important.

However, there’s a sense that instead of tackling how best to go about integrating the likes of Downing, Carroll and Henderson into his side, that he’s just taken the easy route and given up on them at the first sign of trouble and the arrival of Nuri Sahin will not help his chances of breaking into the side one little bit.

Shelvey clearly has a bright future at Anfield and he appears to have bought into Rodgers methods of retaining possession quickly, but there’s a concern that Henderson is being tarred with the same brush as other failures despite his age and he’s most definitely on the fringes of the first-team now, behind his England U-21 colleague.

Fulham star set to be released

Fulham defender John Arne Riise is set to leave the West London club on a free, as reported by Sky Sports.

The Norwegian left back has been a prominent figure in the Premier League over the past ten years with his time at Liverpool being the real highlight.

The red-headed attacking full back failed to make much of an impact at Craven Cottage last season and boss Martin Jol has told Riise he is no longer needed.

The 32 year old has featured in the majority of Fulham’s pre-season games so is fully fit and raring to go for the new season despite seemingly not having a club.

A move to the Bundesliga has been touted this week with Werder Bremen the likely destination however a number of Premier League clubs will be interested in Riise’s hefty left foot and may make a move to keep the defender in England.

“Yes, it looks like I will be parting company with Fulham this summer,” Riise said.

“Fortunately there is an agreement for there to be no transfer fee, so let’s see what the rest of the transfer window brings.”

Newcastle must swoop for Osimhen

Newcastle United have been linked with a summer swoop for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, who is also subject to interest from the Magpies’ Premier League rivals Manchester United.

What’s the latest?

According to Italian outlet Il Mattino, the Newcastle hierarchy are keen on bringing the 23-year-old to the northeast in the summer, with the required transfer fee expected to be hefty.

The Serie A outfit signed the Nigerian striker from French side Lille in September 2020 for a reported fee of around €80m, but the Italian club are looking to cash in.

It’s no secret that PIF are planning to spend big money in the summer, should United’s Premier League survival be confirmed, and the addition of Osimhen would be a major statement from the Tyneside outfit.

Newcastle must sign Osimhen

Eddie Howe’s side have been in exceptional form of late, winning five of their last six Premier League matches. However, none of the ten goals scored during this run have come from £25m January signing Chris Wood.

The New Zealand international is yet to find the back of the net since swapping Turf Moor for St.James’ Park in January and already looks to have been a waste of funds.

Granted, the Geordies desperately needed a striker with Callum Wilson injured, but seem likely to quickly turn their attention away from the 30-year-old and onto the possibility of adding a bigger name to their ranks.

The Nigeria international has seen his campaign halted by a cheekbone fracture suffered in November that ruled the striker out of playing at the African Cup of Nations.

Regardless, the £54m-rated 23-year-old has still managed to score 11 goals in 22 appearances across all competitions so far for Napoli, already an improvement of last season’s tally of ten in 24 matches.

Earlier this campaign, Osimhen was showered with praise from Cagliari coach Walter Mazzari, who labelled the striker as “phenomenal.”

Moreover, in his sole campaign at Lille, the forward netted 18 goals and registered six assists in 38 appearances, earning him the big-money move to Naples.

However, striker won’t be the only position that Newcastle look to strengthen, but they already have quality out wide in Allan Saint-Maximin, who will only improve with a striker like Osimhen to create chances for.

The 24-year-old has been a revelation since his move to Tyneside from Nice in summer 2019, scoring 12 goals and registering 14 assists in 82 appearances for a side that, during the majority of his spell, have been low-scoring and rigid.

Five of the Frenchman’s goals have come this campaign, alongside three assists, making the winger Newcastle’s second top-scorer behind Wilson, who has six goals to his name.

The prospect of Saint-Maximin and Osimhen playing alongside one another will be a mouth-watering concept for Newcastle fans and those at the top responsible for transfers should certainly target the Nigerian as a worthwhile asset to invest in.

Rangers struck gold with Helander signing

Rangers have not been shy when it comes to dipping into the transfer market and bringing new players to Ibrox who they feeel can improve and strengthen their team wherever possible over the past few years.

As tends to be the case with all clubs, not all transfers end up being particularly successful. However, one deal at Ibrox which can be seen as a rewarding one for the club is their move for Filip Helander.

The Gers signed the centre-back from Bologna during the 2019 summer transfer window. Since then, the 28-year-old has gone on to make 57 appearances across all competitions, chipping in with seven goals and one assist along the way, a decent return for a centre-back.

Last season saw the Sweden international, who was praised for his “outstanding” positional play by former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard, make 31 appearances across all competitions, with 21 of those coming in the Premiership.

In those league appearances, Helander averaged 1.7 tackles (the second-highest of any player in the squad) and 2.2 clearances per game, putting him in the top three for that statistic. Those returns highlight how important he was in the club’s title charge from a defensive point of view.

Shortly after making the move to Glasgow from Italy, Transfermarkt had the defender’s market value listed at £1.8m. It now stands at £3.15m, showing an increase of 75%, which you’d imagine is largely down to his efforts last season. This also shows what a great bit of business it was from the club to bring him to Ibrox.

Unfortunately, the centre-back hasn’t had much luck this season after picking up a serious knee injury back in September which has kept him sidelined until recently.

If the defender can maintain his fitness for the remainder of the campaign and get back to the sort of form he showed in Rangers’ title-winning season, he could have a big part to play in their chase to retain the Premiership title this time around.

Newcastle make contact over Pino

Newcastle United have enquired about Villarreal wonderkid Yeremy Pino, according to Spanish sources (via Sport Witness).

The lowdown

19-year-old Pino is predominantly a right winger but is also capable of playing on the left flank.

He’s made 34 appearances for Villarreal this season in all competitions, scoring seven goals and providing four assists.

The Spaniard is one of the most heavily-used teenagers in Europe’s top five leagues this season.

Valued at £27million by Transfermarkt, Pino still has more than five years remaining on his contract with The Yellow Submarine.

The latest

The report (via SW) states that Newcastle have ‘made contact’ with Villarreal over a potential deal for Pino.

They face competition from Mikel Arteta and Arsenal, who have also established a dialogue with the Spanish club.

Newcastle have not yet decided whether they’ll pursue Pino, but if they do so, they may have to pay his €80million (£67.1million) release clause.

The verdict

Pino underlined that he was a ‘special talent’, in the words of Fabrizio Romano, by bagging four goals in a 5-1 win over Espanyol last month. He became the youngest player in history to score a La Liga first-half hat-trick.

There is, however, an interesting sub-plot here. Newcastle, of course, came close to appointing Villarreal boss Unai Emery after they sacked Steve Bruce.

Could that lead to some friction between the two clubs? Villarreal president Fernando Roig Sr was apparently left ‘upset’ by the situation, while some figures at the club were surprised by leaks to the UK press on the day of a ‘big’ Champions League game against Young Boys (via The Athletic).

Newcastle could, of course, simply pay the release clause, but that would mean obliterating their £39.6million transfer record. Ideally, they could negotiate a lower fee, but that may depend on the state of relations.

Elsewhere, Newcastle have received ‘really good’ news before Southampton.

Spiers bemoans ‘atrocious’ Wolves defending

Journalist Tim Spiers was left hugely unimpressed with Wolves’ defending in their crazy 3-2 defeat at home to Leeds United on Friday evening.

The Lowdown: Wolves stunned by Leeds

Bruno Lage’s side suffered a damaging loss in the Premier League as their European hopes took an almighty hit at Molineux.

Wolves led 2-0 at half-time after well-taken efforts from Jonny and Francisco Trincao, only for Raul Jimenez’s red card to turn the game completely. Jack Harrison, Rodrigo and Luke Ayling all found the net to complete a sensational comeback for Leeds, with the Old Gold left to rue a missed opportunity.

The Latest: Spiers unhappy with Wolves’ defending

Taking to Twitter after the match, Spiers couldn’t hide his disappointment at Wolves’ defensive collapse.

He lamented: “Mental game of football. Wolves 2-0 up when Jimenez sent off for a 50-50 foul he was trying to avoid making. But the fact is Wolves’ defending after that was absolutely atrocious.”

[freshpress-quiz id=“388797″]

The Verdict: Fell to pieces

Spiers makes a fair point, with Wolves simply not defending well enough from the moment that Jimenez was sent off, even though playing with a one-man disadvantage was certainly not ideal.

The hosts managed the game poorly, not taking time out of the game when they needed to do so, and the manner of all three of Leeds’ goals were chaotic.

The hope now is that this defeat doesn’t completely knock the stuffing out of Lage and his players between now and May, with the international break arguably coming at a good time, allowing them to reset ahead of the season’s run-in.

In other news, Spiers has also bemoaned a key Wolves-related update regarding one player. Read more here.

West Ham: Hammers to ‘battle’ for Botman

West Ham are set to battle for the signing of LOSC Lille centre-back Sven Botman according to a report from the Northern Echo.

The lowdown: Wanted man

Botman played an integral part in the Lille side that lifted the Ligue 1 title in 2020/21 and was hailed as a ‘top player’ by defensive partner Jose Fonte, helping to keep 20 clean sheets.

He earned an impressive 7.08 average match rating from 37 league outings in the process (Sofascore), and has even earned praise from the legendary Paolo Maldini for his form in the last couple of years.

The 22-year-old has already attracted attention from Liverpool and AC Milan in the past and now is the subject of further interest from the English top flight.

The latest: Hammers join the race

As per the report from NE, West Ham are set to ‘battle’ for the capture of the Netherlands youth international.

It’s claimed that whilst Newcastle United remain in the hunt, the east London club will offer ‘stiff competition’ in the summer transfer window.

Having failed in an attempt to land Duje Caleta-Car in January, it’s stated that West Ham are ‘set to switch their attentions’ to Botman.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-developments-4/” title=”West Ham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The verdict: Solid investment

Irons’ boss David Moyes is believed to have ‘identified’ a left-sided central defender as a top priority and it’s easy to see why Lille’s colossal young Dutchman is among the leading contenders.

Described as a ‘golden boy’ by Francesco Miniero, Botman has gone from strength to strength in an exciting career to date and looks perfectly suited to bolster the defensive ranks at the London Stadium.

Standing at 6’4 and strong in the air (WhoScored), so far this season the ex-Ajax man has scored three times in 21 league appearances, proving to be equally impactful in both penalty boxes.

Valued at £27million and under contract in France until 2025 (Transfermarkt), signing the Dutchman will be an expensive venture but certainly a worthwhile one.

West Ham interested in ‘huge talent’. Read more here.

West Ham struck gold on Vladimir Coufal

West Ham United have seen many players sign to the east London club over the past few years under GSB’s ownership.

While not all of the deals that have been completed at the London Stadium can be described as being totally successful, one player that the Hammers certainly hit the jackpot with is defender Vladimir Coufal.

Signed towards the end of the 2020 summer transfer window in a deal worth a reported fee of £5.4m from Slavia Prague, the right-back has gone on to make 62 appearances for David Moyes’ side across all competitions, providing an impressive number of 11 assists along the way.

His debut season with the Hammers saw the Czech international play in 34 of their 38 league games and immediately show what he’s made of by racking up the joint-highest number of tackles per game (2.1) alongside his club and country teammate Tomas Soucek.

The defender’s overall performances in that campaign earned him a solid season rating of 6.95, making him their fifth-highest rated player according to WhoScored.

This backs up what Kevin Campbell had to say about the full-back, who is currently picking up a weekly wage of £27k-per-week according to Salary Sport, when he called him a “revelation” for the Hammers.

Even the club quickly recognised what a standout player they had on their hands by offering him a new deal just a year after he initially arrived.

Despite not being as prominent in the team as he was last season with just 19 league starts to his name, the 29-year-old has still shown how useful he can be for the team up and down the pitch by providing three assists and racking up 1.7 tackles per game.

In July 2020, shortly before he made the move to England, Transfermarkt rated Coufal’s market value listed at £1.8m, whereas it now stands at £10.8m, showing a massive increase of 500%, based on what he’s delivered for the east London club since his arrival.

Taking all of this into account, it’s safe to say out of all the moves that have taken place at West Ham under their current ownership, bringing Coufal to the London Stadium has been one of the more positive and successful ones.

Manchester United: Dean Jones drops manager update

Transfer insider Dean Jones has provided a Manchester United managerial update, name-checking Ajax boss Erik ten Hag, GiveMeSport report.

The Lowdown: Four candidates?

The Red Devils appear to be making a head start on what could be a major summer shake-up, with Old Trafford chiefs talking with Ten Hag earlier this month.

Discussions with the Dutchman were thought to be ‘positive’, however, the 52-year-old isn’t the only boss on United’s radar.

Mauricio Pochettino, Julen Lopetegui and Luis Enrique are also thought to be considered as options to replace Ralf Rangnick in the summer, with the interim boss set to move into a consultancy role.

The Latest: Jones’ comments

Talking to GiveMeSport, Jones believes Ten Hag is the ‘most likely’ appointment over the coming months and revealed that the end of the current international break is crucial in regards to which direction United would head in.

“I still think that it’s most likely to be ten Hag, but there’s no decision announced yet. The aim was that by the end of this international break, at least the people within the club knew where they were heading, and then they would announce it publicly at a later stage.”

The Verdict: More talks soon?

Ten Hag is the only manager we know at this moment in time that United have spoken to, so you’d expect that Red Devils chiefs could be extremely busy over the next few weeks.

They may decide to talk with the likes of Pochettino, Lopetegui and Enrique or even speak further with Ten Hag, especially as he was recently approached by two more clubs.

Having a new manager in place ahead of the summer would be extremely handy, as it would give him the time to analyse the squad and talk with Rangnick over possible targets. Hopefully, the club can get a deal in place before the end of May, and avoid the chaos of entering the transfer market without a proper structure in place beforehand.

Tottenham ready to offer Antoine Semenyo huge salary to shatter wage structure

Tottenham’s campaign has descended into minor chaos following Sunday’s humiliating 3-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest, leaving Thomas Frank fighting to get fans back on side.

The club are also simultaneously planning January recruitment, as confirmed by Frank himself, and the under-fire tactician may be in grave need of it.

The Dane’s struggling side have managed just one victory across their last seven Premier League games, tasting six defeats from 16 to languish in mid-table.

Sunday’s comprehensive loss at the City Ground represented arguably Frank’s worst performance since arriving from Brentford, with his team thoroughly outplayed and managing only one shot on target in 90 minutes.

It is a far cry from where they want to be after winning the Europa League last season, and Spurs’ lack of creativity going forward has been a key theme of their campaign at times.

Tottenham hold loose talks to sign "strong" Man City player amid worry over mainstay

He’s apparently keen on a move.

ByEmilio Galantini

Pressure continues mounting on Frank’s shoulders despite the board publicly backing him.

ENIC and the Lewis family injected £100 million of fresh capital into the club in October, signaling their commitment to supporting the manager despite growing frustrations among supporters.

Frank has stated that Tottenham will “definitely” be active when the window opens, hoping for signings as early as possible.

Work apparently began immediately after September’s deadline, with recruitment meetings establishing comprehensive target lists across every position.

However, wingers are rumoured to be the primary focus, despite Dominic Solanke’s prolonged injury absence and inconsistent contributions from Richarlison, Randal Kolo Muani and Mathys Tel.

Chief among their targets is Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo, with Fabrizio Romano confirming that Spurs have aggressively pursued the Ghanaian in recent days.

Now, TEAMtalk have shared just how far they’re willing to go to win the race for his signature before Man City, Liverpool and Man United.

Tottenham now prepared to make Semenyo their highest-paid player

Indeed, it is now believed that Tottenham are prepared to shatter their wage structure in a bold attempt to secure the Cherries winger, even making him their highest-paid player.

Sources indicate Spurs have emerged as the “most active” suitor for the 25-year-old in recent days, with Frank viewing him as a potentially transformational addition to his struggling forward line.

Bournemouth have inserted a £65 million release clause into his deal which becomes active on January 1 — available only during a limited early-window period before dropping to £50 million next summer.

However, City remain the frontrunners despite Tottenham’s financial firepower.

ManchesterCitymanager Pep Guardiola before the match

Pep Guardiola’s side have maintained steady dialogue with Semenyo’s representatives, with personal terms understood to be ‘advanced’.

Liverpool continue monitoring developments closely, with Arne Slot an admirer of Semenyo’s high-pressing capabilities. Man United have also made enquiries, but trail the leading trio in negotiations.

Bournemouth prefer retaining their standout performer until next summer when the reduced clause activates, though they accept a big-money exit is inevitable.

The club have already identified FC Basel’s Philip Otele as a potential replacement should Semenyo depart, which looks increasingly likely as Spurs and their top-flight rivals up the ante.
