Everton are closing in on Townsend

Everton are close to completing the signing of former Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend on a free transfer.

What’s the story?

According to Sky Sports, the 30-year-old is closing in on a move to Goodison Park as Rafael Benitez attempts to bolster his first-team squad ahead of the upcoming campaign.

Townsend has been without a team since his contract at Selhurst Park expired at the end of June, bringing an end to his five-year stay in south London.

Fans may be concerned

The former England international and Benitez worked together at Newcastle United in the final few months of the 2015/16 campaign but were unable to prevent the Magpies’ relegation to the Championship.

In June, Townsend told Sky Sports News that Everton were making a good decision by appointing the Spanish tactician as their new boss.

“I played under Rafa at Newcastle, so I know how good of a manager he is,” he said.

“He’s good on the training pitch. He is always trying to work hard, and he’s a good man as well. Good man-manager. So, taking out the rivalry, taking out the Liverpool-Everton. For on-pitch reasons, I think it’s a really good appointment.”

It was recently revealed that Palace had no plans to offer Towsend a new deal, meaning he was free to negotiate a contract elsewhere.

And while he has been a solid performer during his time at Palace, Everton supporters may be concerned at their reported interest in the flying winger.

Townsend scored just 16 goals for the capital club in 185 appearances, providing a further 28 assists for his teammates. Respectable numbers, but not ones that will excite the Toffees’ faithful.

While the Merseyside outfit brought in the likes of James Rodriguez, Allan and Ben Godfrey under former manager Carlo Ancelotti just 12 months ago, the drop-off in talent to Townsend is sizeable.

It’s a transfer that appears to make little sense for Everton. They’ve just got rid of one ageing, rapid, English winger in Theo Walcott, and now they’re replacing him with one who has achieved less throughout his career.

Although the financial impact of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic is forcing clubs to work with a restricted budget, picking up Palace rejects is not the sort of transfer business Everton fans would have been hoping for.

Gollini can be Spurs’ Lloris heir

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move for Atalanta goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini recently and the Italian could be the man to finally replace Hugo Lloris in this Spurs side.

What’s the word?

According to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Spurs are already in negotiations with Atalanta over a potential deal for the 26-year-old shot-stopper, who has played for Manchester United and Aston Villa in the past.

It is suggested that Spurs could take the ‘keeper on a two-year loan deal with an obligation to buy, as they look to find a replacement for Lloris, who looks likely to depart the North London club at the end of next season when his contract is set to expire.

Can Gollini replace Lloris?

Although Lloris is club captain at Spurs and is a World Cup-winning goalkeeper, he is 34-years-old now and has proven himself to be error-prone in recent seasons, with mistakes leading to goals a far too regular occurrence for the Frenchman, despite the occasional world-class saves he makes.

Since signing for Spurs from Lyon in 2012, the experienced ‘keeper has gone on to make 373 appearances for the Lilywhites, conceding 416 goals and keeping 126 clean sheets in that time.

Questions have rightly been asked of Lloris during his time at the club but he is perhaps too comfortable in his position as the first-choice goalkeeper, with Joe Hart and Alfie Whiteman offering little competition, which suggests that the signing of a quality ‘keeper such as Gollini could definitely benefit Spurs.

Last season, following a 5-4 defeat against Everton in the FA Cup, talkSPORT pundit Jason Cundy blasted Lloris for a disappointing performance, saying:

“Lloris has got to move on.

“I don’t want to point the finger in just one direction, because if you concede five there is a lot of blame there and you defend as a unit. But I have to say, some of the goals Lloris let in tonight… he is a weak link.

“The Calvert-Lewin goal was embarrassing and I don’t think he fills that Tottenham defence with any confidence.

“He let Everton back into the game. Look at some of the top goalkeepers in this country, Alisson at Liverpool and Ederson at Man City, that doesn’t happen, or it rarely happens, but with Lloris, I’ve seen it too many times.

The £15.3m-rated Gollini could be the ideal man to replace him at Spurs, having established himself as a regular with Atalanta in recent seasons, making 112 appearances, in which he has conceded just 120 goals and kept 38 clean sheets.

Last season saw the Italian make 26 appearances in Serie A, keeping an impressive 10 clean sheets and conceding just 26 goals, which suggests that he could be an excellent addition to Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.

Therefore, Fabio Paratici should definitely be looking to bring Gollini to Spurs this summer, in the hope that he can be the man to step up when Lloris finally leaves the North London club.

Pundit questions Rangers’ Lundstram signing

Frank McAvennie has admitted his shock after Glasgow Rangers confirmed the signing of John Lundstram on a free transfer.

The Lowdown: Gers sign Lundstram

The midfielder left Sheffield United following the end of the previous campaign.

The Gers have been linked with a move for the 27-year-old since last year (Glasgow Live), but they finally got their man on a free transfer on Monday (rangers.co.uk).

The Latest: McAvennie shocked

Speaking to Football Insider, McAvennie believes that Rangers have made a mistake in signing Lundstram. The 61-year-old said:

“I don’t get that, I really don’t.

“I know it’s another free transfer and I won’t criticise that. How many midfield players does he [Gerrard] want?

“They have too many as it is, I don’t get it. It’s the last position Rangers need to strengthen, the last thing they need.

“They are going to be fighting on all fronts next season. They are still disappointed with how they did in the cups last season.

“I don’t know if he’ll start, after the season he’s had. It’s a strange one for me.”

The Verdict: Quality

Gerrard does have a variety of midfielders at his disposal, as McAvennie highlighted. Glen Kamara, Steven Davis and Scott Arfield were regular members of the team last season, while Joe Aribo and Ryan Jack would have been involved even more had it not been for injury, and Scott Wright joined from Aberdeen in January to provide further depth at Ibrox.

However, in Lundstram, the Gers have managed to get themselves a midfielder with Premier League experience and plenty of quality. He has made 62 appearances in the English top flight (Transfermarkt), and at 27 he should have plenty of football left ahead of him. Quite frankly, this was a bargain the Gers could not ignore, even if it is in a position where they are already well-stocked.

In other news, Alex McLeish has shared his worries about the future of this Rangers man.

That's the history-making out of the way, now for the consistency

New Zealand manager Jeff Crowe predicted, right at the start of the tour of the West Indies, that rain would have a significant role to play in the series

Lynn McConnell03-Jul-2002New Zealand manager Jeff Crowe predicted, right at the start of the tour of the West Indies, that rain would have a significant role to play in the series. And it did, although it was confined to the last day, and session, of the series by which time New Zealand had held out the West Indies’ spinners long enough to ensure the TelstraClear Black Caps would return home with another piece of history to their credit – a first Test win in the Caribbean, and a series win as well.It completes what has been a remarkable season for New Zealand, one that reflects the highs and lows of the modern Test scene.A tour of Pakistan postponed with the players en route in September, a gutsy and respect-winning tour of Australia with positive cricket and match-planning evidence of the professionalism of the side’s backroom boffins, a matter-of-fact home series win against Bangladesh, followed by an inside-out drawn series with England, another below par effort in Sharjah, a record thrashing by Pakistan before the tour was blown apart by a terrorist bomb, and then the West Indies triumph.Captain Stephen Fleming’s stature has grown, as his team has developed more experience, and it is deserving of its third-place ranking on the ICC Test Championship.Of more concern is the failure to string together consistency in the one-day game, something that will need to be addressed in the remaining countdown to the World Cup.However, in the absence of Chris Cairns from all but the first day of the first Test against England, and his last hour batting, New Zealand has achieved a measure of success that bodes well for its immediate Test future.Central to this has been the emergence of Shane Bond. Having a fast bowler in the armoury is always a highly-effective weapon and there is no doubt that he caused the West Indies some distinct discomfort.Yet, victory over England was achieved without him, when Daryl Tuffey stepped up in such outstanding fashion. With Bond, Tuffey, and the continuing investment in Ian Butler, there is a much wider spread of wicket-taking pace men. Add to them Chris Martin, Cairns, Shayne O’Connor and Andre Adams when they have recovered and Kyle Mills also looking to get back into the fray and there is some genuine cause for optimism in New Zealand’s Test future.Handling the options then becomes an exercise for the selectors and some careful management of resources will be the key.The development of Scott Styris was probably the most important thing to come out of the West Indian tour and his success, especially with the bat, has probably had the most severe consequences on the future of Chris Harris’ Test-playing career. While there were concerns with the batting in Pakistan and the West Indies, New Zealand got through. Craig McMillan appeared to hit a low patch. Nathan Astle’s contribution was largely confined to his second innings 77 at Bridgetown, a significant contribution for all that, and his 69 in the first innings in Grenada. But for New Zealand to be at maximum impact with its batting, Astle and McMillan both need to be firing consistently while Mark Richardson, Lou Vincent and Fleming have all made significant progress throughout the summer.Getting the mix in preparation right will be the key for next summer. It is for all intents and purposes, a limited overs summer. There are two Tests against India, but that is the lot until after the World Cup. There is the ICC Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka, the home series seven One-Day Internationals against India, and the Cup.But to maintain its status as the third-ranked Test playing nation, then New Zealand must win the Test series against India. It won 1-0 last time in New Zealand.Challenges aplenty face the side after they take some weeks off before beginning their preparation for Sri Lanka, but they can return home well satisfied with their season and there must be every chance of better days ahead on the immediate cricket horizon.

Treino físico e escondendo o jogo: a segunda-feira do elenco do Botafogo

Crystal Palace: Eagles receive boost in Osaze Urhoghide chase

Crystal Palace transfer target Osaze Urhoghide would prefer to stay in England for his next adventure rather than moving to Europe as he nears the end of his Sheffield Wednesday contract, according to The Star.

The Lowdown: Crystal Palace look towards 2021/22

Moving into the 2021/22 season, the Eagles face a massive rebuild following the exit of 22 first-team players at the beginning of June [The Sun].

Despite being managerless following Roy Hodgson’s departure last month, they have made progress in the transfer market following the acquisition of 22-year-old American midfielder Jacob Montes [cpfc.co.uk].

As pre-season fast approaches, could the south Londoners be set to make a second signing of the summer transfer window after recent developments?

The Latest: Eagles given boost in Urhoghide pursuit

Urhoghide has chosen to turn down interest from the continent following murmurings that clubs such as Sporting Lisbon, Benfica and Club Brugge were in the running for his services. That could open the door for Palace to swoop for his signature, although Leeds United and Preston North End have also been known admirers of the 20-year-old [The Star].

The Owls would be due a compensatory package once the youngster leaves Hillsborough, with his deal set to expire on Wednesday [Transfermarkt].

The Verdict: Palace should look to sign Urhoghide as soon as possible

All things considered, this news should come as a timely boost to Crystal Palace supporters approaching the forthcoming campaign.

The 1.88m (6 foot 2) colossus made 17 appearances for Darren Moore’s men in 2020/21 [Transfermarkt]. Showing his domineering presence at an early stage of his career, Urhoghide successfully completed an average of 2.7 clearances per game last season for Sheffield Wednesday [WhoScored].

Once labelled as ‘immense’ by his manager Moore [The Star], he certainly seems to have a bright future in the game, and regardless of the direction of the club, securing premium prospects should always hold an important place on the Crystal Palace itinerary.

The Eagles should look to seal a deal as soon as possible for Urhoghide before Leeds or Preston make their move.

In other news, many Crystal Palace fans react negatively to an official club update.
