Leicester City must sell Hamza Choudhury this summer as Brendan Rodgers look to build a squad capable of securing a top-four finish.

What’s the story?

According to LeicestershireLive, Newcastle United are expected to renew their interest in the 23-year-old over the upcoming transfer window after failing to secure his signature in January.

Choudhury was close to joining Steve Bruce’s side last winter, but the Foxes couldn’t secure a replacement in time and as such, they wouldn’t let the former England Under-21 international depart.

Rodgers must axe him

Leicester are expected to bolster their first-team options in the coming months after experiencing a disappointing end to a promising 2020/21 campaign.

The likes of Odsonne Edouard, Boubakary Soumare and Nuno Mendes have all been strongly linked with a move to the King Power Stadium, but Rodgers may have to sell some of his fringe players to be able to afford his top targets.

With the pandemic continuing to put a strain on many clubs’ finances, sides like Leicester will have to be clever in the market in order to compete with their more affluent competitors.

Luckily for the Midlands outfit, that is something they have excelled at over recent seasons. Stars such as Harry Maguire and Riyad Mahrez have left the current FA Cup holders for huge fees before the money generated from their sales was reinvested into the side.

While Leicester will be keen to keep hold of their most influential assets this time around, there are still several names that could generate substantial fees this summer.

Choudhury made 22 appearances last term for his boyhood club, but only four of them came as starts in the Premier League, highlighting his role within the squad.

The expected imminent arrival of Soumare from Ligue 1 champions Lille will only serve to push the youngster further down the Leicester pecking order, and the £7.2 million rated midfielder’s exit could fund a move for another ambitious target.

Rodgers will be hoping to secure a Champions League qualification spot at the third time of asking next season, and how the Northern Irish manager performs in the transfer market may just be the deciding factor.

Choudhury has not been a bad player for Leicester and some might say it would be harsh to bomb him out, but ruthless calls need to be made at times and Rodgers must make one here and cash in on the midfielder for the greater good of his squad.

That’s according to a report by We Are Birmingham, who claimed that the 31-year-old defensive midfielder looks set to leave the club in the coming days, having spent just one season with the Championship side.

Karanka flop

While the signing of San Jose was seen as something of a coup for Aitor Karanka’s Birmingham City side last summer, it would be a fair statement to make that the former Athletic Bilbao man did not quite live up to expectations in the second tier of English football this season.

Over his 27 Championship appearances for the Blues, only 19 of which came as starts, the £26.5k-per-week midfielder scored no goals, registered one assist and created two big chances, as well as making an average of one interception, 1.3 tackles and 0.5 key passes per game.

These metrics saw San Jose earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.70, ranking him as Lee Bowyer’s joint 13th-best performer in the second tier.

So, while his displays were by no means disastrous, when considering the fact that the £1.62m-rated Spain international is the club’s highest earner by quite a distance, the argument could easily be made that the Blues would be much better off investing the midfielder’s wages elsewhere.

As such, it would indeed appear highly advisable for Bowyer to attempt to move the 31-year-old on in the upcoming transfer market, as parting with the Spaniard would free up a considerable amount of wage budget, while also potentially bringing in a small transfer fee, that the 44-year-old could use on other targets in his bid to mount a push towards the Championship play-off places next season.

-As coisas tem andado dentro da confiança que eu a direção temos no Flamengo. Não quis nunca participar diretamente, tem as pessoas que falam primeiro por mim, mas depois eu tomo a decisão. Sempre.
