Ray Bright, the former Test spinner, has expressed his interest in joining Australia’s selection panel. Bright wants to bring a specialist slow-bowling viewpoint to the group, while Dean Jones is still keen on a selection role if he does not win the job as Pakistan’s coach.Australia are searching for three new selectors, including a full-time chairman and two part-time independent selectors, after the Argus review prompted the restructuring of the panel. One of the Argus recommendations was that, if possible, the panel should feature men with a mixture of batting and bowling expertise. After the former fast man Merv Hughes was axed as a selector last year, the panel consisted of four ex-batsmen: Andrew Hilditch, Greg Chappell, David Boon and Jamie Cox. There had been no specialist spin input since the former legspinner Trevor Hohns departed in early 2006.The five years that followed was precisely the period in which Australia needed a slow-bowling expert, as 11 spinners were tried in the Test team following Shane Warne’s retirement. And while Nathan Lyon impressed during his Test debut in Sri Lanka, spin questions are likely remain in the coming months.Bright took 53 Test wickets for Australia bowling left-arm spin in a career spanning ten years, and he believes he could offer plenty of experience on the new panel. A Victorian state selector during a period of great success for the Bushrangers over the past decade, Bright has also seen plenty of the country’s best young players in his role as a national youth selector.”I’ve put my hand up for an independent part-time selector,” Bright told ESPNcricinfo. “I’ve been involved with Victoria for ten years now as a selector and also I’ve had about six years as a national youth selector, so I’ve seen a lot of the blokes running around now from an early age, Under-17s, and have seen a lot of the established players along the way.”I’m always keen to promote spin and put my point of view on who might be best suited in certain conditions. I can certainly help any panel I’m on to find that balance. It doesn’t do any harm to have a bit of a blend on any panel. It was probably a little bit heavily batting-based, one would have thought.”For the time being, Australia’s squads are still being chosen by a caretaker selection panel made up of the incumbents – Hilditch, Chappell and Cox – and the captain and coach, who will be part of the new group. Cricket Australia last month advertised for selectors but they won’t be appointed until the new position of general manager of team performance is filled.Hohns, the former chairman of selectors, and Rod Marsh have been linked to the full-time national selector role, while Jones is interested in one of the part-time positions. However, he is also among the final candidates to become Pakistan’s coach, and said in either position he would be hoping to contribute to the future of the game.”I’d look more towards the part-time job [than the full-time position],” Jones said. “I want to put something more back into cricket. I want to get back on the other side of the fence and be a bit more interactive with the game, instead of being in the media, which I’ve really enjoyed.”

Queensland to host Under-19 World Cup in 2012

Queensland will host the ICC’s 2012 Under-19 World Cup in August next year, with Brisbane, Townsville and the Sunshine Coast to be the primary venues for the event

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Aug-2011Queensland will host the ICC’s 2012 Under-19 World Cup in August next year, with Brisbane, Townsville and the Sunshine Coast to be the primary venues for the event.Australia hosted the inaugural edition of the Cup in 1988. The Australian team won the last tournament, in New Zealand in 2010, and can be expected to put up a stern defence on home soil.James Sutherland, the Cricket Australia chief executive, said the tournament had proven itself as a useful stage for upcoming generations of cricket talent. He also pointed out that the event would aid Australia in its preparations for the senior edition of the World Cup, to be held down under in 2015.The groups for the Under-19 World Cup

Group A
Australia, England, Nepal, Ireland
Group B
Pakistan, New Zealand, Scotland, Afghanistan
Group C
West Indies, India, Zimbabwe, Papua New Guinea
Group D
Sri Lanka, South Africa, Bangladesh, Namibia

“The ICC U19 Cricket World Cup is the showcase event for best young cricketers in the world and is where the next Cameron White or Yuvraj Singh gets their first real taste of top-level international cricket,” Sutherland said. “It was only a couple of years ago we saw Mitch Marsh captain the Australia Under-19 team to victory in New Zealand with talents such as Josh Hazlewood, Alister McDermott and Alex Keath alongside him.”We are very grateful to Queensland Cricket and Events Queensland for their support in hosting this tournament and I think all the teams and supporters will enjoy their time in Australia’s sunshine state. We are building towards hosting the senior ICC Cricket World Cup in 2015 and this tournament will play a big part in getting ready for that event,” he said.Graham Dixon, the Queensland Cricket chief executive, said the choice of the Sunshine Coast and Townsville as venues beyond Brisbane would be helpful for the development of cricket, and sporting infrastructure, in two major regional centres.”Queensland Cricket is thrilled at the decision to bring the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup to our state, and especially with the decision to play in two important regional centres, Townsville and the Sunshine Coast, with the resulting positive economic impact on those areas,” he said.”The support of the State Government and the Events Queensland will enable Queensland to provide an international showcase around this tournament, which has grown into a significant event on the world cricket stage.”Queensland Cricket is acutely aware that the ICC Cricket World Cup will be staged in Australia and New Zealand in 2015 and so tournaments like the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup are an important proving ground for us, and for Cricket Australia, as it gets closer to hosting that major event.”The ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat added: “This tournament has proved to be an important stepping stone for elite young cricketers aspiring to play international cricket. It’s an opportunity for them to develop and test their skills in a high-pressure situation against the world’s best at this level.”We also use it as an opportunity to educate them on several important issues like anti-corruption, anti-doping and social responsibility expected of international cricketers while also exposing them to the ICC Code of Conduct and media attention.”

Alastair Cook’s marathon 294, that helped England dethrone India from the No. 1 spot in Tests, has catapulted him to a career-best third spot in the ICC rankings for Test batsmen. Cook, who had endured poor form in the first two Tests, came into his own at Edgbaston to pick up 92 points and move to a rating of 836, just two shy of Kumar Sangakkara at No. 2. Jacques Kallis (883) stayed firmly on top of the table, while Sachin Tendulkar (808), still looking for his 100th international century, was pushed to fourth.Cook joined his colleagues Jonathan Trott (5th) and Ian Bell (7th) in the top ten, while Kevin Pietersen’s 63 at Edgbaston pushed him up two spots to 13th. Andrew Strauss (34th) and Eoin Morgan (52nd) also moved up thanks to their contributions to the win.It was a forgettable match for India’s batsmen, who were unable to reach 250 in either innings at Edgbaston, continuing their woeful returns as a team through the series. Virender Sehwag, who bagged a king pair after making a much-hyped return to the side, dropped seven places to 17th, while VVS Laxman slipped out of the top ten, to 12th. Rahul Dravid (14th), who hit centuries in the first two Tests of the series, also suffered a demotion by three spots, and Gautam Gambhir fell to 30th. MS Dhoni was the only Indian batsman to move up, with his twin 70s taking him to 36th.England’s bowlers also prospered, with James Anderson reaching a career-high rating of 803, cementing his No. 2 spot, separating the South African new-ball pair – Dale Steyn (899) and Morne Morkel (751). Tim Bresnan moved up nine places to the 16th spot, while Stuart Broad surged to joint fifth alongside Graeme Swann, who has had a quiet series. Broad’s impressive showing in the series also pitchforked him to second in the allrounders list, three points ahead of Daniel Vettori (364). Kallis remained on top of that list as well, with 451 points.Click here for the full table.

'Cannot have a player using a Test to warm-up'

Former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar has questioned India’s approach to handling the fitness of the players and has strongly suggested a review of the entire process

Nagraj Gollapudi26-Jul-2011Former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar has questioned India’s approach to handling the fitness of its players and has strongly suggested a review of the entire process. Highlighting the example of Zaheer Khan – who had to pull out of the Lord’s Test after playing barely one session on the first day due to a hamstring injury – Manjrekar said that the Indian think-tank should have known better than rushing Zaheer straight into the first Test of a major series with little practice in English conditions.Zaheer’s previous international match was the World Cup final on April 2, after which he played in the IPL and later skipped India’s tour of the West Indies with an ankle problem.”With Zaheer Khan not going to the West Indies the worry should have been that he was coming into a Test match cold,” Manjrekar told ESPNcricinfo. Though Zaheer bowled 20 overs in the first innings of the three-day match against Somerset, where he finished wicketless, Manjrekar said that it was definitely not enough to be match fit.”Just one tour game, a few overs here and there is not enough. For people to suggest that he would ease into the series and that it takes a while for Zaheer to warm up is not the right way to look at it at all. For the first match of a major series the player has to be ready; fighting fit and raring to go. The first Test is critical.”After Zaheer left the field with an injury, India’s bowlers toiled hard but that was not enough to stop England from piling up big totals in both innings. At the end of the Lord’s Test, MS Dhoni said that India were severely hampered by the absence of a third seamer, a complete contrast to the impact of England’s three-man pace attack on the progression of the game.Sanjay Manjrekar: “With Zaheer Khan not going to the West Indies the worry should have been that he was coming into a Test match cold.”•Associated Press

Dhoni remained sceptical about Zaheer’s availability for the second Test at Trent Bridge. “We have three days but I am not 100% sure if we will play him or not,” Dhoni said. “It is a long series and we don’t want to risk any individual if he is only 90% fit as that only increases the chances of him getting injured further. It is very important to get the guys fully fit.”It is believed that Zaheer does not want to risk aggravating the injury and has expressed reservations in private about playing the second Test which begins on July 29. This is not the first time that Zaheer has broken down during a game.Zaheer did not bowl in the second innings of India’s only warm-up match against Somerset, which had raised some doubts about his match fitness going into the first Test.”What has really come out from what happened to Zaheer is how we (the Indian team) are managing the fitness of the senior players so that they are ready and raring to go in that first Test match,” Manjrekar said. “We cannot have a player using a Test match to get warmed up completely.””What is happening currently with the fitness of major players is that it is left to the individual, the way he wants to tackle his own fitness. I don’t think the Indian physio has a plan for the overworked players. I don’t think there is a sophisticated, well-planned approach. I think it is left to the cricketer himself.”Zaheer perhaps made the mistake. India’s worst nightmare came true on the very first day of the Test series. It is time [Indian cricket] starts looking at it [player injury] a little more seriously and not leave it to the individual to look to assess his own fitness and approach matches the way it is being done at the moment.”

Rain ends Nottinghamshire's winning streak

Nottinghamshire’s perfect record in the Friends Life t20 came to a soggy end when their clash with Leicestershire was abandoned after a thunderstorm at Grace Road

Nottinghamshire’s perfect record in the Friends Life t20 came to a soggy end when their clash with Leicestershire was abandoned after a thunderstorm at Grace Road. The Outlaws posted 164 for 8 after being put into bat with David Hussey hitting 32 off 16 balls to go past fellow Australian Brad Hodge’s world record total of 3,690 runs in Twenty20 cricket. But with the Foxes at 21 without loss after 2.4 overs of their reply, heavy rain followed by thunder and lightning brought an end to proceedings leaving the teams with one point each.It meant an end to Nottinghamshire’s three-game winning run to start the competition while the Foxes were also robbed of the chance to end their 10-game winless run at Grace Road. The last time the Foxes won a Twenty20 match at home was against Yorkshire in June 2009.With the pitch tinged with green Foxes’ captain Matthew Hoggard put the Outlaws into bat and left-arm seamer Harry Gurney had them rocking with two wickets in his second over. Gurney snared openers Alex Hales and Riki Wessels who both provided catches with top-edged pull shots.Hussey was soon into his stride however and a glorious straight six off Abdul Razzaq took him past Hodge’s record. Hussey then smacked Gurney for three consecutive boundaries and with Hoggard conceding 16 runs in his first over the Outlaws reached 61 for 2 off their six overs of Powerplay.Hussey and fellow Perth-born batsman Adam Voges put on 55 in five overs with the stand ended when Hussey clipped a catch to midwicket off Hoggard. Voges was then run out when Andrew McDonald deflected a straight drive by Samit Patel into the stumps and the Outlaws’ innings gradually ran out of steam.Chris Read and Steven Mullaney provided some late momentum but a superb final two overs from Razzaq, which brought him two wickets for only six runs, pegged the Outlaws to 164 for eight with only 32 runs coming from the last five overs.

Windies in the sights of Big Bash teams

Australia’s newly manufactured Twenty20 teams will make extensive raids on West Indies cricket.

Australia’s newly manufactured Twenty20 teams will make extensive raids on West Indies cricket as the only readily available source of international talent for next summer’s expanded Big Bash League.Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Bravo, all unavailable from their national side’s current Test series against Pakistan due to the Indian Premier League, will be the most sought-after players, but others like the stylish young batsman Darren Bravo, speedster Kemar Roach and the captain Darren Sammy will all be wooed by the eight franchises.Such a vast raid on Caribbean playing stocks is sure to add to problems of disunity and disconnection between the players, their union and the West Indies board, who have fought out a long series of public arguments over a myriad of issues. While Gayle (Western Australia), Pollard (South Australia) and Dwayne Bravo (Victoria) all have previous relationships with certain states, they are likely to field plenty of additional offers for their services as administrators come to terms with the fact that marquee names will be in short supply at the time of the competition.During the tournament’s December/January timeslot, West Indies are the only international team not heavily committed to bilateral tours. India has quickly ruled out allowing its touring players to take part in between matches against Australia, while South Africa, Sri Lanka, England, Pakistan, New Zealand, Bangladesh and even Zimbabwe have international commitments.England limited-overs players may be available pending the release of the schedule for matches against Pakistan, while the likes of Shahid Afridi and Lasith Malinga should also be accessible. Muttiah Muralitharan has elected to play in New Zealand’s T20 competition rather than returning to Australia.A desire for marketable players has been made all the more intense by the creeping realisation that Australian cricket audiences seem unlikely to warm instantly to the concept of fabricated teams, having been initially drawn to domestic T20 cricket by the combination of a bright new format, cheap ticket prices and the pre-existing traditions of state versus state.Negotiations between Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketers Association over the MOU governing player payments are close to compromise if not complete resolution, and the broad terms of player recruitment have become clear. Free agency will allow players to pick the team of their choice, while a $1 million salary cap will be put in place without a maximum contract stipulation, allowing sides to offer a particularly lucrative deal to players of Gayle’s ilk. Two overseas players will be allowed per team, although it will be possible, as in the IPL, to recruit more imports and rotate them through the XI.The relationship between BBL and state contracts is complex, with one-team states seemingly in a better position to offer two contracts to their most valued players while New South Wales and Victoria will have less to offer their best players due to the presence of two sides. State administrators believe it would be most equitable to open up the BBL recruitment window only after state contracts have been finalised, though the practicalities of such a move are becoming increasingly cramped by a lack of time.
