Former Aston Villa captain Gabby Agbonlahor has been reacting to an update regarding midfielder Douglas Luiz, Football Insider report.
The Lowdown: Luiz wants Arsenal move
Luiz was a late summer target for Arsenal, who reportedly made three bids for the Brazilian, but, as we know, NSWE and Villa stood firm and the defensive midfielder remained in the Midlands beyond the deadline.
However, Luiz, who is into the final 12 months of his Villa Park contract, is still keen on a move to the Emirates and has apparently even told friends he wants to sign for the Gunners.
Villa have held talks with the 24-year-old over fresh terms but are yet to reach an agreement.
The Latest: Agbonlahor reacts
Agbonlahor, who contributes for Sky Sports, was talking to FI regarding the update on Luiz.
The former Villa man said he can’t see Luiz extending his Villa stay due to interest from Arsenal, saying he can’t be blamed for wanting to move to a side challenging in Europe.
“I don’t think he’ll sign a new contract now.
“When you know Arsenal are in for you and you know you’ve only got a year left, you’ll see that year out and go on a free transfer.
“That’s what I would do if I had my eyes on a move to a club that is fighting for the Champions League or European football.
“You can’t blame him on that, no. I just don’t see him signing a new contract, to be honest.”
The Verdict: Time to sell
Should Luiz’s situation remain the same, you’d expect that Arsenal could revisit their interest in the New Year when the player will be into the final six months of his deal.
That winter window could be the last chance Villa have to receive a fee for the midfielder, labelled as ‘important’ by Pep Guardiola, so it may make sense for the club to cash in.
Of course, a replacement will be needed if Luiz moves on, so it might be wise for Villa to look far and wide for a new holding midfielder over the coming months.
Injuries at Newcastle United are proving to be a ‘real problem’ for Magpies manager Eddie Howe, according to pundit Paddy Kenny.
The Lowdown: Key players out
The Tyneside club have been unlucky with injuries so far this season, with some of their most important players seemingly unavailable for various reasons at the same time as one another.
According to medical expert Ben Dinnery on 2nd September, 2021/22 top scorer Callum Wilson may not feature again until after the international break in October due to his latest hamstring injury.
Alongside their number nine, midfielder Bruno Guimaraes and winger Allan Saint-Maximin have both been absent for the Magpies’ last three and two league matches respectively, leaving Howe’s side without a league win since the opening day triumph over Nottingham Forest.
The Latest: Kenny’s claim
In light of Newcastle’s setbacks, Kenny believes that the Magpies have been very much affected, claiming that those who have deputised aren’t of the same quality as the players who are ruled out.
Speaking with Football Insider, the former QPR goalkeeper claimed: “Every club misses their best players. I think it is a real problem for Newcastle though. You are talking about three quality players all being out injured at the same time.
“Saint-Maximin makes things happen and we all know how good Bruno is. Wilson seems to be the only Newcastle player who knows how to score consistently.
“So it is no surprise to me to see them struggle without those players in there. You just hope they can come back as soon as possible because the players who are replacing them just aren’t up to scratch.”
The Verdict: No need to panic
Whilst Howe will be disappointed that his team have only won one Premier League game so far this season, the Tynesiders have also lost just once, adding four draws to their seven-point tally.
Wilson’s absence will always be heavily felt by Newcastle, given their reliance on him for goals. Indeed, despite playing just 18 top-flight games last season, the 30-year-old was the Magpies’ top scorer with eight goals, with Saint-Maximin and Guimaraes coming in joint-second with five goals each.
Therefore, with that crucial trio possibly nearing their returns from injury later this month, Newcastle will be hoping to make an immediate response to their disappointing recent results.
Over the years, Manchester United have become known for their impressive young talents, with many of whom cementing their place within the first-team squad.
From players breaking through the academy to big-money additions, the Red Devils faithful have been truly blessed and have had the chance to experience numerous elite-level talents.
At present, Ruben Amorim has massively utilised Leny Yoro, after the Frenchman joined the club in a mammoth £52m deal last summer despite being just 18.
However, his importance to the manager simply cannot be overstated, with the 20-year-old featuring in every single Premier League game of the 2025/26 campaign.
The same can’t be said for every youngster currently in the first-team at Old Trafford, especially with one talent who is seemingly out of favour at present.
The future of Kobbie Mainoo at Man Utd
Just a couple of years ago, Kobbie Mainoo was one of, if not the most important player within the Manchester United first-team squad, but he’s endured a huge decline in recent seasons.
He made his breakthrough in the 2023/24 campaign, scoring vital goals against Manchester City in the FA Cup final and even netting a worldie against bitter rivals Liverpool.
Such form enabled him to secure a place at Euro 2024 with the England squad, subsequently featuring in all but two matches during the competition.
However, Amorim’s arrival at Old Trafford last November has seen a huge drop in his first-team minutes, with the manager evidently not a fan of the 20-year-old.
In 2025/26 alone, Mainoo has failed to make a single league start, subsequently being restricted to just eight appearances – totalling just 170 minutes to date.
As a result, a permanent exit has been mooted for the academy graduate, with Italian side Napoli just one of the clubs reportedly interested in a deal ahead of January.
Amorim spoke in the summer, stating that he didn’t want the player to depart Old Trafford, but given the lack of change in his first-team action, it could lead to a move this window.
The United player who has shades of Pogba & could end Mainoo’s stay
Paul Pogba is another youngster who managed to make the jump into the United first-team ranks, with the midfielder joining from Le Havre at the tender age of 17.
Paul Pogba at Manchester United.
However, his career at Old Trafford wasn’t straightforward, with the Frenchman even leaving on a free transfer before re-joining in a club-record deal back in the summer of 2016.
He managed to rack up a total of 233 appearances during his two separate spells at the Theatre of Dreams, often catching the eye with his ball-striking ability from distance.
However, his spell was marred with attitude and fitness issues, which ultimately led to yet another free transfer departure – subsequently moving back to Juventus in 2022.
Regardless of the issues behind the scenes, he gave the supporters countless moments to remember, with the Frenchman being one of the most technically gifted players to wear the shirt.
In the present day, Amorim may have landed his own version of Pogba, with a deal for teenager Cristian Orozco completed ahead of the January window.
It’s been reported in the last couple of days, that the Red Devils have paid a fee in the region of $1m (£750k) for the 17-year-old from boyhood side Fortaleza.
He may be seen as a player for the future, but there’s no reason why he can’t be catapulted into the first team in the near future, which could end Mainoo’s stay at Old Trafford.
Orozco’s stats in the early stages of his career reflect his talents, with the Colombian’s move handing the fanbase another reason to be excited about a new addition.
The youngster, who’s been dubbed “generational” by one Colombian analyst, starred at the U17 World Cup over the last couple of months, which has no doubt led to his transfer to join United.
He won the Man of the Match award against El Salvador, subsequently registering two shots on target despite operating as a holding midfielder in front of the back four.

Orozco also completed 67 passes at an accuracy rate of 75%, whilst also completing two dribbles within his total of 107 touches during the 0-0 stalemate.
His tally of nine duels won, nine recoveries and two tackles made further highlights his all-round quality, with the midfielder undoubtedly having a huge future at Old Trafford.
He will replicate Pogba in moving to the club as a 17-year-old, with many fans hoping he can match the levels produced by the Frenchman during his own spell at the club.
However, should Orozco continue on his current development path, there’s no reason why he can’t become a key member of Amorim’s squad – potentially ending Mainoo’s stay with his boyhood club.

Dermot Gallagher has now revealed why one Arsenal star wasn’t sent off in a controversial moment during the 2-1 victory against Newcastle United on Sunday.
Gunners come from behind to win at St. James' Park
Prior to Sunday’s encounter, Newcastle had won four of their previous five matches against the Gunners at St. James’ Park, but Mikel Arteta’s side sent out a statement by ending their hoodoo, picking up all three points in dramatic fashion.
Arteta has received widespread criticism for his decision to persist with Mikel Merino in recent weeks, but the Spaniard rewarded his manager for his faith by bagging a late equaliser, before Gabriel headed home in stoppage time to secure an important victory on the road.
Arsenal battling Tottenham to sign "exceptional" £87k-a-week Real Madrid star
The Gunners are in the race for an attacker, following a scouting mission.
ByDominic Lund Sep 29, 2025
Speaking after the match, Arteta insisted his side thoroughly deserved the victory, saying: “When you get what you deserve at the end there’s no better feeling. I’m so proud of the team and the way we controlled our emotions and navigated through the different stages of the game. We showed the conviction, the courage the desire and the quality we need to get where we want to be.”
However, things could’ve been very different. Gabriel may not have even been on the pitch to bag the late winner if Nick Woltemade had made more of a bust-up with the Brazilian earlier in the match, where the defender appeared to punch the Newcastle striker away from the ball.
Speaking Sky Sports’ Ref Watch, Gallagher said: “I think he’s lucky he didn’t actually strike him properly, because where he’s got lucky is is the referee hasn’t seen it, it’s gone to VAR and the VAR say red card or nothing, and it’s decided it’s not a red card. I don’t think it’s a red card, but I think if the referee sees it he’s certainly going to get a yellow card.”
Gabriel fortunate Woltemade didn't go down
Had the Newcastle striker made more of the incident and gone to ground, the Arsenal centre-back could have been in trouble, given that he clearly makes contact with the German’s face, albeit without a great deal of strength.
That said, the Magpies can also consider themselves fortunate that the decision to award Arsenal a penalty in the first half was overturned, with VAR getting involved after Jarred Gillett pointed to the spot for what he perceived to be a foul on Viktor Gyokeres.
Decisions went against both teams during the match, but Arteta’s side ultimately showed great character to come out on top, moving just two points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool in the process.
Rallying after a frustrating 2023/24 campaign, Newcastle United and Eddie Howe marched toward the Carabao Cup title last season, and they qualified for the Champions League too.
The new term is well underway, but the Magpies are still finding their footing after a stormy transfer window.
There is no need to panic. Newcastle have carved out a new future over the past several years, and the shift in ownership and impetus runs deeper than merely the first team. Indeed, the club’s academy is working at a faster and more efficient pace than during the Mike Ashley era, and indeed the years preceding that interminable stretch.
It would be handy to have a homegrown forward burst onto the scene, helping Anthony Gordon and co adapt to this new Alexander Isak-less world.
But that can hardly be a given, and Gordon needs to step back up to the fore.
Anthony Gordon needs to step up
Now that Isak has left for pastures new, it is time for Gordon to set things straight and rekindle the verve that led him to being named Newcastle’s Player of the Year for 2023/24, having hit double figures for both goals and assists in the Premier League.
Last season yielded less fruitful returns for the England international, who only scored six times in the Premier League and lacked his previous confidence and authority, but he remains an immensely talented Premier League star, coveted by Liverpool last year and priced at £100m.
While that early-season defeat against the Reds in August put a dampener on Gordon’s resurgence, he bounced back with a consolation strike against Barcelona last week, and the 24-year-old will now look to build himself back to his former level.

Gordon is a high-class winger, and he’s bolstered by a range of talented Newcastle stars. However, Howe is sure to hope that one of the club’s most promising youngsters quickly breaks the surface, having already been compared with one Lamine Yamal.
Newcastle's own Lamine Yamal
Newcastle can expect academy stars to emulate the likes of Elliot Anderson and Lewis Miley in wedging their way into the Toon first team, but they need the first-teamers to maintain a high level so as to ease them into the fray.
That’s why the understated addition of Vakhtang Salia could prove such an excellent piece of business for the Toon, with the Georgia U21 international having completed his move from Dinamo Tbilisi to Newcastle at the end of August, a year after a deal was agreed to sign the teenager.
Said to be “one of the best teenage prospects in the world” by journalist Graeme Bailey, Salia is powerful and agile and endowed with sharp pace when on the ball. His tactical dynamism lends itself to a range of different attacking berths.
Sadly, Howe and co will have to wait to see how the prospect settles into life in England since he has picked up a small hamstring injury before making his bow for the U21s.
It’s frustrating, but those in the know claim that it will be worth the wait, with Salia boasting a skillset that could see him rival the most talented youngsters in the Premier League.
Newcastle United manager EddieHowebefore the match
There’s even a sense that Salia might have a bit of Yamal about him; only a few weeks ahead of his 18th birthday, the tricky forward is settling into his new life on Tyneside and brings a potent attacking threat, having scored eight goals and supplied four assists for Dinamo’s senior side.
Yamal will be dejected and perhaps even a touch aggrieved that his name was not etched onto the plaque, but Ousmane Dembele was a worthy winner after leading Paris Saint-Germain to a historic quadruple, winning their maiden Champions League title.
It is probably worth stressing that we are not advocating Salia’s talent to lie at the same level as Yamal’s, but there are undeniable similarities in the versatile forwards’ respective styles of play.
Salia, silky and dangerous when advancing, has quite naturally been likened to his world-class countryman Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, but one Barcelona analyst actually believes it is indeed Yamal who is more aptly comparable, remarking that the Georgian is “of a similar profile” to the prodigious Spaniard.
Ballon d’Or runner-up Yamal is one of the most exciting up-and-coming talents since Lionel Messi broke onto the scene way back when. He is that good.
A relentless, oft-unstoppable dribbler with an eye for flair and a natural clinical edge, Yamal has been described as “the best player in the world” by Chelsea’s Cole Palmer earlier in 2025.
To expect Salia to emulate him at St. James’ Park would be foolish indeed, but if Howe can manufacture a player of comparable athleticism and energy and approach play, it would be quite something.
This may feel like overblown praise, but United battled tooth and nail against some of Europe’s biggest hitters to sign this rising star, with Real Madrid and Bayern Munich both registering interest of their own before Newcastle secured his signature.
Hailed as an “elite talent” by Hungarian journalist Bence Bocsak, Salia has so much potential, and he’s in the right place to realise those natural qualities. However, for now, we must wait.
Everything suggests it will be worth it for those of a Newcastle persuasion, though.

Chelsea are now stepping up their efforts to sign a “prolific” striker, who is also being targeted by Premier League rivals Arsenal, according to a report.
Blues still battling Arsenal for Sesko
Both Chelsea and Arsenal should be well-positioned to sign Benjamin Sesko this summer, given that the Slovenian has previously made it clear he would be keen on a move to London, and they continue to battle it out for his services.
Last week, it was revealed the Blues were leading the race for Sesko, despite Andrea Berta already holding direct talks over a deal for the RB Leipzig star, however, the Gunners still remain confident they will be able to get a deal over the line.
The race for the 22-year-old remains open, with the Gunners yet to make a formal bid, but he is not the only striker of interest to both Mikel Arteta and Enzo Maresca, with the London rivals also both vying to sign FC Porto’s Samu Aghehowa.
That is according to a report from Caught Offside, which has revealed that Premier League clubs, including Chelsea, are now stepping up their efforts to sign the Porto centre-forward, with the likes of Aston Villa and Arsenal also in the race.
Deal close: Chelsea now nearing agreement to sign "world-class" £25m star
The Blues could seal a move for a new signing “tomorrow”, following a recent positive development.
1 ByDominic Lund Jun 8, 2025
A deal could be on the expensive side, however, with the Portuguese club looking to receive around €70m – €75m (£59m – £63m), and they are by no means looking to force the Spaniard out the door this summer.
"Prolific" Aghehowa could be ideal Sesko alternative
With Arsenal now feeling positive about securing a deal for Sesko, the Blues may be forced to move on to alternative options, and the Porto star’s exploits in the Liga Portugal last season indicate he could be an exciting signing.
The Spain international reached the 25-goal mark in all competitions, with six of those coming in the Europa League, and at just 21-years-old, the forward is likely to have plenty of room for development.
In light of his stellar goal return last season, football talent scout Jacek Kulig also heaped praise upon the starlet, describing him as “one of Europe’s most prolific players” back in December.
That said, there may be concerns over the fact that Aghehowa is yet to prove himself in a major European league, and Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres, who netted a remarkable 39 goals in 33 Liga Portugal games last season, is available for a similar price.
