Rahul Dravid, the Rajasthan Royals captain, has said that he is unsure about his role in the future and he’s willing to step aside if the franchise finds a younger opener to partner Ajinkya Rahane next season. The Dravid-Rahane combine were the only pair to open in all matches this season, scoring 579 at 36.18.”I really don’t know (about my future). I will have to think it over. I would take a break and decide about my role. I will talk to my family and also the management of the Rajasthan Royals about my role and then I would decide,” Dravid said. “My goal is to develop young players. Rahane did a great job with the opportunities we gave him. We identified a couple of players in the other franchises who did not get an opportunity to play.”I don’t know what the rules will be in terms of trades and swaps, but if we can get one or two young players then I can always step back and play a different role. We’d like a good young ambitious guy to come in and open the batting for us with Ajinkya next season,” he said. “But if we can’t find someone, then there’s always the option of me playing, we’ll see how it goes.”Dravid, who scored 462 runs from 16 matches at 28.87 this season, said Royals needed to strengthen its batting for next season. “We don’t have a young top-order Indian batsman, we are trying to identify someone, there are a couple of good, young middle-order players in [Stuart] Binny and [Ashok] Menaria and we will work on them in the course of the year,” he said. “We also have youngsters like Ajit Chandila, Ankit Chavan and Gajendra Singh. I am sorry about the local lad Gajendra Singh who didn’t get a chance to play (this season).”Royals finished seventh this season with seven wins and nine losses. “We lost a few close games like the ones against Delhi, Deccan and Chennai and that hurt us,” he said. “I feel our fielding performance and bowling was the worst. I am disappointed but there are some positives too.”Despite the disappointing finish to the season, Dravid said he enjoyed captaining Royals. “It was a pleasure to lead the side and the support from the management and support staff has been top notch,” Dravid said. “As far as my own performance is concerned I played my role as the opener with Rahane to satisfaction. John Inverarity, Australia’s national selector, is keen to give David Hussey, George Bailey, and Peter Forrest the best chances of exposure to England ahead of next year’s Ashes series.

John Inverarity cannot say why Australia’s batting stocks are so thin in 2012, when in the past the country could boast as many as 10 batsmen outside the national team with legitimate claims to a place. But what Inverarity, Australia’s national selector, is sure of, is that David Hussey, George Bailey, and Peter Forrest are the most capable batsmen outside the Test XI, and he has resolved to give them the best chances of exposure to England ahead of next year’s Ashes series.The absence of Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey from the ODI team facing England in five matches has given Australia’s batting a slightly anaemic look, the full-blooded strokeplay and intelligence of the two older men replaced by less certain displays from Hussey, Bailey and Forrest. Opinions in Australian cricket on whether these three are indeed the best batsmen outside the Test side are decidedly mixed, but Inverarity spoke of them with assurance.”They’re the best we’ve got,” Inverarity said. “We made a decision six months ago that if through lack of form or retirement or injury there was a place in the team, we don’t want these blokes making their international debuts at Lord’s in a Test match, so we’ve got them going. They’ve tasted, they’ve toured, they know the guys, and they’re familiar.”When you select, you do the best you can, given the material you’ve got, and of all the players I speak to, whether they’re in or not in, if they’ve been dropped, I’m in the habit of saying things like ‘we’re on your side, we want you to go out and prosper, to do as well as you can, we want lots of people knocking down the door’. We want the players to know we want them to do well, but in the end at this particular point of history, there are not as many prolific run scorers outside the Test team.”Whether it’s a cyclic thing or people going into other sports or the influence of T20 and people concentrating on hitting it over extra cover instead of straight, I don’t know. But if you look at the 20-26 age group, we’d love to see more prolific players there.”Others to have tasted international cricket in recent times and not gone on to consistent success include Phillip Hughes, Usman Khawaja and Shaun Marsh. Inverarity looked to that trio among the next tier, and also made mention of Chris Rogers, the Middlesex and Victoria batsman, who played one Test in 2008 and is one of few players still playing to live up to the “prolific” tag, having reached 50 first-class centuries this summer.”Phillip Hughes is doing very well at Worcester. It would be unwise to rush him back in but I think he’ll come again,” Inverarity said. “Usman Khawaja’s over here with Derbyshire, which is great, they’re playing T20 at the moment, which is not really his game, but it’s good for him to be here for a season in wet and seaming conditions.”Chris Rogers made 173 at Lord’s recently and Shaun might come again if he gets his game settled. But the three we’ve invested opportunity in the last few months are Forrest, Bailey and David Hussey.”An advocate of cricketers who seek to widen their horizons as young men, Inverarity spoke approvingly of the moves Hughes and Khawaja have made to leave New South Wales. “I’m a great believer in when you get to the top of your mark to bowl, and when you’ve got one foot each side of the batting crease you’re on your own,” he said. “So you need to grow up as a young man, you need to develop independence, resilience, your own initiative, I think moving away from your support structures and having to stand on your own two feet enhances that sort of thing.”He was also dismissive of the ageist argument against the retention of Ponting and Michael Hussey, pointing out that fitness and health levels had greatly improved over time. “I don’t see why age is relevant,” Inverarity said. “If you compare now a 37-year-old with a 37-year-old of 25 years ago, in terms of the way they look after themselves, it is very different. Michael Hussey and Ricky Ponting are so fit, healthy and hungry, there’s nobody fitter than they are. If they’re hungry, playing well and they’re fit, why do we leave them out?”

وتابع رونالدو: “ليس لدي مشكلة في القول، لقد مررت بفترة سيئة في مسيرتي المهنية، لكن ليس هناك وقت للندم، تستمر الحياة، وسواء كنت تعمل بشكل جيد أم لا، فقد كان ذلك جزءًا من تطوري”.

وأضاف: “عندما نكون على قمة الجبل، لا يمكننا غالبًا رؤية ما هو أسفل، الآن، أنا أكثر استعدادًا وأتعلم أن هذا كان مهمًا، لأنني لم أكن قد مررت بهذا الأمر من قبل، كما حدث في الأشهر القليلة الماضية، الآن أنا رجل أفضل”.

It seems to have escaped many people’s attention that, despite the loss of Marcus Trescothick for most of the season through injury, Somerset have remained one of the Division One title contenders. So it was fitting on his return that they continued that impressive form on a rain-hit opening day against Lancashire.As captain, leading batsman and outstanding slip fielder, Somerset have struggled to replace Trescothick while he has been sidelined for the last three months with ankle ligament damage, yet they have remained consistent enough to be well placed behind the leaders, Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire.During a day with enough rain around to dampen even the most enthusiastic of county cricketers, it became apparent why they have been so consistent, expertly exploiting bowler-friendly conditions to make major inroads into Lancashire’s batting line-up in the 52.2 overs possible.Perhaps inspired by Trescothick’s first Championship outing since April, his comeback was overshadowed by an outstanding display from Peter Trego, their combative allrounder, who took his wicket tally to 38 by claiming 4 for 34. Bowling exclusively from the River End and benefitting from a stiff breeze that aided swing bowling for most of the day, Trego continued Lancashire’s desperate form in the defence of their title.Trego bowled six successive maidens from the start of the day and it was 41 balls before Lancashire were even able to score a run off his bowling. Bowling wicket to wicket and allowing the conditions to do the work, he had already dismissed openers Paul Horton and Stephen Moore by the time Trescothick allowed him a rest shortly before lunch with figures of 10-7-12-2.By the time he returned for his second spell in the evening session – rain washed out most of the afternoon – he was required to break up a stubborn 79-run stand between Karl Brown and Ashwell Prince that threatened to turn the day in Lancashire’s favour. Brown had battled for over two hours for his 39 when he drove loosely at Trego off the front foot and lost his off-stump, which precipitated a late collapse of three wickets for 15 runs in only 34 balls.Steven Croft followed five overs later, edging Alfonso Thomas low to second slip to give Trescothick his second catch of the day, before Trego halted Prince’s defiance with the first ball of the next over when he was adjudged to have edged behind.Only four more overs were possible before rain curtailed play for the final time and Lancashire, whose batting unit have only passed 300 four times in the previous 11 completed Championship matches, look unlikely to improve on that dismal record. It should certainly be an interesting Championship debut for Andrea Agathangelou, a South-African born batsman with a Cypriot passport, who will resume tomorrow morning unbeaten on 0.Lancashire, as they have to be wavering just above the relegation zone, remain optimistic and Brown believes the swing generated by Trego should also help their own attack. “Trego got a bit of swing, and if that movement continues it will really help our bowlers because Glen Chapple and Kyle Hogg swing the ball more than most bowlers,” he said.”Hopefully we can make the most of the conditions as well. He tries to do different things when he’s bowling, he tries to get you out in different ways and he’s quite clever the way he goes about it. I enjoyed the battle out there, getting stuck in, it was good fun. We are in a tough position in the league and we are going to have to fight our way out of it.”
