Grassroots disgrace needs to be addressed

The sad news announced this week that Senrab, the youth club which started the young careers of John Terry, Sol Campbell, Ledley King, Jermain Defoe and Paul Konchesky, amongst others, are now imploring their former graduates to help find the £12,000 annual running costs to prevent the club from going out of business comes as no surprise. The increasing cost of training equipment and facility hire, and the reduction in financial support from the council, is threatening one of English football’s most respected institutions’ very existence.

Senrab has been training young, enthusiastic footballers for fifty years, but it’s conductor, Tony Carroll, has admitted, “We can’t afford to hire training facilities. Tower Hamlets sport and leisure is run by private companies, it is not run by the council, and we get no concessions at all. What we’re doing now is every team trains once a week, on a Saturday in local parks because we don’t have to pay for that.” Senrab are perhaps one of the highest profile youth clubs in England, but they are suffering the same adversity that most grassroots football clubs are facing in every corner of the country.

Whilst processed, canned and fast food becomes cheaper and more accessible, at the same time councils are throwing money at speed cameras, width restrictions and Christmas lights that are designed not to offend anyone, we are still instructed to eat healthily and participate in sport. Well this situation has gotten out of hand, and did so long before Carroll announced his club’s dire situation. It is criminal that the two most prominent outlets for playing football, Goals and Power League, are able to not only charge mindboggling prices to use a small area of land for up to 60 minutes at a time but are also not restricted from increasing what they charge customers at any time they please.

[ad_pod id=’unruly-2′ align=’right’]

There are 44 Power League centres across the UK with the average price of using a 5-a-sie pitch being £45, and a 7-a-side pitch £63 for an hour. What’s more disgusting is that each of Goals’ 40 centres charge their customers a confusingly high and obscure £61.50 for an hour of 5-a-side, and a staggering £80 for a 7-a-side pitch. If you’re visiting one of their centres, don’t forget to bring a ball otherwise you will be asked bluntly to leave a deposit because clearly, £80 is a completely reasonable fee to pay to use a rectangle of fake grass, what you do with it is up to you.

Having grown up during a more reasonable time, when I was encouraged to play and enjoy football anywhere at anytime with anyone, I find it extremely difficult to trust any of the vague reassurances councils, the FA and the Premier League constantly express, because in reality this country’s grassroots football is a shambles, children are finding fewer reasons to want to get involved and nothing is being done to actively alter this situation because, as with Senrab, their fate is controlled by private companies.

Senrab’s local council, Tower Hamlets, responded to Carroll’s concerns by saying: “We value the commitment of local sports clubs and organisations.” In practice, the council has cut the club’s biennial funding from £2,500 to £800 and the price of renting training pitches has increased by up to 300%. We are breeding a generation of intellectually challenged, obese children who will be wondering why England still hasn’t won the World Cup thirty years from now. They will still assume the impediment to success lies with the manager at the time who, depending on whether he is English or foreign, be replaced with one who is the opposite.

Pep Segura, former Technical Director at La Masia, Barcelona’s famed youth academy, and now working wonders as Academy Technical Director at Liverpool observes that, “I have seen in my short time here in this country working at Liverpool, that there is just as much talent, just as many players with the same hunger, will, and desire to learn as in every other country. All that is missing are the means to enable the players and coaches to develop. That’s not down to the players. It’s down to the Academy heads, and those with a vested interest in youth football.”

Unfortunately, it would seem the only ones interested in youth football are the ones without the means to participate or establish and maintain an institution which encourages involvement. Despite what councils or the Premier League say, it is quite obvious that youth development features very low on their list of priorities. Due to the fact that they have developed such a large number of successful players, Senrab’s possible destitution should signal to the authorities that something drastic and remarkably different needs to be implemented quickly to avoid a further deterioration of English football.

5-a-side centres must be subsidised heavily to make it affordable for children to play at least twice a week, especially during the summer months. I would find it far easier to appreciate the work of councils in spending extortionate amounts of public money in trying to prevent local crime and racial offence, if they realised that by providing affordable facilities for youngsters to participate in sport, this would not only reduce crime levels by giving them something to do but increase the fitness, health and sense of community amongst England’s younger generation. While John Terry has come to the rescue on this occasion, I for one hope Senrab are able to continue to generate the money they need to survive and prosper for many years to come, but the FA and Premier League have to start adhering to their empty promises to fund grassroots football because nobody, under any circumstances, should ever be prevented from playing football for financial reasons.

Inter looking to hijack Arsenal move

Arsenal will have to wait to see whether they have signed Velez Sarsfield midfielder Rick Alvarez, who is the subject of transfer bids from Inter Milan and Roma also.

Palermo president Mauricio Zamperini has revealed that his side were interested in the Argentinian, but were put off by the £11 million price tag – which has been met by their Italian rivals.

“We were close to signing Alvarez for half the price they will now pay for him but my colleagues took it easy and no agreement was reached,” the outspoken 65-year-old is believed to have said in The Sun.

“Where will he go? He was going to sign for Arsenal but Inter Milan made a move and that is where I believe he will go,” he concluded.

The Buenos Aires side’s chairman Fernando Raffaini confirmed that the European trio were battling for his services.

“Alvarez could be in England or Italy because we are negotiating with several clubs in those countries. Until it is signed, nothing is confirmed, but many clubs are interested, including Inter, Roma and Arsenal,” he concluded.

Bassong calls for Wolves unity

Sebastian Bassong has urged his Wolves team-mates to stick together if they are to stand any chance of staying in the Premier League.

The Cameroon international is on loan at Molineux from Tottenham, and his adopted club are bottom of the league with seven games remaining.

Roger Johnson and Wayne Hennessy had a confrontation in the Midlands club’s 3-2 defeat to Bolton last weekend, but the African centre half has called for unity from the playing staff.

“I think everyone has to deal with their own problems,” he told Mirror Football.

“If you start focusing on everyone else’s, you’re never going to solve your own.

“We’ve got to be more professional, focus on our own work and make sure what each of us is doing is right before opening our mouths and advising someone else.

“That’s what I’m trying to do – keep my head and ignore all the negative stuff.

“The most important thing is what happens on the pitch because that’s where we can fix everything else around us.

“It’s never easy in a situation like the one we’re in. It’s all about trying to get the confidence back,” he concluded.

Chris Hughton targets Newcastle defenders

Newcastle United boss Chris Hughton has admitted that new defensive signings are his priority ahead of their return to the Premier League.

Hughton has added utility man James Perch and former Everton full-back Dan Gosling to his ranks in recent weeks.

However, with first-choice centre-back Steven Taylor struggling with a shoulder injury ahead of the new campaign, the current Magpies squad is short on numbers at the back.

"If I look at what we've got at this moment, defence is probably the area where we're a little bit light," Hughton told the Northern Echo.

"With Steven Taylor and James Perch missing, we had young James Tavernier, who is normally a right-back, playing at centre-back, young Shane Ferguson at left-back and Wayne Routledge playing in a very unfamiliar right-back position. Defensively, we are stretched."

Hughton has already admitted his interest in Manchester United youngster Tom Cleverley.

He added:"In terms of the bigger clubs, once they've made a decision on what they've got, then they will decide who they can let go on loan.

"It's a situation where we have to try to be on the pulse as much as we can and hopefully we'll be there to make a decision when we need to."Subscribe to Football FanCast News Headlines by Email

Terry apologises to Capello

Former England captain John Terry has apologised to England head coach Fabio Capello for the comments he made during Sunday's press conference in Rustenburg.

The Chelsea star has been reported as trying to undermine Capello by calling for him to make changes to his starting line-up and tactics for Wednesday's must-win World Cup Group C clash with Slovenia.

Capello has already said Terry was wrong to go public with his thoughts and the defender has now told the Daily Mail: 'I went into the press conference with the intention of being honest.

"I was asked a question about Joe Cole and maybe I went too far. But it was never my intention to upset the manager or the players and if I did upset anyone, I apologise.

"I have told the manager he has my total support and I would like to stress that I don't believe I have been a disruptive influence in the camp.

"I would now like to put this episode behind me and concentrate on trying to win what is a massive game for England.

My club is bigger than your club

Writing about football rumours is generally a pointless business. The vast majority of the speculation is nonsense — freely acknowledged nonsense — designed to do nothing more than keep the whole tumbrel rolling. Like water on a prayer wheel, talking about football glorifies football, makes football stronger, and so serves it’s own purpose. Accuracy is generally an afterthought, if indeed a thought at all.

But while most rumours are nonsense, the reactions of the fans to them tend to be honest: I really would have liked Mesut Ozil; I really wouldn’t have liked Joe Cole. So while the mooted £1.5 billion takeover of Manchester United by Qatari Holdings remains the purest of heresay, neither side having even bothered to deny it, it still represents a chance for United fans to envision a life after the Glazers.

Elsewhere on this website, a poll asking readers “Would you welcome a Qatari takeover?” is currently 83% in favour, an approval rating politicians would kill for. And the promise is alluring: on the one hand, no more debt; on the other, no more debt. If we had a third hand, no more debt. Then maybe a couple of players on top of that. Did I mention no more debt?

Whereas for the prospective owners, it’s all about the cachet: owning the most successful club in Premier League history has got to be a major boost to the ego. It’s a few steps above a yacht as a vanity purchase, and it makes sense as part of what looks to be a coordinated assault by Qatari money on the sacred artefacts of football. First the World Cup. Then that long-held taboo: the space on the front of Barcelona’s shirts. Now United? Everything’s for sale.

It seems to me that the positive reaction from some United fans is both entirely understandable but perhaps a touch short-sighted. Indeed, it is perhaps not too much of a stretch to suggest that United fans would accept almost any alternative ownership, if it would mean removing the debt. Yet is it really better to be little more than a toy of the super-rich? Apart from the fact that there’s less chance of the club going into genuine financial meltdown, United is simply exchanging a set of owners using the club for selfish financial ends, to another using the club for selfish egoistical ends. The club is still being used by owners who care nothing for the club in itself, only for what it does for them.

The two previous takeovers under similar circumstances in the Premier League were, of course, Chelsea and Manchester City, bought by Roman Abramovich and Sheikh Mansour as the natural next step after shiny cars and super yachts, vital accessories for the international pastime of super-rich dick-swinging. They are clubs operated for the aggrandisement of their owners, rather like the circuses of Caligula and Nero, who derived great joy from watching indentured commoners kicking lumps out of one another. And what success they have had — this point applies to Chelsea only — is tainted by association with what Arsène Wenger rather cutely called ‘financial doping’. He’s a bad loser, Arsène, but he’s a clever man, and he knows a performance-enhancing injection of cash when he sees one. So let us be very clear: this purchase would place United in exactly the same position.

Such a takeover would also mean that the fans would be robbed of their only means of holding the club to account, the threat of withdrawing their financial support. The green-and-gold boycott campaign, while only haphazardly effective and widely disregarded, appears to have influenced the Glazer’s recent wrapping up of the PIK debts, and this is because the survival of the Glazer regime is dependent on the continued flow of money through the club. That stops, they’re screwed. But Qatari Holdings’ assets — estimated at $60 billion, or £38.5 billion, relative to which the mooted price for the club is negligible — mean that refusing to buy the tickets, shirts, pies or programmes won’t matter in the slightest. The fans would, finally, be totally irrelevant; their presence wholly optional.

It is worth remembering that these rumours have surfaced before, back in January, and amounted to nothing. And it is, in a way, a compliment to United that the takeover is mooted; the language in the press indicates that this is viewed as the pinnacle of the Qatari footballing operation, meaning United, in global brand terms at least, are the Koh-i-Noor of football clubs. Yet to see our first and only love reduced to arm candy, a trophy wife to fiscal power, flanked by an owner interested only in the reflected glamour that comes from standing so close to something so beautiful, would be to die inside. Just a little.

Bundesliga Review – Has four become three in the title race?

Four teams looked set to battle it out at the top of the Bundesliga for the right to become Champions after the winter break. However, with just over a month gone in the Rueckrunde (second half of the season) it looks like one team is about to bow out of the title race.

Having suffered a 2-0 defeat to Bayern Munich for the second time this season, Schalke’s title race chances are looking increasingly bleak. In the encounter on Sunday at the Allianz Arena, they were outplayed for large periods as the home side hit back after a string of poor results. The Royal Blues were forced into selecting third choice goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand, who originally did well to keep out a series of early efforts from the Munich front line.

However, the onrushing ex-Stuttgart keeper was beaten to a ball over the top by Franck Ribery. The Frenchman nonchalantly looped the ball over Hildebrand before stroking into an empty net from 20 yards. The away side then missed a glorious opportunity to get back into the game early in the second half when Joel Matip was put through on goal. He could only curl his effort wide and minutes later, Ribery sealed the win for the Bavarians.

It meant Bayern overtook Borussia Mönchengladbach who could only draw 1-1 at home to Hamburg. Gladbach took the lead thanks to a neatly worked free kick which was eventually converted by Mike Hanke. However, Tolgay Arslan grabbed the equaliser for HSV. Like Schalke, Gladbach will regret a missed opportunity as Juan Arango headed over a seemingly simple opportunity in stoppage time.

Bayern’s victory got them no closer though to Borussia Dortmund who managed to ease past Hannover. Robert Lewandowski netted one in either half before a stunning effort Didier Ya Konan spiced up proceedings at Signal Iduna Park. However, the Champions weren’t phased and sealed the win late on through Ivan Perisic.

This in turn left Schalke eight points behind their arch rivals with eleven games remaining. The ruthless manner in which Borussia Dortmund are performing makes a collapse look unlikely at this moment in time. However, the Royal Blues will be looking forward to having an opportunity to stunt BVB’s title challenge when they visit the Veltins Arena in April.

Destiny does not seem to be with Huub Stevens’s side, such has been the timing this season of managerial resignations, goalkeeper troubles, injuries and bad results. All have inconvenienced Schalke, so for them to even be in title contention is impressive. A small example of this occurred at the Allianz Arena on Sunday. Instead of the glorious one-on-one chance falling to, say Raul or Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, it fell to Joel Matip, a man hardly synonymous for his goal scoring ability.

Perhaps the tactical nous  has been lacking from Stevens in the big games as well. In the five matches so far against the teams above them, they’ve only won one and scored one. In the other four games, they’ve conceded nine and subsequently lost them all. What’s more their defence is not on the same level as the three sides above them, having conceded more than the top two put together.

There is plenty for Royal Blues fans to be encouraged by though with a very talented young squad which will improve with time. Also their attack has been insatiable and prior to the weekend was the best in the Bundesliga. It shouldn’t be forgotten they’ve already amassed four more points than they did in the whole of last season.

Huub Stevens must ensure at the very least they bring Champions League football back to the Veltins Arena. They haven’t lost to anyone below them since the 15th October, which should give the Ruhr outfit the confidence to achieve this goal. For now though, it looks like the title is out of reach for Schalke.

Fabrice Muamba recovery going well

Bolton manager Owen Coyle has confirmed that Fabrice Muamba is making good progress in his path to recovery.

The combative midfielder collapsed on the White Hart Lane pitch in a fixture against Tottenham earlier this month, but his coach has confirmed that things are looking better.

“He continues to get better, but remaining in intensive care,” the Scot told Sky Sports.

“When we went the other day and managed to see him, we could see the continued improvement and that all bodes well.

“I also have to say thank you to the press, the media, for how they have conducted themselves and the way they have given Fabrice and his family that privacy that’s been required.

“Again, now is the time when they need a little bit more time and space for Fabrice’s continued recovery, for him and the family.

“The well wishes have been really supportive and helped him no end and I think he has taken great strength from that. That will help in his continued fight to recover.

“We have always had representation at the hospital and that will continue because it’s important that we know he is getting better, which he is.

Vermaelen signs new Arsenal deal

Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen has signed a new contract at the club that will keep him in North London until 2015.

The Belgium international joined The Gunners from Ajax back in 2009, and instantly impressed with excellent defensive displays and contributing to the side’s goal tally in his first campaign in England.

The vice-captain has had an injury prone last year, but has agreed to prolong his stay with Arsene Wenger’s men.

“I am really happy to have signed a new contract with Arsenal. I always had the intention to stay here,” he told the club’s official website.

“I feel there is a big belief in me from the club, from the boss and from the fans and that is one of the reasons why I stayed.

“Arsenal is a fantastic club. We have great supporters, we’re doing well financially and we are playing with some quality young players now and they will develop, which is very good for the future,” he concluded.

Boss Wenger is also delighted that the centre half has decided to commit to the Emirates’ outfit, and feels the defender can play a big part in Arsenal’s future hopes for success.

“We are absolutely delighted that Thomas has signed a new long-term contract,” the French coach stated.

“Our plan is always to sign top quality players and with Thomas extending his contract, we have done just that.

“Thomas is a special player, who has always made a huge contribution on the pitch and we are looking forward to him being a part of our future at Arsenal Football Club,” he stated.

The news will bolster Arsenal amid constant rumours over their best players leaving the club, and Wenger’s next focus will be in convincing star attacker Robin van Persie to sign on the dotted line, as his current deal runs out in June 2013.

QPR ace Dismisses Reports Of Depression

Queens Park Rangers midfielder Samba Diakite has rubbished reports from major news outlets that he is suffering from depression and has returned to France to combat the problem, the Daily Mirror reports.

Diakite joined the West London club permanently in the summer after an impressive loan spell last season, but news was circulating yesterday that the Malian was not well. Diakite was as surprised as everyone else when he saw the newspapers for the first time and gave RMC Sport in France his initial reaction.

“I am going very well. I don’t have any problem, I was just a bit tired in the last few days,” Diakite said.

“My club had authorised me to spend three days in Paris. But I am not depressed!”

“My club is my job, it is my employer, I keep them updated every day.”

“As soon as I woke up this morning, on opening the newspapers I learnt that some were saying that I was depressed. I am now in London and I was at training today, so for me it is unbelievable.”
