Rangers manager news on Ronald Koeman

Ronald Koeman is reportedly now ‘one step away’ from becoming the new manager at Glasgow Rangers.

The Lowdown: No Van Bronckhorst?

It looked like Giovanni van Bronckhorst was certain to be the successor to Steven Gerrard at Ibrox, as the latter left to go and join Aston Villa.

It was reported that ‘positive talks’ were held between the Dutchman and the Glasgow club over the vacancy, but it now appears that he is merely one of three candidates still in with a chance of taking the job.

One of those other coaches could well be Koeman, who has been linked with the vacancy along with former Chelsea captain and Villa assistant manager John Terry.

The Latest: Koeman ‘one step away’

According to Fichajes, Koeman is now ‘one step away’ from signing for the Light Blues, having emerged as a serious candidate to take over from Gerrard.

The 58-year-old is reportedly the ‘main favourite’ to take charge at Ibrox, although Terry has also been named as a possible candidate to succeed his former England team-mate.

The Verdict: Avoid

After ultimately failing at Barcelona, where he was sacked last month after leaving them ninth in the La Liga table (The Guardian), Koeman should not be top of the Gers’ list to become their next manager, even if he has won nine trophies in his coaching career.

He would also not be a popular appointment with fans, who need someone to get behind straight away with an important Scottish League Cup semi-final clash against Hibernian coming up on Sunday.

Former Ibrox player Van Bronckhorst would be the ideal successor to Gerrard, given that he is loved by many Gers supporters. He also has an impressive managerial CV, guiding Feyenoord to their first Eredivisie title in 18 years back in the 2016/17 campaign (BBC), as well as winning four other major trophies with the Rotterdam club.

There is still time to bring Gio back to his old club and duly forget about any further talks with Koeman.

The Ashes at stake in Oval battle

For the second time in four years, the destination of the Ashes will be decided at the same venue where the legend was conceived way back in 1882

Big PictureFor the second time in four years, the destination of the Ashes will be decided at the same venue where the legend was conceived way back in 1882. In 2005, The Oval in South London was the stage for one of the most wildly celebrated draws of all time, as a jittery England overcame their final-day nerves, thanks to an eye-poppingly aggressive 158 from Kevin Pietersen, a performance that carried his team clear of disaster and all the way to an open-top bus parade through Trafalgar Square the following morning. This time, Pietersen will not be around to mop his colleagues’ brows – his dodgy right Achilles underwent surgery after the second Test, and he might not even be fit in time for the tour to South Africa this winter. Instead, all of England’s hopes and prayers are invested in their other modern-day colossus, Andrew Flintoff, who missed the fourth-Test debacle at Headingley due to doubts about his right knee, but is certain to be thrust into the fray for what is scheduled to be his final Test appearance.Flintoff has said that success in this summer’s Ashes would be an achievement to surpass even his magnificent performance four years ago, and those sentiments have been echoed by Australia’s captain, Ricky Ponting, who has spent most of the year playing down the significance of that defeat, but has now gone on record as saying that this week is the perfect opportunity for vengeance. The quality of the cricket may not have touched the heights we saw when Australia were last on England’s shores, but the level of competitiveness has scarcely diminished a notch.Form guide (last five matches, most recent first)England – LDWDW
Australia – WDLDLWatch out for…Jonathan Trott: A Test debut is, by its very nature, an anxious occasion, but spare a thought for England’s 645th and latest selection. At the age of 28, and with nearly a decade of first-class experience to fall back on, including a stellar 2009 in which he has averaged more than 80 to date, Trott is as well prepared as he could possibly hope to be for such an auspicious occasion. But there’s no way that this was part of England’s summer masterplan. The loss of Pietersen, and the abject failure of a supine middle-order at Headingley, has forced the selectors into a drastic selection. Still, South African-born batsmen have a handy record in Oval Ashes deciders, so that’s something.Mitchell Johnson: Try as we might, it’s been hard to tear our eyes away from Johnson’s travails this summer. At Cardiff he was poor, at Lord’s he was appalling. At Edgbaston he showed signs of a resurgence but was still clobbered at five runs an over. And then at Headingley, everything clicked. Suddenly he was fast and straight, with a vicious bouncer and devastating late swing from a full length, and he was too good for England’s abject batsmen. A five-wicket haul was the reward for his – and the selectors’ – perseverance, and at last the hype that had accompanied him back from South Africa seemed justified. More of the same at The Oval, and England may struggle to stay in the contest.Team newsTrott’s debut is the big news, Flintoff’s return is the secondary story. Ian Bell’s promotion to No. 3 has raised an array of eyebrows from those who’ve studied his average in that position (31.00) and ascertained that he is a glug of ketchup short of a full bottle, and the identity of the fifth bowler remains the mystery to keep us on our toes until the toss. Monty Panesar is in the frame as a potential second spinner, Ryan Sidebottom is lurking to provide some extra lateral movement. More likely, however, is Steve Harmison’s retention on a ground that suits his style, with the unlucky Graham Onions returning to the bench through no fault of his own.England (probable) 1 Andrew Strauss (capt), 2 Alastair Cook, 3 Ian Bell, 4 Paul Collingwood, 5 Jonathan Trott, 6 Matt Prior (wk), 7 Andrew Flintoff, 8 Stuart Broad, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 James Anderson, 11 Steve Harmison. All week the talk from the Australian camp has left English observers incredulous. How could they possibly contemplate leaving out Stuart Clark, a player with 29 wickets in six Ashes Tests, and the man whose straight lines and subtle swing goaded his colleagues into abandoning their scattergun approach at Headingley, to dramatically successful effect. Two players, however, are competing for a recall. Brett Lee, the reverse-swing specialist, as Ricky Ponting described him this week, and Nathan Hauritz, the unassuming spinner who has been working on his strategies with Saqlain Mushtaq. Hauritz is probably the likeliest to return, but an all-seam attack deserves to remain the attack of choice.Australia (probable) 1 Simon Katich, 2 Shane Watson, 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Hussey, 5 Michael Clarke, 6 Marcus North, 7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Stuart Clark, 10 Peter Siddle, 11 Ben Hilfenhaus.Pitch and conditionsDry and bare, but invariably a true wicket, The Oval offers rewards to sides who risk two spinners, but there is plenty of bounce and carry for the seamers on either side as well. “Any bowler who is not on top of their game can expect to be punished, particularly once the batsmen are in,” Chris Adams, Surrey’s cricket manager, told Cricinfo. “Australia certainly have in-form batsmen at the moment, and it could be quite painful for the bowlers if they’re allowed to get set.”The big concern for both teams, but especially England who desperately need to win, is the weather forecast. It has been glorious in London all week, but the rain is set to return with a vengeance this week.Stats and trivia England have won 37 and lost 18 of the 91 matches they have played at The Oval, while Australia won 6 and lost 15 out of 34. With three wins, two draws and one defeat since 1985, it is England’s most successful Ashes venue in recent times. In the four Tests in the series so far, Australia’s fast bowlers – Ben Hilfenhaus, Peter Siddle, Johnson and Clark – have averaged 28.11 per wicket for their 53 scalps. England’s fast men – James Anderson, Onions, Stuart Broad, Flintoff and Harmison – have conceded more than 37 runs per wicket. For a full stats preview click here.Quotes”There is nothing bigger than playing a deciding Test in an Ashes series, and you have to grab these moments when they present themselves because you may never experience such a match ever again.”
“If we win this one it will be a far greater achievement than 2005. That was fantastic but the side had performed well over a period of time and we’d beaten everyone in the world.”

Boom Boom trades noise for effect

Shahid Afridi has gone from being the young teenager who spanked a 37-ball century to being the senior statesman entrusted with shepherding a young side

Dileep Premachandran at The Wanderers22-Sep-2009

Shahid Afridi has become more circumspect•Getty Images

Just when did Shahid Afridi grow up? It’s tempting to narrow the answer down to a few days in mid-June, when Pakistan’s Super Eight campaign at the ICC World Twenty20 reached the edge of the precipice. After defeat against Sri Lanka, the situation was simple enough. The next loss would be their last, the signal for the players to pack their bags and head home for the summer.Afridi’s lack of form with the bat was symptomatic of the team’s woes. In the warm-up game against India, watched by a full house at The Oval, Afridi walked out with Pakistan in big trouble at 45 for 3. A bit of circumspection would have helped but as soon as you saw the ball in Irfan Pathan’s hand you could almost sense what would transpire next. The two men have a history, to put it mildly, and when Irfan bowled one full and a touch wide, Afridi reacted with a wild flail. Had the bat connected cleanly, the ball would have cleared the rope by a distance but instead it flew off the edge to MS Dhoni’s right behind the stumps. The latest installment of the Pathan v Pathan clash of egos had gone the way of the younger one from Vadodara.Afridi’s dismal run with the bat continued right through to the Sri Lanka game in the Super Eights, and when he chipped in with perky cameos against New Zealand and Ireland it was convenient to disregard them given that neither team really gave Pakistan a game. South Africa were up next, in the semi-final at Trent Bridge, and on the walk to the ground it was noticeable just how many wore Pakistan jerseys with his name on it. Perform or perish, Afridi has thrilled fans’ hearts like few others.Even then, there was more than a mild buzz of surprise when he walked out after just eight balls, at No. 3. Wayne Parnell and Dale Steyn had come into the game with rave reviews, and many regarded it as an unnecessarily foolhardy risk. And so we waited, for the impetuous hoick or the wild heave that would lead to sage nods and raised eyebrows. This was Afridi after all.The wait was a long one. Afridi batted 46 minutes and faced 34 balls for his 51 before JP Duminy’s part-time spin did for South Africa what Afridi had so often done for Pakistan. Someone who hadn’t watched the game would have been entitled to ask: So, how many sixes did he whack? The answer was none. There were eight fours, but not one swipe out of the ground. This was controlled aggression, calculated menace, the sort of innings Inzamam-ul-Haq might have played. Now, three months on, Afridi leads the side, with Younis Khan nursing a hairline fracture on the little finger of his right hand. How had he changed, he was asked, from the teenager who spanked a 37-ball century to this senior-statesman version entrusted with shepherding a young and exciting side? “I have a beard now,” he said with a laugh. “I also have a wife and children. Responsibility has matured me. I still enjoy cricket but I try and avoid the reckless strokeplay now.”There’s been good and bad, wins and losses, smiles and cries, more the latter for me. It’s a struggle, similar to what life is like. I’m enjoying it and I will as long as I play. It’s an honour to be playing for Pakistan. To captain the team is a dream come true.”He remained quietly confident too that the Twenty20 heroics could be translated to the 50-over arena. “We all know our strengths,” he said. “Not only are we strong in batting, but bowling as well. It’s a balanced team. But I never take any team lightly any time, especially when it’s the first match of the tournament. We’re 11 playing against 11. We’re equal in that sense. We can’t think that we will win easily.”The self-belief and motivation that he spoke of will be most tested on Saturday, when they renew acquaintance with India. “I enjoy playing India the most,” he said, another smile flashing across his face. Having tormented India in both Tests and one-dayers [Chennai 1999 and Kanpur 2005 readily come to mind], he certainly won’t hold back no matter how high the stakes. “They’ve just been lucky to win in the ICC events,” he said. “Winning and losing is part of the game. All I ask from the team is for everyone to give their 100%. I’ll be content even if we lose. If you lose after fighting, even the followers don’t mind that.”By then, Mohammad Asif will also be available for selection after serving a one-year ban. “It’s good for Pakistan, his comeback,” Intikhab Alam, the coach, said. “The type of bowler he is, it’ll be a challenge for him. He’s a matchwinner and has that kind of ability. We’re all looking forward to having him back.”Regardless of whether Asif plays against West Indies, most eyes will be on the man the supporters would happily follow as though he was the Pied Piper of Hamelin. From enfant terrible to experienced hand and now leader of the pack, it’s been quite a journey, with huge crests and equally scary troughs. “I hope to come up to expectations,” he said. “I already captained in Sri Lanka [in the Twenty20], with success and I’ve been backed by the players. It’s a really important match and I’ll try and instill the winning mentality into the players.”Those who adore him call him Boom Boom. The explosions seem a little more calculated these days, and there’s a look in the eye which suggests that he may not go bust as casually as he once did. That 51 in the Twenty20 semi was followed by an equally responsible half-century in the final. Having taken his own sweet time to mature, Afridi seems to be loving this adult lark.

Aston Villa: Gerrard wants Traore sold

Aston Villa’s new manager Steven Gerrard has sanctioned a move away for Bertrand Traore in January, according to Football Insider.

The lowdown

Traore only joined Villa last year in a £16.56million transfer from Olympique Lyon.

In his first season at the club, he was directly involved in 15 goals (eight scored, seven assisted) in 38 appearances in all competitions.

But the start of his second campaign has been disrupted by injury. He damaged his hamstring in August and then suffered another setback on international duty with Burkina Faso in October.

Traore, presently valued at £18million by Transfermarkt, still has two and a half years left to run on the £78,000-per-week contract he penned in 2020. That deal made him the third-highest earner at the club.

The latest

A source at Villa has told the publication that the club will listen to permanent offers and loan offers for Traore during the mid-season window.

Gerrard apparently believes he has ‘too many wide attacking players’ in his squad, and he’s identified Traore as dispensable.

The verdict

Gerrard’s predecessor Dean Smith issued a glowing assessment of Traore near the end of last season, describing him as a ‘marvellous technician’ and promising that there was more to come.

But clearly the new man doesn’t share that optimism, and perhaps views the sale of Traore as a means of raising as much as many possible to put his own imprint on the squad.

Traore is still only 26 years old and his value is protected by his contract, so Villa should in theory be able to get a decent return on their investment.

Manou keeps Test flame burning

Graham Manou is putting off that chat with the Australia selectors over what might happen next

Peter English07-Oct-2009

Graham Manou’s hand has finally healed, but his Ashes memories remain fresh•AFP

Graham Manou is putting off that chat with the Australia selectors over what might happen next. He knows the answer: everything depends on Brad Haddin’s fingers and fitness.Manou was the last-minute replacement for Haddin in the third Ashes Test, had the best five days of his playing life, but ended the match with what would eventually be diagnosed as a fractured hand after being hit by Stuart Broad. In the next game Haddin came back and will have the spot as long as his bones stop breaking, which is a shame for Manou, who is by far the better keeper.Tasmania’s Tim Paine went over to England for the one-day series and has fitted in with bat and gloves ever since, leaving Manou in a tricky place. Being the understudy is always a worrying position, but Manou can avoid thinking about his international future by concentrating on the plight of South Australia, the unpredictable outfit he captains.”It’s nice to be home amongst family and friends, and to get back in the swing of things with the Redbacks,” he said. “An experience like the Test has certainly allowed my eyes to be opened even wider. More so to the realms of possibility of what our squad can achieve, not necessarily just this year, but over the next four years. This group certainly has the potential over the next little while to play some exciting and good cricket and hopefully in that next bracket of four years there’s a Shield victory in there somewhere.”The aim is as big as Manou hoping for a full series under the baggy green for South Australia haven’t reached a final since they won in 1995-96. One thing they have had during the off-season is a stable playing roster and the only major changes are the exit of Mike Deare, the SACA’s chief executive, and the batting coach Kim Harris, who was a strong ally for the top seven.”It certainly is nice,” Manou said of the lack of movement. “That’s what gives the group a bit of comfort in some ways. We always talk about playing our best cricket when we’re in a calm state, you certainly feel more in control of what you’re able to do individually and collectively.”Even in England Manou was thinking about what the squad needed to do when he came back. Only in the first week of October did he trust his hand enough to go on to the field, playing some practice games in Queensland. He knows that if the team has a strong season it will also help his claims. The misdiagnosis after the Test at Birmingham allowed him to stay with the squad for the entire tour, although he was unavailable for the final game when the fracture was finally revealed. “There obviously was always a break there,” he said. “It wasn’t until we went to Canterbury for the tour game [before the final Test] and I put my hand through a jumper and spread my fingers apart and it was quite painful. So then I had some scans and they eventually confirmed that there was a break in there.
