An update has emerged on Rangers and Gio van Bronckhorst’s attempts to bring a new striker to Ibrox this month…

What’s the talk?

According to TEAMtalk, the Gers are eyeing up a deal to sign an attacker in the January transfer window.

The report claims that Rangers, Norwich, Newcastle and Crystal Palace are among the clubs interested in signing the QPR centre-forward, Lyndon Dykes, although it remains to be seen how much the west London outfit will demand for his services.

Get it done

Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Ross Wilson must get this deal done for Rangers this month, as Dykes could be a superb signing and improve their current options.

The Gers are not blessed with an abundance of physical players who are capable of mixing it up in individual duels against better teams. This is highlighted by Leon Balogun being the only Light Blues player who has won more than 1.8 aerial battles per game in the Europa League this season, whilst Joe Aribo (2.1) is the only midfielder or attacker averaging more than two per game in the Premiership.

Meanwhile, Dykes has won  4.3 aerial battles per game in the Championship this term for QPR, having averaged 4.8 last season. This shows that he offers a physical presence in the number nine role which Van Bronckhorst is currently lacking in his squad.

Scotland boss Steve Clarke previously lauded the attacker, saying: “Lyndon’s a confident lad and so he should be. He knows what he wants.

“He’s not a big-head, he’s nothing like that. He’s done the hard yards in football, from Queen of the South to Livingston and he’s earned himself a fantastic move to London. It’ll be nice to watch him in the Championship next season.

“He’s going to be working with a really good coach in Mark Warburton so Lyndon can only improve now for his club and hopefully his country as well.”

The £3.15m-rated bulldozer has also proven that he can score goals regularly. He has found the back of the net 18 times for QPR since the start of the 2020/21 campaign and has scored four goals in six starts for Scotland in World Cup qualifiers.

Therefore, he could add goals to go along with the physical boost with which he could provide Rangers. This is why the Light Blues must work hard to secure his services this month.

وأعلن مرتضى منصور رئيس نادي الزمالك، أمس الإثنين، التعاقد رسميًا مع مصطفى شلبي قادمًا من إنبي، لمدة 4 سنوات.

وقال النحاس في تصريحات لبرنامج “ديربي” عبر إذاعة “القاهرة الكبرى”: “انتقال مصطفى شلبي إلى الزمالك كان بسبب رغبة اللاعب نفسه، رغم أن المصري البورسعيدي كان قريبًا للغاية من ضمه”.

وتابع: “اللاعب دائمًا ينظر لأندية القمة ومن الصعب رفض الأهلي أو الزمالك، ومرتضى منصور عمل الكثير من أجل ضم شلبي، خاصةً أن أيمن الشريعي رئيس إنبي صعب في التفاوض ولكن الصفقة تمت بنجاح”.

وواصل: “أنا وكيل مصطفى شلبي، ولا أتفاوض مع ناديين، وكان الأهلي الأقرب في البداية، وإنبي طلب من القلعة الحمراء في البداية 30 مليونًا وكان هذا الأمر صعب تحقيقه، ووضعت الإدارة 12 مليونًا وكان هناك تمسك بالتعاقد مع اللاعب ولكن صعوبة المفاوضات أفشلت الصفقة”.

وأضاف: “تم التفاوض مع الزمالك وفي النهاية تم حسم الاتفاق بين الطرفين، وتحدثت مع اللاعب وخيرته بين انتظار الأهلي حتى يناير أو الانتقال إلى الزمالك، واللاعب أكد رغبته في عدم الانتظار والرحيل إلى القلعة البيضاء”.

واختتم: “عمرو السولية لاعب الأهلي كان قريبًا من الخروج على سبيل الإعارة إلى أحد أندية الدوري السعودي أو الإماراتي، ولكن إصابته حالت دون ذلك”.

Matt Prior’s role as wicketkeeper for the one-day series in Bangladesh could be under threat from the uncapped Craig Kieswetter, after England’s coach, Andy Flower, hinted that they intended to use the games as direct preparation for the World Twenty20 that gets underway in the Caribbean at the end of April.The hard-hitting Kieswetter, who only completed his England qualification last week, was not chosen to play in either of the recent Twenty20 matches against Pakistan in Dubai, despite making an immediate case for selection with a matchwinning 81 for the England Lions against the senior side in Abu Dhabi.On Tuesday in Fatullah, however, he made up for lost time by cracking an impressive 143 from 123 balls against a Bangladesh Cricket Board XI, his first appearance in full England colours. He was then handed the gloves for the second match 48 hours later, and picked up two catches in a comfortable seven-wicket win. Prior, who was asked to play as a specialist batsman, responded with a timely 64 from 57 balls, to seal the contest with 11.4 overs to spare.However, when asked after the match whether Prior was still England’s No. 1, Flower declined the opportunity to give him his unequivocal backing. “I can’t tell you that because we have a match on Sunday and that would be telling you our side,” he said. “[Kieswetter] is in the squad as a wicketkeeping batsman, so it is an option.”It was a nice gentle introduction for him in terms of keeping wicket for England, in a low-pressure environment,” Flower added. “It was also an opportunity to look at him with the gloves on, [because] I don’t know much about his cricket. And it was also an opportunity for him to get used to the side, and for the side to get used to him with the gloves on.”The situation is unfortunate for Prior, who has done little wrong since reclaiming his place as England’s limited-overs wicketkeeper, particularly with the gloves, and yet has found it hard to replicate the counterattacking approach that he has made his trademark in Tests. In 30 matches since 2008, and from a variety of positions up and down the order, he has picked up 525 runs at 27.63, with an unspectacular strike-rate of 76.41.”Today was an opportunity for him to get up front and get some time in the middle,” said Flower of Prior’s promotion to No. 3 in Fatullah. “Batting at 6 or 7 is a specialist area and he’s shown glimpses of good skill and it’s not easy to bat in that area to put in performances that consistently catch the eye and make a difference. It’s a tricky area to bat.”If Prior’s future lies in the middle order, then Kieswetter – with or without the gloves – is sure to open the batting in Bangladesh alongside the stand-in captain, Alastair Cook, and at the expense of Jonathan Trott, whose standing as a limited-overs opener has plummeted since the tour of South Africa.Last week, Flower expressed his disappointment in the starts that Trott and Joe Denly had offered England in Dubai, and he clearly hopes that Kieswetter will gather sufficient momentum in the coming weeks to take straight into the Caribbean – where he can expect to form part of the 16th opening combination that England will have used in 26 Twenty20 matches.”We don’t know about selection for the Twenty20 World Cup, but if we’re to go with him, if he had a great series against Bangladesh, it’s a gentle introduction,” said Flower. “I thought he kept nicely. Some Everton fans have been left fuming over some manager news involving Frank Lampard.

Writing earlier in the week for The Times, which has since been shared by The Toffee Blues on their Twitter page, journalist Paul Joyce has revealed that the Goodison Park faithful have now started talks with Lampard over potentially becoming their next permanent manager, following the temporary appointment of Duncan Ferguson.

Lampard has been out of work since January last year, after leaving Chelsea in ninth spot despite big spending the previous summer.

It is telling that Thomas Tuchel came in and straight away won the UEFA Champions League with the same group of players.

Nonetheless, the ex-Derby County boss is still relatively inexperienced as a manager, and so the Toffees job may be too big for him at this moment in time.

West Ham United are now battling Southampton to sign Chelsea loanee Armando Broja according to reports.

What’s the story?

The Hammers have yet to make any marquee additions in this January transfer window, and David Moyes will be keen to ensure that his side can get some business done before the deadline next week.

Now, according to Goal, it’s been suggested that the London club are thought to be one of a number of clubs who have made their interest known in Broja, amid claims that Southampton are keen to sign him on a permanent basis.

Proving his Premier League quality

The 20-year-old has been in fine form for the Saints since his loan switch from Stamford Bridge, netting seven goals in 21 games across all competitions and proving he belongs at this level.

Standing at an imposing 6 foot 3, it’s no surprise that Broja uses his physicality to his advantage, much like Sebastien Haller was thought to bring when he was at the London Stadium.

As per Sofascore, he wins an impressive 4.9 duels per game, which is only a touch less than what Haller has managed in the Eredivisie with Ajax this season.

Broja also wins a quite similar amount of headers as the Ivorian (2.7 to 3.4), while he’s also slightly more clinical than the former Hammers man – this campaign has seen his goal conversation rate stand at 22% compared to Haller’s 20%.

CIES value him at the €40m (£34m) mark, which is unsurprising given his age and the fact he’s now doing the business in the Premier League, but he appears to be a real threat in this division.

Speaking after the Saints beat Brentford 4-1, Ralph Hasenhuttl said: “He’s a great threat. He didn’t have many poor games this season so today he showed again how dangerous he can be for the opponent and he’s very helpful for our game.”

If the Hammers can somehow manage to land him ahead of Southampton where he’s currently on loan at, it would be a major coup for Moyes’ side.
