Exame aponta estiramento muscular e Everton desfalca o São Paulo

Vidarbha, Maharashtra take control

A round-up of the second day’s play from the Ranji Trophy Plate semi-finals

ESPNcricinfo staff22-Dec-2011Vidarbha’s lower order made use of the satisfactory platform built on the opening day, crafting a formidable first-innings total by keeping Hyderabad on the field for the entire second day in Nagpur. At the end of it, Vidarbha had reached 467 for 8 and were in control of the semi-final. It had not begun well, though. They resumed their innings on 225 for 5 and soon slipped to 267 for 7, losing Sairaj Bahutule and Shrikant Wagh. But Ranjit Paradkar, who has two centuries this season, provided stability and momentum in the first two sessions with a watchful 75.If Hyderabad sensed an opportunity to polish off the tail after Paradkar departed with the team total on 342, they were in for a surprise as the lower order pair Amol Jungade and Akshay Wakhare raised an unbroken 125-run stand for the ninth wicket. Jungade’s 92 was his best first-class score, and Wakhare’s 50 was his second half-century. Hyderabad were left ruing a missed chance – Wakhare was let off when only on four and the total on 364. Barring that one chance the Jungade-Wakhare combine continued to frustrate the visitors’ bowlers unhindered.Maharashtra claimed three vital wickets after posting a strong first-innings total, to take control of their semi-final against Himachal Pradesh in Pune. Resuming the innings on 232 for 4, Ankit Bawne converted his 56 into a century, finishing on 137 off 375 balls. Bawne found able support in his captain Rohit Motwani, who made 59 before his attempt to cut his HP counterpart, Vikramjit Malik, led to his downfall. The fifth-wicket combine of Bawne and Motwani had added crucial 110 runs.Bawne stayed firm, despite the absence of a stable partner at the other end. The left-handed Bawne had batted for more than seven hours as he hit his second century of the season. He was the ninth batsman out, and Maharashtra’s innings ended on 415. When it was Maharashtra’s turn to bowl, Samad Fallah gave them an ideal start by dismissing HP opener Paul Valthaty lbw off the fourth delivery of the first over. Paras Dogra dominated a half-century partnership for the second wicket but he lost his partner, Abhinav Bali, with the score on 62. Dogra was then involved in the run out of S Sriram, who had once represented Maharashtra, in the final over of the day. At 68 for 3, HP have a mountain to climb.

'We showed a lot of ticker today' – Taylor

A seven-run win ended 18 years of hidings and draws; a generation of young New Zealand players and fans now know what it’s like to beat Australia, it can be done

New Zealand sides defeat Australia at rugby. Or netball. They don’t beat Australia in Test cricket. And they definitely don’t do it on Australian soil. At least, that was the way New Zealand were viewed until a quiet Monday afternoon in Hobart, when Doug Bracewell curled the ball through Australia’s middle and lower order. A seven-run win ended 18 years of hidings and draws. Before this day, New Zealand had only won in Australia when Richard Hadlee was at his peak. They hadn’t even managed it in New Zealand since March 1993. To put that in perspective, Bracewell, Kane Williamson, Tim Southee and Trent Boult had not yet started school. The New Zealand captain who ended the drought, Ross Taylor, was eight years old.”When did we win?” Taylor said after the Hobart victory. “Oh, 1993. Can I remember it? Vaguely. Not well.”A generation of young New Zealand players and fans now know what it’s like to beat Australia. It can be done. And after Taylor’s team stayed with Australia for two days in the first Test in Brisbane, only to lose their way as the match wore on, he had one simple message for his men. Show some ticker and never give up. As a result, Taylor has the enviable record of two wins from three Tests in charge.”I’m not a very good speaker, as you can tell by now, but the only thing I try to instil in the players is fight and be proud in playing for your country,” Taylor said. “We didn’t show much fight in Brisbane but we showed a lot of guts and determination out there today. That was for the New Zealand public, an early Christmas present.”[I have] over 50 text messages on my phone – I think that’s pretty big. Rugby is our No.1 sport but any sport against Australia, winning in Australia, the New Zealand public enjoys. The New Zealand public knows that the New Zealand cricket team, when playing against Australia, is always the underdogs, but they don’t like it when we don’t show much fight. That’s what we didn’t do in Brisbane. We showed a lot of ticker today.”They needed it. On the second afternoon, when Taylor and Kane Williamson were batting with discipline, New Zealand deserved to be favourites. By the fourth morning, when David Warner was on his way to a century with a composed Usman Khawaja also in the middle, Australia were 119 runs from victory with nine wickets in hand.”We believed in ourselves, that we could win this match,” Taylor said. “We knew we had to fight. We knew we had to play a lot better than we did in Brisbane. We talked a lot about the way we bowled in Zimbabwe [during the Bulawayo Test] in the last session; about just fighting, taking our catches and bowling in the right areas, and we’ll get reward. That’s what happened.”Not that it was smooth sailing, even when Bracewell and Tim Southee started to torment the Australian batsmen with hooping swing. With 42 runs still required, Warner was joined by the No. 11, Nathan Lyon, and the pair nearly steered Australia home.New Zealand thought they had won when Lyon was given out lbw but Australia’s review indicated the ball had pitched outside the leg stump, even though the right-armer Southee was coming over the wicket. To the naked eye, it was hard to believe the Eagle-Eye verdict, as the ball appeared to strike Lyon in line. It nearly cost New Zealand the game.”It’s a G-rated programme isn’t it?” Taylor said when asked about how he felt at the time of the reviews. “There were a lot of things going through my mind. There must be something wrong with my eyes. For me personally, some of them which I thought were not out were out and vice-versa. But at the end of the day, we won the match. The emotions going through? My goal was to show a calmness, but inside I was churning.”They fought the whole way. We would have won by 40 runs out there against some teams. But the way Lyon and Warner played, I nearly had a heart attack. Warner was outstanding. To come in in only his second match and control the game the way he did … we’ll be on the wrong side of a few hidings so I can’t feel too sorry for him, but he deserves a lot of credit for the way he batted.”As it turned out, Warner was Man of the Match, ahead of the more deserving Bracewell. The award was voted for by the Australian public, watching the telecast. But it’s the New Zealand public who will have the last laugh. For the first time in a generation, they can celebrate a Test victory over Australia.

Pandey and Verma hurt Mumbai

Karnataka tightened their control over the game by adding a further 319 runs on day two and declaring on 635 for 9

Ramesh Powar took the usual few steps to deliver his, and the innings’, eighth no-ball. Embarrassed he walked back to the bowling mark. Rubbing the sweat from his forehead and temples, first with his left shoulder followed by the right, Powar prepared to bowl again. For a moment he gathered his breath, stared at the batsman before moving in with his quick-step bowling action to deliver. This time the ball slipped out of his sweaty palm and Powar fumbled to collect it from the ground. Finally he managed to deliver successfully what turned out be a flighted ball. Abhimanyu Mithun, Karnataka’s No. 9 batsman, skipped out of the crease immediately, confidently, to loft Powar over the straight boundary for a six. It was that kind of day for Mumbai: their bowlers were shown scant respect while the opposition batsmen ran the roughshod.Karnataka tightened their control over the game by adding a further 319 runs on day two. Manish Pandey, who had left the ground yesterday due to dehydration and cramps, returned to compile his maiden double-century in the Ranji Trophy while Amit Verma notched up his career-best score and his fourth century in this format. To compound Mumbai’s misery, the hosts lost their most experienced batsman when their captain Wasim Jaffer, erroneously, offered no shot to the fourth delivery of the innings from his Karnataka counterpart R Vinay Kumar. The ball nipped back into Jaffer’s right pad, just below the knee roll, prompting K Hariharan, the umpire, to raise his finger. The previous evening Pandey had made clear the visitors’ intentions: Karnataka would aim for at least 450 on a pitch where batsmen could comfortably play their strokes. And, so, 101 runs came in the first session. The visitors moved into top gear in the middle segment, cracking 189 runs in 30 overs, and, by then, Karnataka had breached the 600-run mark.Pandey walked in at the fall of Vinay, who enjoyed a harmless first hour to complete a fine half-century. Unlike Thursday where he was the pilot, Pandey allowed Verma to take the flight controls. It helped that Brabourne was a familiar environment for Verma, who had honed his basics under the tutelage of Vasu Paranjape, himself a former Mumbai stalwart, for three consecutive summers during his teens. No bowler presented any difficulty for the left-handed Verma, who picked runs on both sides of the wicket. Powar, bowling wide of the popping crease, tried luring Verma with flight and was soon dispatched past the cover boundary. Iqbal Abdulla focussed too much on bowling in to Verma’s legs only to be thwacked over his head a few times. The other left-arm spinner, Ankit Chavan, was not spared either. On 88, Verma reached three-figures with consecutive sixes against Powar – the first over the sight screen at the Churchgate End followed by another strong hit that sailed over long-on. Both batsmen easily charged bowlers, who tried everything – bowling from both ends, bowling negative lines, bowling to spread-out fields – yet failed to gain the upperhand.Disappointingly for Mumbai not one bowler could tie down the batsman. Ajit Agarkar, Powar and Abdulla, Mumbai’s leading bowlers in the past many seasons, were rendered useless. Interestingly, Powar and Abdulla had faced similar problems against a much weaker Rajasthan batting line-up last week on a similar track. There could be some sympathy for the bowler. The Brabourne pitch is not bowler-friendly as five wickets on the first day and four today indicated. However, domestic bowlers over the decades have toiled on flat pitches and gained respect by bowling tighter lines. On evidence, it would not be wrong to say that Mumbai’s bowlers have failed to maintain consistent lines of attack. Karnataka could have easily piled a 700-plus score but it seems they have more confidence in their bowling attack that contains three bowlers who have been in the Indian dressing room in the last two years. In Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma – the pair are part of the current Indian Test squad playing West Indies – and Abhishek Nayar, Mumbai have the wherewithal to challenge Karnataka. Each have their own individual ambitions to fulfil. And that could be a good enough spice to lift this contest which is in Karnataka’s favour at the moment.

West Indies take title with thumping win

West Indies Women completed a thumping 130-run win against Pakistan Women in the final of the Women’s World Cup Qualifiers in Mirpur. West Indies chose to bat and put on 250 for 5, driven by a hard-hitting career-best 95 from Deandra Dottin. The top order all contributed, with cameos, opener Juliana Nero also hitting a half-century. While Dottin’s knock included seven sixes and five fours, Nero steered the innings with a 98-ball 63. Pakistan’s opener Qanita Jalil put the side on course with a fluent 53, but once offspinner Anisa Mohammed came on, the innings collapsed. Anisa too put in a career-best performance, claiming 7 for 14 in 8.3 overs to bowl Pakistan out for 120.West Indies’ captain, Merissa Aguilleira said she was happy the side had moved up in the rankings. “It is truly fantastic to walk away with the tournament trophy and undefeated at that, and to also know we have improved on the global rankings,” she said. “It’s been a brilliant event, with some competitive cricket played – I’m extremely happy with the team effort, we have been consistent out there and it has paid off.”Player of the Match, Anisa said she had enjoyed playing in spin-friendly conditions. “It’s been great to play here in the subcontinent, where the wickets are good for spin. I had hoped to take five wickets in the final but to walk away with seven wickets, I’m thrilled.”Stafanie Taylor, who was the Player of the Series praised the team effort that went into the win. “I’m thrilled to have received the Player of the Tournament trophy, but it was very much a team effort throughout the event and I’m happy we’ve walked away with the trophy.”Sri Lanka Women chased down 193 in a close game against South Africa Women in Fatullah, to finish third in the tournament. After batting, South Africa were steered by a patient 68 from opener Shandre Fritz. The Sri Lanka bowlers shared the wickets around, but Sandamali Dolawatte was the pick, claiming three wickets with her legspin, as well as a run out. Sri Lanka’s chase was then set up by a century stand from their openers, Chamari Atapattu and Yasoda Mendis. The pair dismissed in quick succession, for 60 and 47 respectively, and South Africa picked up wickets at regular intervals thereafter, but it was not enough. Sri Lanka sneaked home with three wickets in hand and two balls to spare.Hosts Bangladesh Women eased to an 82-run win against Ireland Women in Savar, in the fifth-place play-off. Batting first, Bangladesh made 210 for 7, on the back of a 113-run stand from their openers, Suktara Rahaman and Sharmin Akhter Supta. While Rahaman and Supta got fifties, none of the other batsmen could build on the starts they got but the cameos they made was enough to push Bangladesh past 200. Medium-pacer Jill Whelan finished with the best figures for Ireland, 3 for 31, and also effected two run outs. The Ireland chase never really got going, and there was panic as four of their line-up were run out. None of the Ireland batsmen managed more than opener Cecelia Joyce’s 42.Netherlands Women secured seventh place by beating USA Women by 126 runs in Savar. Netherlands were put into bat and built their total around solid contributions from their top order. Captain Helmien Rambaldo and Kerry-Anne Tomlinson made half-centuries, with Tomlinson top scoring with 73, as Netherlands finished with 293 for 7. USA could manage only 167 for 8 in reply, Tomlinson again the star for Netherlands with four wickets. The result would have been much worse for USA if it hadn’t been for a 72-run stand for the eighth wicket between Triholder Marshall and Anahita Arora.
