Stoke City: Sam Clucas pens new deal

Stoke City have recently announced that Sam Clucas has signed a new contract with the Potters until the summer of 2023 despite transfer interest from West Brom.

What’s the story?

His contract with Stoke was due to expire this summer, which saw the 30-year-old linked with a move away from the bet365 Stadium.

Football Insider had previously claimed that Clucas had emerged as a transfer target for fellow Championship club West Brom during this summer, but his recent decision to sign a new deal with Michael O’Neill’s side has poured cold water on any potential move to The Hawthorns.

The midfielder first signed for Stoke back in 2018 and has made 100 appearances for the Potters in that time.

It’s a real boost for the Potters

Stoke supporters will likely be delighted to see that Clucas has signed a contract extension, as he has been a key member of their side over the last three years.

O’Neill is also bound to be a happy man after the news was confirmed, with the manager previously singing the midfielder’s praises by chiming: “Clucas has been brilliant, no doubt about that.

“Not only the types of goals that he does score but his all-round play, his quality on the ball, his ability to win the second ball, competition to win the ball in the air. Everything.” [via Stoke Sentinel]

He has a considerable amount of experience of playing in the Championship, having lined out for the Potters and Hull City at this level, whilst also appearing in the Premier League with Swansea and Hull (Transfermarkt).

He will be targeting a return to the top flight with the Potters over the coming months, and Potters fans will surely be eager to see him play his part this season.

Clucas had an average WhoScored rating of 6.81 in 2020/21, the ninth-highest rating among O’Neill’s squad.

He has been an important member of the team in recent seasons, not least for his passing ability. No other player in the top ten of WhoScored’s rating list for the Stoke squad had a higher pass success rate than Clucas’ 80.3%, which makes for good reading for the 30-year-old.

Stoke finished 14th in the Championship last season, which would have been frustrating for their fans after they had previously been in with a strong chance of finishing in the play-offs until a springtime slump.

With Clucas’ future being resolved, it could be a huge relief for O’Neill and Stoke supporters heading into the new campaign, where a top-six finish must be the Potters’ aim.

World Cup ticket sales in turn about

For some disgruntled cricket lovers it may have come a day too late, but overnight, the World Cup organising committee turned things around to have almost a problem free day of ticket sales

Keith Lane16-Jul-2002For some disgruntled cricket lovers it may have come a day too late, but overnight, the World Cup organising committee turned things around to have almost a problem free day of ticket sales. Working late into the night technologies were improved and all venues reported excellent sales. The Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, Newlands in Cape Town and Kingsmead in Durban were today completely sold out while stadium grandstand seats are only available at Centurion, Port Elizabeth and Bloemfontein. For the rest some open stands and grass embankment packages are still available.’Follow the Team’ packages for the first round for South Africa, Zimbabwe, Australia, West Indies, India, Pakistan, New Zealand and England have all been snapped up. Super Six packages will go on sale after completion of the first round.Compared to the 98 000 tickets sold on Monday, 30 500 were sold today leaving a balance of 93,500. Total ticket takings for the two days now stands at R17 million. If these sales are anything to go by then stadiums are going to be packed to capacity during February and March next year and financially the cash strapped unions are going to be breathing a lot easier and cricket in South Africa can look to an bright future. In a statement released by the organising committee quoted Dr Ali Bacher, executive director, as saying: "We are pleased with the way the sale of ticket packages went today but we acknowledge that the system is slow because of the heavy traffic on both the call centre and website. The system stood up well today but we are sympathetic with the many cricket fans who have struggled to access the sales channels. Sales on both the call center and website proceeded smoothly."All sale outlets will be open to the public from 07:00 till 19:00 on Wednesday 17 July.

Everton are closing in on Townsend

Everton are close to completing the signing of former Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend on a free transfer.

What’s the story?

According to Sky Sports, the 30-year-old is closing in on a move to Goodison Park as Rafael Benitez attempts to bolster his first-team squad ahead of the upcoming campaign.

Townsend has been without a team since his contract at Selhurst Park expired at the end of June, bringing an end to his five-year stay in south London.

Fans may be concerned

The former England international and Benitez worked together at Newcastle United in the final few months of the 2015/16 campaign but were unable to prevent the Magpies’ relegation to the Championship.

In June, Townsend told Sky Sports News that Everton were making a good decision by appointing the Spanish tactician as their new boss.

“I played under Rafa at Newcastle, so I know how good of a manager he is,” he said.

“He’s good on the training pitch. He is always trying to work hard, and he’s a good man as well. Good man-manager. So, taking out the rivalry, taking out the Liverpool-Everton. For on-pitch reasons, I think it’s a really good appointment.”

It was recently revealed that Palace had no plans to offer Towsend a new deal, meaning he was free to negotiate a contract elsewhere.

And while he has been a solid performer during his time at Palace, Everton supporters may be concerned at their reported interest in the flying winger.

Townsend scored just 16 goals for the capital club in 185 appearances, providing a further 28 assists for his teammates. Respectable numbers, but not ones that will excite the Toffees’ faithful.

While the Merseyside outfit brought in the likes of James Rodriguez, Allan and Ben Godfrey under former manager Carlo Ancelotti just 12 months ago, the drop-off in talent to Townsend is sizeable.

It’s a transfer that appears to make little sense for Everton. They’ve just got rid of one ageing, rapid, English winger in Theo Walcott, and now they’re replacing him with one who has achieved less throughout his career.

Although the financial impact of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic is forcing clubs to work with a restricted budget, picking up Palace rejects is not the sort of transfer business Everton fans would have been hoping for.

And, in other news…Fabrizio Romano delivers exciting transfer update that’ll leave Everton fans buzzing

C & G semi-final postponed until Sunday

The Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy semi-final at Headingley between Yorkshire and Surrey will now be played on Sunday, after play was washed out for the third consecutive day.

Stephen Lamb02-Aug-2002The Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy semi-final at Headingley between Yorkshire and Surrey will now be played on Sunday, after play was washed out for the third consecutive day.The decision follows talks between the two clubs and the cricket authorities, and was reached to prevent the game being decided by a bowl-out.The two umpires, Barry Dudleston and John Hampshire, consulted with officials from the England and Wales Cricket Board today.”We had some misgivings about setting a precedent and playing the game onanother day, but bearing in mind the final is not due to be played for fourweeks we could afford some flexibility,” explained Tim Lamb, the ECB’s chiefexecutive.Surrey play Northamptonshire in a Norwich Union League match at Whitgift School tomorrow, so will have to travel south before returning to Leeds for Sunday’s match.”We’ve been guaranteed our England players – you want your best playersavailable for a semi-final,” explained Surrey coach Keith Medlycott.”We’d have been happy to move the venue and we didn’t really want to be driving up and down motorways but it is better to settle this by playing a game of cricket.”I think both teams are pleased they have the chance to slug it out. We’ll bemore tired than they will because of the driving we have to do but we still havea chance to play a game of cricket to decide who plays in a Lord’s final.”Yorkshire’s captain Darren Lehmann agreed. “It’s the best solution because nobody wants a bowl-out. We would have loved for the game to be over today and it means we will now be playing three one-day matches in three days.”It makes it a tough schedule for both sides and there is a lot of cricket tobe playing in the next week, but I still think it’s the best solution. We did hear they were discussing the possibility of moving it to another ground, but why would you leave your home ground – that seems madness to me.”

Aston Villa could land bargain in PSG’s Rafinha

Aston Villa could get their new Gareth Barry in the form of PSG midfielder Rafinha.

What’s the story?

Having already clinched the signings of Emi Buendia and Ashley Young, Dean Smith’s side have enjoyed a decent start to the transfer window, and appear to have their eye on their next midfield signing.

According to reports in Spain,, PSG are ready to let Rafinha leave this summer in order to raise some funds for their own signings, and Villa could come in for the Brazilian.

Villa’s new Barry

Left-footed, composed on the ball, and aggressive in trying to winning it back, while Rafinha may be thought of as a typical Barcelona academy product who’s invested in a tiki-taka style of play, the Brazilian has a much-more all-round, combative presence that has a lot of similarities to how Barry liked to play.

The former England international spent 11 years in the Aston Villa senior side, playing 433 games for them, before making the switch to Manchester City, where he won the Premier League title.

The City website described him as: “A reliable, composed and tactically astute midfielder with a knack for sniffing out danger, his understated style of play made him one of the unsung heroes of that title-winning side.”

That reliability and composure is exactly what Rafinha would bring to the table at Villa.

Talking about the 27-year-old, former Barca defender Andreu Fontas once said: “Rafinha is a great player. Physically, he is a beast and, technically, he is superb.”

As per Whoscored, the midfielder boasted an impressive 90.9% pass accuracy in Ligue 1 last season (considerably better than any Villa player with more than one start), while he also averaged 2.3 tackles per match as well (only Matty Cash fared better with 2.5).

And, speaking after his performance for PSG last year, now Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel, said: “Rafinha showed in this match that he was courageous. He showed that he knows how to take responsibility and he looked for attacking solutions. He had a good match.”

The £13.5m-rated play-maker could bring that same fearlessness and intensity both on and off the ball to Villa Park should Smith land his man this summer.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa are preparing a transfer bid for this player…

Pela obra completa, o Nations Bank desembolsaria US$ 70 milhões.

………………….

Sonho no papel

………………….

“Casamento” desfeito

………………….

Redback recruits set up outright chance against Vics

ADELAIDE, Oct 17 AAP – Two interstate recruits making their debuts for South Australia put the Redbacks within eight wickets an outright victory over Victoria on the third day of their Pura Cup match at Adelaide Oval.

Sam Lienert17-Oct-2002ADELAIDE, Oct 17 AAP – Two interstate recruits making their debuts for South Australia put the Redbacks within eight wickets an outright victory over Victoria on the third day of their Pura Cup match at Adelaide Oval.Former NSW all-rounder Mark Higgs scored a blistering unbeaten 134 from just 133 balls to help SA declare its second innings at 6-515 at tea today, setting Victoria a final innings target of 512, which would be an all-time Pura Cup/Sheffield Shield record if achieved.Ex-Victorian off-spinner John Davison then reduced his former side’s winning chances to virtually zero when he dismissed openers Matthew Elliott (21) and Jason Arnberger (42) in a 43-over final session to leave the Bushrangers at 2-94 at stumps.Victoria, which will take two points from the match after leading by four runs on the first innings, needed a further 418 runs on tomorrow’s final day to win.Graeme Rummans was not out 18 with Brad Hodge on 11.Elliott admitted his men had been played out of the game but would fight desperately tomorrow to stave off outright defeat.”They’re trying to crush us, aren’t they, they’re trying to play us out of the game and just thinking that we’re going to capitulate,” Elliott said.”They probably have reason to do that by the way we played in that first innings.”We’re pretty disappointed with our first-up effort with the bat, and I think the boys are prepared to knuckle down tomorrow and really play well.”At the end of the day if we come away with two points and they come away with nil and we win the one-dayer (on Saturday) then we’ve had a pretty good trip, and that’s what we’re aiming for.”The frustration of SA’s long innings clearly told on the Victorians as Higgs and Mike Smith (32 not out) put on an unbroken stand of 67 from 50 balls before the declaration, including 18 runs from the final over of the innings, bowled by Ian Harvey. An angry Harvey, who was being heckled by the crowd throughout the over in which he bowled four no-balls, walked in the opposite direction of the dressing rooms to remonstrate with a spectator after the declaration.Wicket-keeper Darren Berry ran over to pull him back when he was about halfway to the fence.Elliott defended Harvey’s actions, but admitted he was glad Berry stopped him.”I don’t blame Harvs for walking over, but at the end of the day Harvs has got to have that self-control, I think he was a bit disappointed that he walked as far as he did,” he said.”He’s got to have the self-control to be professional but at the end of the day when you’ve had it for a few hours and you’ve had enough of it I can’t blame the guy.Elliott said former team-mate Davison loomed as the key tomorrow.”It always seems to happen, everyone we play against who changes states seems to be the key for that state in some particular form in the first-up game of the season and we’ve got to play well tomorrow and play Davo out of the game,” he said.
