On Wednesday, Nigel Hilliard, the Essex chairman, said that the prospects of Monty Panesar remaining an Essex cricketer next year will be dependent on how well he fits into the dressing-room for the remainder of the season.Given that he has been in the middle for most of his first few days at Colchester, bowling no fewer than 54 overs, he has hardly had time to converse with his new colleagues. Yet, according to James Foster, his captain, the signs are highly auspicious.”I had been with him on an England Lions tour and I knew him to be a quality guy,” Foster said. “Monty has fitted in really well. He keeps himself to himself but he has shown great exuberance around the dressing-room and enjoys a bit of banter. It has helped that he has known other players from the past – he has played a lot of cricket with Ravi Bopara and against Gautam Gambhir.””I don’t know what has been agreed between Essex and Sussex and have no idea if he will be back next season – that is down to the powers-that-be – but there is no question he has gone down well. I thought his bowling was excellent on a good batting pitch which did not offer anything in the way of spin. His control was relentless. It does not look as if the pitch is going to break up, either.”The perception from the boundary was that Panesar was firing the ball in at the batsmen, striving for containment and maidens rather than enticing them into trying to hit against such turn as there was or over the top. Not so, felt Foster. “There was plenty of variation and he mixed his pace up nicely. The only way a spinner could get a lot out of this pitch was through control. He was bowling against good, in-form batters. That was what I, as a wicketkeeper, found to be exceptional.”Foster said the club had had to move smartly when they knew Panesar was being released by Sussex and was amused that Northamptonshire had arrived at Colchester at the start of this week anticipating that the England spinner would be turning out against Essex. “Monty could make the difference between us gaining promotion and remaining in the second division,” he said. “In theory, pitches take spin at this time of year and that is why we went for him. I am not sure whether he will play in our remaining one-dayers.”Panesar is staying in a Colchester hotel this week and will then move into the Chelmsford area. Foster said that as part of the agreement over his release from Sussex, he was not be permitted to join a Division One club – in other words, he would not be allowed to play against them for the remainder of the season. The Essex captain was unaware that Sussex had prevented him from speaking to the media during the Colchester festival.There was no play on the third day to test whether or not there would be anything in the pitch to encourage the spinners on both sides. The presence of Panesar has been well received by Essex members and supporters, but inevitably there has been the odd grumble over the wages that will be paid to him between now and the end of the season. He will remain on the same salary he was receiving from Sussex. After that, the club will be competing in a free market.

O treinador opinou sobre as vaias da torcida para Rodinei. Aos seus olhos, colocar a faixa de capitão no braço da lateral foi uma forma de premiar seu empenho:

-O torcedor tem suas objeções, mas entende a dedicação do Rodinei. Hoje o coloquei como capitão. É um cara que sempre trabalha mais do que 100%. Três clubes já mostraram interesse. Mas o torcedor é soberano e temos que saber conviver com a crítica.

Em seguida, citou outros exemplos para falar que o lateral-direito tende a cair nas graças da torcida:

-Outros jogadores também não contavam com a simpatia do clube até o ano passado, e hoje as coisas mudaram. São os casos de Pará, Renê e Arão. Hoje o torcedor entendeu a dedicação do Rodinei.

Ravi Bopara warmed-up for the forthcoming one-day international series between England and Australia by scoring 88 as Essex beat Derbyshire by 107 runs at Colchester. Bopara’s fine effort, from 87 balls, keeps Essex on course for a place in the semi-finals of the competition after they had totalled 259 for 7.It was a target that always looked beyond the visitors, who fielded a weakened side, and lost their first four wickets before the fifty was raised before eventually subsiding to 152 all out in the 32nd over.Essex left-arm seamer Tymal Mills took the wickets of openers Wes Durston and Chesney Hughes for single figure scores, with his pace proving too much for either batsman to handle. Reece Topley and Tim Phillips then made steady inroads into the innings, but former Essex batsman Billy Godleman did spare Derbyshire from complete humiliation with a fighting 60 from 74 deliveries before becoming one of Topley’s victims.Godleman shared in a half-century stand with Alex Hughes, who made 28, before being bowled by Ryan ten Doeschate, but once that stand had been broken, the visitors folded quickly. The last four wickets went down in as many overs as the innings came to an abrupt end.Thanks mainly to the accuracy of Tony Palladino, Essex were restricted to 66 for 2 after 16 overs, having been put into bat by Derbyshire. Former Essex fast bowler Palladino removed openers Gautam Gambhir and Mark Pettini for 21 and 23 respectively. But Bopara and Greg Smith were to provide welcome momentum with a stand of 80 in 13 overs before the latter fell to Ally Evans for 30.By this time, Bopara was moving through the gears and had struck six fours and three sixes when, within sight of his season’s second century in the competition, he was trapped leg before by Alex Hughes.It was late flourish by James Foster and Graham Napier that saw Essex to their imposing total. The pair put on 52 for only 23 balls, of which Napier collected 23 from just 10 deliveries before he was caught in the deep. Foster departed in the same manner to the final ball of the innings, his 41 containing five fours and a six and arriving from 24 balls.

– Falar em interesse ou não, as coisas mudam tanto no futebol. Qualquer grande jogador interessa ao Palmeiras, mas temos de entender o momento para ver se encaixa, a questão financeira, técnica, quantos já tem na posição. O São Paulo já está negociando com Pato, que rescindiu seu contrato com o Tianjin Tianhai (CHN) na semana passada. Ele jogou pelo clube do Morumbi entre 2014 e 2015, e vê com bons olhos a possibilidade de voltar à equipe. A diretoria tricolor, para não aumentar a expectativa da torcida, não dá detalhes sobre as conversas.

O Verdão já tem concorrência grande entre opções para os lados do campo: Dudu, Felipe Pires, Carlos Eduardo, Willian (recuperando-se de lesão), Zé Rafael e Gustavo Scarpa. A concorrência é menor entre os centroavantes, pois há apenas Deyverson, Borja e Arthur Cabral. Pato, porém, não é um “9” que encaixa no estilo de jogo de Luiz Felipe Scolari.

Por essa incompatibilidade e também pelo valor da negociação, Mattos prefere desconversar. Pato não tem vínculo com nenhuma equipe neste momento, mas não viria “de graça”. Como ele pagou a própria rescisão, será preciso oferecer luvas robustas para contratá-lo. Os salários também não serão baixos.

– A liberdade que todos dizem dá a sensação de que chama, paga o salário e vai. Os agentes hoje em dia são profissionais, sabem que a presença do Pato no Palmeiars, São Paulo, Cruzeiro, Internacional, no Corinthians e ele bem significa um retorno financeiro na frente, porque ele é jovem, pode ser vendido no futuro. Isto tem um preço. Sinceramente, não sei as condições financeiras, não sei o interesse dele, sei que estamos satisfeitos com o que temos. Aguardamos para saber o que vai acontecer de futuro – completou.

INTERESSE EM COMPRAR RICARDO GOULART

Quanto a Ricardo Goulart, o diretor de futebol fala na chance de mantê-lo por mais tempo. Ele está emprestado até dezembro pelo Guangzhou Evergrande (CHN), e o Palmeiras tem preferência de compra até o meio do ano por 12 milhões de euros (R$ 52 milhões). Mesmo que não acione a cláusula agora, Alexandre Mattos vê a possibilidade de um “casamento maior” com o camisa 11, que em seis jogos tem três gols marcados e três assistências.

– Quando o Ricardo veio a gente pediu para ter uma opção, deram até o meio do ano. Isto não significa que se não exercer agora a gente perde o Ricardo. Ele está feliz aqui, a gente também. Ele tinha uma proposta salarial mais alta para ir a outro clube da China. Foi fundamental querer vir ao Palmeiras, ele conheceu nossa estrutura e ficou encantando. Criou uma relação muito forte. A tendência é o Palmeiras na hora certa se preocupar com isso. Se for com a vontade dele e do clube, fazer um casamento maior – encerrou.

Bat first, win the match. That has been the pattern in all four limited-overs games in this tour. On none of those occasions has the side chasing even gotten close. With no overcast morning conditions to factor in, batting first was a no-brainer for Yuvraj Singh as India A piled on an imposing 214. West Indies A’s resistance was all too brief as they collapsed to 121 to on a day in which all three departments – particularly the fielding – went off the rails. It was a strong comeback for the hosts after conceding the one-dayers 2-1 after winning the first game.A run-riot was expected with the match being played on the same surface in which West Indies piled on 312 in the third one-dayer. The start provided by the Indian openers was electric. Length deliveries were pulled, slower balls were easily clipped, the spinners too were ineffective with the new ball and by the end of the Powerplay, India had raced to 74 for no loss.Sloppy catching, though, made the score look better than it was. Unmukt Chand was let off twice, on 22 and 42, and both were sitters. Veerasammy Permaul had it covered at deep midwicket, and managed to spill it. Chand later skipped down the track to the spinner and looked to loft across the line, and Jonathan Carter ran forward from deep square leg, but put down a regulation catch. His charmed life ended on 47, when, ironically, he was taken brilliantly by Kirk Edwards, who was running backwards from square leg, nearly colliding with the fielder from the deep. Such pieces of fielding were a rarity in the innings though.Yuvraj and Kedar Jadhav built on the start with a blistering stand of 80 off 38 balls. Jadhav’s innings was a mixture of powerful lofted drives and deft touches to third man. The ground fielding was poor at parts as the West Indians allowed easy runs to flow. Jadhav was harsh on the spinners, stepping down the track and lofting over the sightscreen.The crowd expected another special from Yuvraj, and he didn’t disappoint, slogging the spinners and punishing full tosses from the seamers. A low full toss from Andre Russell disappeared over deep midwicket, and the following ball only just cleared the rope, when the fielder back-pedalled over the rope. Yuvraj reached his fifty with a six over long-on, and for the fourth time in as many games, made it worthwhile for the spectators.The penultimate over produced a bizarre passage of play when West Indies were gifted four wickets in four balls. Jadhav was at the head of the procession when he top-edged to long-off. Yuvraj tried to slog the next delivery over the on side, but didn’t pick the slower ball, and was caught within the circle. Naman Ojha was the unlucky hat-trick victim as he tried to clear deep cover, but was caught by the sweeper Permaul.There was a hush as Russell and his teammates rushed to the boundary, amused at the turn of events. Yusuf Pathan departed the next ball, caught at long-on off another slower ball. India went from 189 for 3 to 191 for 7 in the space of six balls, all in the pursuit of boundaries. It’s possible that Russell may have been a touch embarrassed too at the end of the over, as he languidly walked to the umpire to pick his cap. There was no spring in his step because the damage had already been done. West Indies had a daunting task ahead of them.India’s catching was superior in comparison and as a result halted West Indies early as they looked for big hits. Rahul Sharma picked up his first five-for in T20s to wrap up the game in just 16.2 overs. Andre Fletcher threatened briefly, but West Indies failed because of their inability to put on any partnerships of note.Kieran Powell, the West Indies A captain, admitted his team were complacent in the field. “The catching has been a problem since the 3rd one-dayer. After I had the huddle with the guys we got better. I think we were a bit complacent today in the field. It’s one of the things we have to brush up on before the four-day matches. We can’t afford to let them off the hook and we’ve seen what can happen if we do.”

Rodrygo pela direita e Soteldo pela esquerda fizeram um bom jogo durante parte do primeiro tempo, ambos levando vantagem em cima dos marcadores. Em uma dessas jogadas, Cueva teve uma chance clara, mas finalizou mal, algo que tem sido recorrente para o peruano nesta temporada. Enquanto isso, o Dragão aproveitava contra-ataques bem armados para chegar com perigo.

Jorge, no entanto, era o melhor jogador do Peixe em campo. Praticamente como um meia durante toda a partida, arriscou lances de habilidade, com dribles curtos e velocidade, para tentar romper as linhas bem organizadas pelo adversário. Sem posição fixa, principalmente quando o Santos teve a bola, o lateral-esquerdo passou a receber marcação individual, após o time ficar com um homem a menos pela expulsão de Gustavo Henrique. Pelo que jogou, o recém-contratado deverá ser peça importante para este ano.

O vermelho para o zagueiro fez com que Sampaoli recuasse Yuri para uma função quase como terceiro zagueiro, deixando espaço no meio-campo, preenchido com a entrada de Alison.
