Former South African fast bowler Allan Donald has said he will help Scotland paceman Calum MacLeod revive his career after the 20-year-old was left out of the national team over concerns about his bowling action. The right-arm fast bowler was reported by Brian Jerling and Enamul Hoque-Moni, the on-field umpires, as well as third umpire Sandy Scotland, after Scotland’s Intercontinental Cup match against Canada in Aberdeen. In their report, the umpires raised concerns over MacLeod’s bowling action and felt it needed to be scrutinised further under the relevant ICC process.Pending the result of the assessment, the bowler can continue to play and bowl in international cricket but runs the risk of being called. But MacLeod was stood down after consultations between Cricket Scotland coaches, the ICC and the umpires.Donald, who is the bowling coach at MacLeod’s county side Warwickshire, is confident that his action can be rectified but thinks he should forget about bowling again competitively for the next few months.MacLeod led the attack for Scotland in last month’s World Twenty20 in England and it was the television coverage which set alarm bells ringing at Edgbaston, where former Scotland allrounder Dougie Brown works closely with MacLeod as academy coach.Donald was optimistic and said: “Calum is a talented cricketer and we think highly of him at Warwickshire, and hopefully it will not take too long to correct this. But it will take a while because we have to remodify a few things in his action.”Until last year there was no problem at all but during the World Twenty20 from a certain camera angle it became obvious to myself and Dougie Brown and head coach Ashley Giles that there might be a problem. We have sat him down and talked to him about it and he has responded well.”I have spoken to a lot of people about this chucking issue and there are many inconsistencies in the process by which they judge if a bowler is throwing or not. Young players get used to doing something day in day out and we have to spot this in a young bowler earlier in their development and sort it out then.”

Durham complete massive win

It could have been over in one ball, but instead it lasted seven. In front of a crowd of about 30 spectators, it took Durham about four minutes to pick up the final Nottinghamshire wicket

The Bulletin by John Ward at Trent Bridge18-Jul-2009
ScorecardIt could have been over in one ball, but instead it lasted seven. In front of a crowd of about 30 spectators, it took Durham about four minutes to pick up the final Nottinghamshire wicket to claim victory over the only team that had looked likely challengers for the county championship title by an innings and 102 runs.Steve Harmison bowled three balls to complete his over to the top scorer of the Nottinghamshire second innings, Mark Ealham. Ealham did not add to his 17, nor the bowler to his six wickets, for 20 runs, in the innings. This left one of county cricket’s most renowned rabbits, Charlie Shreck, to face a full over of Ian Blackwell’s left-arm spin, and the bookmakers would not have accepted bets on his chances of survival. Somehow he blocked two balls, before lashing out at the third and slicing a boundary to point. He exceeded himself again next ball, aiming a drive back over the bowler’s head, but this time the natural order of cricket reasserted itself, as Callum Thorp ran from mid-on to take a good catch.Nottinghamshire’s total of 83 was their lowest against Durham. One hopes the home supporters who had to wend their weary way home again considered the rare spectacle of a boundary hit from local folk hero Shreck had made their time worthwhile, as they did not have to pay at the gates. One of the most disappointing features of the Nottinghamshire batting was that all of their recognized batsmen made a start. They all scored a few runs, at least four, but only three reached double figures and none much more. Having made their start, most contributed softly to their own dismissals. On their form in this match, it would appear that their role as Championship pretenders has been demolished. But one bad match, even one as bad as this, should not condemn a talented team – and the problem is almost entirely a batting one. The true measure of the Nottinghamshire team’s worth will be clear in the next two or three weeks as they attempt to recover from this catastrophe and fight back. Surely they are too good a team to implode in this manner again.

West Brom dealt big injury blow

After failing to beat Middlesbrough at home in their previous Championship outing, West Brom head into the latest international break in third place in the league table, eight points below leaders AFC Bournemouth and six below Fulham.

Before the Middlesbrough draw, Valerien Ismael’s side managed to beat Hull City 1-0 but were dealt an injury blow when defender Kean Bryan was forced off the pitch with a knee injury just a few minutes before halftime.

Now that some time has passed, the severity of this injury has become clear, and it does not look good for the defender.

What’s the latest?

It has recently been revealed that Bryan has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after suffering anterior cruciate ligament damage, which will be absolutely gutting for the West Brom fans to hear. They were rightfully sad after learning this news, responding to the player’s tweet with plenty of get well messages.

However, this will equally be bad news for Ismael as well considering Bryan was brought into the club in the first place as a replacement for Dara O’Shea who also suffered a serious injury earlier in the season.

Even though the 25-year-old, who is currently valued at £1.8m according to Transfermarkt, had only played nine minutes across two appearances in the Championship prior to the Hull game, which was his first league start of the season for the Baggies, it will still be a big blow for the club to not be able to count on Bryan as a defensive option from now until the rest of the season.

During the 40 minutes he played against Hull before suffering his injury, Bryan managed to show how much of a useful defensive outlet he can be for the team after making two clearances and racking up an average passing accuracy percentage of 88% with 28 passes completed out of the 32 he attempted.

Moving forward, with this news in mind, Ismael will have to make sure that the current defensive options he has at his disposal will be able to stay fit for the rest of the campaign and hope that O’Shea can recover from his injury as quickly as possible.

After all, he is still currently listed as West Brom’s highest-rated player based on his Championship performances according to WhoScored, despite only making five appearances, showing just how good he is for the team.

West Indies players refuse to back down

The West Indies players who declined to play in the first Test against Bangladesh are unlikely to back down and apologise to the West Indies board

Cricinfo staff14-Jul-2009The West Indies players who declined to play in the first Test against Bangladesh are unlikely to back down and apologise to the West Indies board, raising the likelihood of a weakened side for the second Test against Bangladesh even though they lost the first by 95 runs in St. Vincent.Dinanath Ramnarine, the chief executive of the players’ association (WIPA), said the players were united in their resolve. “They’re very strong … and although they want to play, they’re not going to back down under this pressure,” he said. Ramnarine added that WIPA had consulted lawyers and a number of legal challenges to the WICB’s position were being discussed.Jimmy Adams, the secretary of WIPA, told Cricinfo that the players’ stance was unwavering. “You have a group of players earning more from playing cricket outside the Caribbean than for the West Indies and they aren’t putting up with this crap. They have choices and they are prepared to exercise those choices. They’ve got fed up with things going nowhere and they’re adamant they need this sorted before they come back and play.”It also emerged that recently Julian Hunte failed to turn up to a meeting with the players which he had offered in an attempt to clear up the situation.

Newcastle eyeing Phil Jones swoop

An update has emerged on Manchester United defender Phil Jones, regarding Newcastle’s interest in his services.

What’s the talk?

According to The Sun, the Magpies are one of the teams eyeing him up as a possible target for the January transfer window.

The report names Watford as one of the other clubs interested in the English centre-back, whilst Championship side Derby – managed by Wayne Rooney – are also in the running.

Blunder

Eddie Howe, who is reportedly close to taking over at St. James’ Park, could make an early blunder by signing Jones from United. The ex-Bournemouth coach must avoid making a major mistake in his first window by opting against a deal for the Englishman.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-newcastle-howe-ter-stegen” title= “Read the latest Newcastle news!”]

Put simply, there is no need for the club to take such a risk with Jones when they can look elsewhere. If Newcastle are looking to sign players to help them avoid relegation then availability and reliability are two factors that must be closely considered and Jones’ track record suggests that he is a dud who will not be able to provide what they need.

United legend Rio Ferdinand once blasted him as a ‘waste of time’ for remaining at Old Trafford despite his lack of minutes on the pitch. He said:

“He’s done well. Listen, good luck to him if you can get it. Staying at Man United is a great gig, but I look at him as a person, are you really going to be happy sitting there all these years.

“There are players who are happy to just sit at clubs and not play and just chill. Winston Bogarde did it at Chelsea for about three or four years. Signed a big deal and commuted in from Holland.

“If I was in the squad with someone like that I wouldn’t talk to them. They are a waste of time, why would I chat to you and give you any energy, taking that away from my other teammates who are here to play and go into battle for 90 minutes every week.”

The defender is said to be on £110k-per-week at the club and has made eight appearances since the start of the 2019/20 campaign. Jones has suffered 22 separate injuries for United, with his latest one keeping him out for 78 competitive matches.

This shows how unreliable he is due to his injury situation and Howe should not be trying to take a risk with the dud in January. Instead, the Magpies should try to sign a player with recent first-team involvement so that they can hit the ground running in the second-half of the season.
