Adventurous Surrey denied by Moeen Ali

Surrey’s hopes of recording only their second championship victory in three seasons were thwarted by Worcestershire’s Moeen Ali at Whitgift School

24-Apr-2010
ScorecardSurrey’s hopes of recording only their second championship victory in three seasons were thwarted by Worcestershire’s Moeen Ali at Whitgift School. The hosts looked good as they reduced Worcestershire to 168 for 8 – as they pursued a victory target of 268 runs in a minimum of 51 overs. However, Moeen added an unbeaten 70 to his first innings century to salvage a draw in a tense finish. It was a bold challenge by Rory Hamilton-Brown, considering that they had lost their first two matches, and it almost paid off after Andre Nel’s second ball bounced and left Phil Jaques to have the Australian opener caught at second slip by the Surrey captain himself for the first pair of his career.Jade Dernbach bowled Daryl Mitchell soon afterwards and Surrey’s hopes were high when former England offspinner Gareth Batty broke a third-wicket stand of 54 between Moeen and Vikram Solanki and went on to remove Alexei Kervezee and Ben Smith in quick succession.Batty, who has returned to Surrey after eight seasons with Worcestershire, pinned Solanki and Smith lbw and bowled Kervezee as he tried to sweep. He should also have had Moeen caught at silly mid-off for 16 but the chance went down and Surrey paid a heavy price.Moeen found some support from Ben Scott until he was lbw to Chris Schofield and although Richard Jones and Jack Shantry fell cheaply to Usman Afzaal and Schofield respectively Alan Richardson survived the final over from Dernbach. Moeen had defied Surrey for 50 overs in scoring his 70 off 147 balls with 10 fours and a six when they shook hands on a draw with Worcestershire 170 for 8.Surrey had started the day 85 runs ahead with eight wickets in hand and looked like running into trouble when Afzaal was run out by Shantry’s direct hit from backward point, then Hamilton-Brown was stumped heaving at Moeen..Not for the first time, they were held together by Mark Ramprakash who passed 1,000 Championship runs in his eighth match on the school ground and was on course for his 110th first-class century when he slashed uncharacteristically at Imran Arif and was caught behind. He had scored 82 off 170 balls, including 11 fours and a six.Batty perished in the next over but Steven Davies added an unbeaten 69 off 88 balls with six fours and a six to his first innings century and enabled Hamilton-Brown to make his declaration at 239 for 8.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced the itinerary of the ‘home’ series in the UAE against South Africa in October and November this year. The series will be shared between the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi and the Dubai International Cricket Stadium; the two grounds will join Sharjah, which has hosted Pakistan in the past, as Test venues in the UAE. The series will feature two Tests, five ODIs and a Twenty20 international.Cricket South Africa had agreed to the PCB’s proposal of playing a series on neutral ground, back in April. The PCB even explored the possibility of playing matches in Sharjah, but have decided to restrict it to two venues. Abu Dhabi and Dubai have hosted one-dayers and Twenty20s but never staged a Test.” I am very grateful to Dr. Mtutuzeli Nyoka (CSA president) and Gerald Majola for their understanding of our position and supporting us to make this even possible,” PCB chairman Ijaz Butt said. “I would like to especially thank the Emirates Cricket Board for their unwavering support to Pakistan Cricket.”Pakistan has not hosted an international series since the Lahore attacks in March last year, and was stripped of its rights to host the 2011 World Cup as a result of the volatile security situation in the country. The UAE, with strong links to Pakistan cricket, emerged as an alternate ‘host’ and Pakistan have played ODI series against Australia and New Zealand in Dubai and Abu Dhabi since last year. Everton: Lampard wants Ferguson to stay

Frank Lampard wants Duncan Ferguson to be part of his team at Everton, according to The Times’ Paul Joyce.

The lowdown

Lampard has been appointed as the Toffees’ new manager, according to Sky Sports, and he will be the permanent successor to Rafael Benitez, who was sacked on 18 January.

Ferguson was placed in temporary charge of the team while the search was ongoing, and he oversaw the recent 1-0 defeat against Aston Villa.

The latest

Joyce tweeted on Monday morning that ‘Lampard has asked’ Ferguson to remain at Goodison Park and be a part of his backroom staff.

The verdict

It looks like Ferguson will be accepting the 43-year-old’s offer, with journalist Alan Myers assuring Everton fans that the ex-Toffees striker would be ‘going nowhere’ after talks with the new boss.

The former Derby County and Chelsea manager will likely want to bring fresh faces to the Goodison Park dugout as he looks to implement his vision. Indeed, The Telegraph’s Matt Law said that the likes of Ashley Cole and Paul Clement could form part of Lampard’s backroom staff.

However, perhaps the new manager realises that keeping Ferguson on will score him some early points with Everton supporters, many of whom idolise the 50-year-old. After all, the Scotsman is something of a legend at Goodison Park, having made 260 appearances, scored 68 goals and won the FA Cup.

O time carioca tenta derrubar a liminar que deixou o meia livre.

Kirby gets no luck as Kervezee impresses

Moeen Ali has put Worcestershire the verge of a first-innings lead against Gloucestershire, but on another day Steve Kirby would have taken a bag of wickets for the visitors

Steve Kirby must wake up some mornings feeling rather like Sisyphus. He was the unfortunate fellow who so offended the gods that he was sentenced to an eternity of pushing a rock up a hill, only for it to roll down just before the peak. Which is how Kirby must feel trying to win games for Gloucestershire despite his butter fingered slip cordon and his mis-firing batting line-up.Just what Kirby has done to offend the gods remains uncertain. Sisyphus seduced his niece, took his brother’s throne and betrayed Zeus’s secrets; Kirby is, by all accounts, an excellent uncle and has shown no inclination to seize any thrones.Yet he has enjoyed no fortune. Despite earning a well-deserved reputation as one of the best fast bowlers in the country and coming tantalisingly close on several occasions, he has never won an England cap. And, on a day when he could easily have claimed 4 for 20, he instead conceded nearly six an over, remained wicketless and limped off the field 10 overs before the close suffering from what may well have been a broken heart. He deserved better. Generating sharp pace on a sluggish wicket, he troubled all the batsmen only to see two relatively easy catches put down off his bowling and several other edges fly to the third man boundary. The end result was a match that remains evenly poised at the halfway stage. Though the hosts, seven points behind third-placed Gloucestershire but with a game in hand, at one stage looked to be on the verge of establishing a substantial first innings lead, the visitors fought back strongly in the final overs. At one stage Worcestershire, with seven wickets in hand, trailed by just 31 runs. Gloucestershire then claimed 3 for 7 in 23 balls, as the day finished with Worcestershire 16 behind but only four wickets left. Gloucestershire, who have not won a first-class game at New Road since 1986, are right back in the match. The best batting of the day came from Alexei Kervezee. The 20-year-old, who qualifies for England in December 2011, oozed class as he cut, pulled and drove with delicious timing to pass 50 for the fifth time in the championship season. Twice he skipped down the pitch to loft the left-arm spin of Vikram Banerjee for straight sixes and his half-century – studded with seven fours and two sixes – occupied only 45 deliveries.Moeen Ali was slightly less convincing. Though he unleashed some typically languid drives down the ground, and flicked the ball off his legs sweetly, his innings was interspersed with some nervous moments outside off stump. Several times he flashed only to see the ball pass perilously close to the slips, while he also edged Banerjee between keeper and slip on 32.Still, Moeen and Kervezee’s partnership bodes well for the future of Worcestershire cricket. With a combined age of just 42, they added 107 in 18.3 overs of fearless, joyful strokeplay that helped their side rebuild from 107 for 3.Batting had looked far less straightforward for their colleagues. Both Daryl Mitchell and Vikram Solanki were undone by the extra bounce of a pitch that remains unreliable, with Mitchell caught at short-leg off the glove and Solanki caught off the glove at gully. Though Phil Jacques prospered for a while, he departed to an outside edge after feeling for one outside off stump.Things could have been even better for Gloucestershire, however. Solanki was dropped twice, both times off the deserving Kirby, once before he had scored and again when he had just two. If the first chance, to Steve Snell at second slip, was straightforward, the second, to the normally reliable keeper, Jonathan Batty, was as simple as they come. The value of Kervezee and Moeen’s partnership became apparent once Kervezee played around a straight one from Lewis. Ben Smith, who hasn’t scored a first-class century since the dawn of time (or July 2006 for those who like their statistics a little more precise), departed later the same over to a fine, diving slip catch as he prodded forward, while Richard Jones was bowled by a surprisingly sharp yorker from Gidman.Moeen remains, however, and, if he earn his side a lead of around 100 on the third day, will have done much to set up victory that could prove vital in the promotion race.Earlier Gloucestershire were grateful for the contribution of Chris Taylor as their batsmen struggled once again. They currently average the lowest score per wicket of any side in the country and are the only team without a first-class century in the campaign. It’s fair to say that some in the Worcestershire dressing room were underwhelmed by the comments about Matt Mason in the first day’s report. They pointed out that Mason’s record last season, 43 championship wickets at 27.58, compares favourably with most. And that he was more than capable of standing without help on a bus.Mason made his point quite eloquently on the pitch, too. While he lacked pace, he maintained a tight line and length and used his height to generate enough bounce to unsettle all the batsmen. Gidman and Marshall both paid the price for prodding outside the off stump as Mason utilised the uneven bounce sensibly and showed the benefit of his experience. He might easily have had a third wicket. Had Moeen, at third slip, clung on to a chance offered by Taylor when the batsman had just 50, Gloucestershire would have been 201 for 9. As it was, the tail carved out another 44 runs, with Taylor compiling his highest score of the summer. He pulled one six off Richard Jones but paid the price for making room against Alan Richardson was comprehensively bowled.Meanwhile Franklin departed to a routine outside edge, Banerjee was brilliantly (if somewhat fortuitously) caught at slip as he edged a full-blooded cut and Lewis paid the price for a flat footed drive.

NUFC poised to make key appointment

Newcastle United are reportedly preparing to make a big behind-the-scenes call following the end of the January window…

What’s the talk?

According to the Daily Mirror, via Caught Offside, the Magpies are set to make a decision on their sporting director appointment ‘soon’.

The report claims that they are now drawing up plans for the summer transfer window and this key appointment is said to be the first step on their way to making a move for Lille centre-back Sven Botman ahead of next season.

Buzzing

Newcastle fans will surely be buzzing with this news for multiple reasons.

Firstly, they will be pleased to read that PIF are now ready to put the wheels in motion months in advance of the summer. They appointed Nick Hammond as a short-term recruitment chief on the 17th of December 2021 and that gave him very little time to prepare for a month of business as the Magpies looked to strengthen their side.

Whilst they were able to bring in Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn, Bruno Guimaraes, Matt Targett and Chris Wood, they also missed out on some key targets. Deals for Jesse Lingard and Hugo Ekitike fell through on deadline day, with no alternatives in those positions coming in instead.

This suggests that the club made a mistake by not getting their business done early in the window as they were unable to strengthen the team in all of the areas they seemingly wanted to. Therefore, having a sporting director in place months in advance will delight the supporters as it shows that they may have learned from their error.

The Toon Army will also be buzzing with the appointment being set to play a role in the club’s pursuit of Botman in the summer. He could be a fantastic addition to Eddie Howe’s squad and one the fans could start to get excited about.

In Ligue 1 this season, he has averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.15. This shows that he is capable of regularly delivering top-class performances at the top level, which is why he could come in and improve Newcastle’s team – given that Federico Fernandez’s score of 6.77 is the highest any centre-back has managed for the club so far this term.

At the age of 22, the Dutchman also has plenty of scope for development and could be a signing for the short and long-term. This is why fans will be elated with the club’s plans to make a swoop for him at the end of the campaign.
