Leeds fans expecting big things from Jack Harrison after impressive showing

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United fans on Twitter are expecting big things from Jack Harrison this season after his impressive performance in the Whites’ first pre-season friendly against York City.

The winger scored twice and assisted once in the first half before being subbed off in the 62nd minute as Marcelo Bielsa fully rotated his XI.

Fans had previously been critical of Harrison due to his poor performances last term. His return in terms of goal-involvements last season was rather poor as he scored four times and provided three assists.

Supporters were impressed at his first showing this season though, and it’s hard to disagree with them.

He had an incredible partnership with Barry Douglas down the left, and his two goals were both well taken.

Certain fans allowed themselves to get carried away. One stated that Harrison could win the Ballon d’Or next year, while another joked that he could be Leeds’ equivalent to Lionel Messi.

Wolves fans buzzing after Gibbs-White’s first senior goal

[ad_pod ]

Wolves’ young star Morgan Gibbs-White finally opened his goalscoring account for the club with a fine strike during their 4-0 victory over Premier League rivals Newcastle United in the Premier League Asia Trophy.

The teenager is an academy graduate who made his debut aged just 16 in Wolves’ FA Cup win over Stoke City back in January 2017. Since then he has gone on to appear for the first-team 54 times, the majority of which came last season as he played in 31 matches, registering one assist.

A host of the Molineux fanbase took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the goal with the overriding consensus being that the 19-year-old has a great future ahead of him as one supporter believed he will play a big part in the team this coming campaign.

Another fan claimed that the youngster is going to be amazing this season which was reinforced by a further opinion that Gibbs-White would score eight goals from midfield.

The 19-year-old doubled Wolves’ lead in the 32nd minute firing low past Freddie Woodman after capitalising on the Magpies’ poor defending.

Here’s the best of the reaction from Wolves supporters:

Manchester United fans react after confirmation of new deal for Dean Henderson

[ad_pod ]

After impressing on a season-long loan deal at Sheffield United, there was much talk of Dean Henderson potentially returning to Manchester United to compete with David de Gea for the number one spot.

The England U21 international’s performances for the Blades led them to promotion to the Premier League, and helped give them the joint-best defensive record in the Championship.

Now, United have confirmed that Henderson has signed a new contract with the club, which will see him remain at Old Trafford until 2022, but will return to Sheffield United on another loan for the upcoming campaign.

After hearing the 22-year-old had penned a new deal with the Red Devils, United fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the news and many were seemingly delighted.

Many supporters of the Manchester side insisted that it was “great news” and that Henderson could potentially be a future number one at Old Trafford; indeed, some even suggested that he could well be the “heir to the throne” once De Gea’s time was up.

Liverpool fans react to Philippe Coutinho rumours as Tottenham circle

[ad_pod ]

According to The Times, Tottenham Hotspur have made an offer to sign Barcelona attacker Philippe Coutinho on loan for the 2019-20 campaign.

Coutinho moved to Spain from Liverpool in January 2018 but has struggled to make his mark for the Catalan giants.

The Brazil international has contributed a respectable 21 goals and 11 assists in 76 appearances for Barcelona but he struggled to make his mark last season – netting just five times in 34 La Liga matches.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino briefly coached Coutinho at Espanyol.

And according to The Times, Spurs have made an offer to sign the South American on loan for the 2019-20 season, which is likely to cost the London club in the region of £21m if it goes through.

As expected, the Liverpool fans have been vocal on social media since the story broke late on Tuesday afternoon.

Newcastle United have officially completed the signing of Emil Krafth, a defender who arrives from Ligue 1 side Amines and signs an initial four-year-contract at St. James’ Park with the Magpies.

The 25-year-old right-back has had quite the ride in his colourful career. He only joined the French team last season on loan before making that move permanent earlier in the summer.

But that move didn’t last long as he has now arrived in the Premier League.

Krafth quickly took to Instagram after completing the switch to share the first snaps in his new colours.

Leeds youngster Alfie McCalmont could be Kalvin Phillips’ long-term successor

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In The Pipeline series, which takes a look at some of the most promising young talent either linked with clubs or emerging from their academies…

For Leeds, holding onto Kalvin Phillips this summer was hugely encouraging news.

After all, this was a period where they lost two of their brightest sparks from last season in Kemar Roofe and Pontus Jansson.

Phillips first attracted the interest from Aston Villa during the transfer window, a deal they hoped would cost them £14m.

That was until Leeds demanded £30m for their midfield general, a fee that didn’t seem to detract further appeal from Wolves and Bournemouth.

The 23-year-old played 44 times in 2018/19, featuring at centre-half and in a defensive midfield role for Marcelo Bielsa, becoming one of the key cogs of the side.

A graduate of the Thorp Arch academy, Leeds have just been given a big indication of someone who might well be able to play alongside Phillips or even become his successor if he does actually move on at a later date.

Against Salford on Tuesday night, Bielsa handed a senior debut to midfielder Alfie McCalmont from the bench, someone who has popped up in two positions for the U23s.

The Northern Irishman has played in more forward areas but also in a holding position too.

Leeds have numerous options in attacking midfield with Mateusz Klich and Mateusz Bogusz possessing the ability to play there, as well as Tyler Roberts and Pablo Hernandez too.

Therefore, an opening could well lie in defensive midfield instead, particularly if Phillips ends up playing at the back as he did last season.

Despite being different in style to the Leeds mainstay, showing less aggression, McCalmont displayed some of the characteristics required to play in that holding role in the 26 minutes he was on the pitch against Salford.

Per Wyscout, he made one tackle, interception and clearance whilst completing 95% of his passes and creating a solitary scoring chance.

It’s clear that the teenager is rated highly, having signed a new deal in January before finally being given a senior run out this week.

The 19-year-old has a fine passing ability whilst his efforts to dictate the play have also been noted.

Following his performance in pre-season against York, Noel Whelan had the following to say about him:

“It’s going to be a fantastic experience no matter what comes of this young man. He’s there, he’s already shone, he’s already put himself into the fans’ thoughts as well so he’s doing his part.”

It’s probably no surprise, therefore, that after his first appearance against Salford, he’s earned plaudits from supporters.

They praised how he didn’t look out of his depth whilst his ability to play with both feet was also picked up on.

For McCalmont this is just the start, but it’s certainly a very promising beginning for the youngster who could well be utilised in defensive midfield if required.

Celtic fans fume as Neil Lennon urges "a sense of perspective"

The Celtic supporters are absolutely furious at Neil Lennon’s comments on the Cluj defeat, as the Hoops boss asked his doubters to put the loss into perspective.

As reported by BBC Sport, the Parkhead gaffer stated: “We’ve lost one game and we scored three goals in it. There has to be a sense of perspective.”

It’s safe to say this hasn’t gone down well with an already raging fanbase.

The supporters were already furious with their club thanks to a woeful summer both on and off the pitch. The infamous Champions League exit brought supporters’ frustrations to boiling point, having seen their club fail to address problem positions in the starting XI and squad despite big money coming in this summer.

His advice to the fans has only served to infuriate them even further. Not only have the words themselves annoyed the supporters, but the fact that Lennon is brushing aside such a humiliating defeat has irked the Parkhead faithful.

Here’s how Lennon’s advice to the supporters went down on Twitter (spoiler: not very well)…

Arsenal cannot allow Nacho Monreal to leave before January

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to Spanish publication Marca, Nacho Monreal will sign for Real Sociedad before the end of the European transfer window.

What’s the word?

Considering the arrival of Kieran Tierney at the Emirates Stadium this summer it’s hardly a surprise to see one of Arsenal’s left-back options linked with a switch away from the club.

That just so happens to be Monreal who despite not securing a move during the British transfer window, could still leave with the market currently open for other clubs across the continent.

Marca claims that the Spaniard will sign for Real Sociedad on a two-year contract and that an agreement with Arsenal is now very advanced.

However, it would seem a questionable decision from the Gunners to allow this switch to go through.

Arsenal can’t sell now

At the age of 33, Monreal’s time at Arsenal is understandably coming to an end and with Sead Kolasinac waiting in the wings, it’s not a great surprise to see he’s the more likely of the two to leave.

Yet this isn’t something the Gunners can afford to do at the moment.

Why? Because their other two left backs are far from set.

The fact of the matter is that they could leave themselves slim on the ground in terms of options during the first part of the season.

For the time being Tierney is out with an injury and won’t return until October at the earliest because of a groin issue.

Kolasinac’s role in the side is far from certain either. He was left out on the opening weekend because of the club taking precautionary measures over his and Mesut Ozil’s security.

Therefore, Monreal feels like the only fit choice at the moment and they’d be making a considerable error by letting the 5 foot 11 defender to leave now.

If Tierney returns to full fitness in a few months time then moving on the Spain international during the January transfer window seems like a far better option.

QPR ace Ryan Manning fits Mark Warburton’s 3-5-2 system like a glove

[ad_pod ]

QPR have enjoyed a steady, albeit unspectacular, start to the campaign under Mark Warburton using a 4-2-3-1 formation, which had seen them win two and lose two of their five Championship games before Saturday’s meeting with Sheffield Wednesday.

However, for the trip to Hillsborough, Warburton decided to mix things up a bit.

What did he do?

The former Rangers and Brentford boss decided to ditch his 4-2-3-1 system and adopt a 5-3-2 formation, which seemed to move into a 3-5-2 with wing-backs when the R’s went forward.

It appeared to have the desired effect as two second-half goals from Jordan Hugill in the space of four minutes handed the Londoners all three points, after Steven Fletcher had given the Owls a 23rd-minute lead.

Whilst a lot of QPR players enjoyed a good afternoon with some fine showings out there, one man performed exceptionally well and appears to fit this new system like a glove.

Who was it?

Ryan Manning. The left-back has started all six of the R’s Championship games so far this season, but hadn’t performed anywhere near as well as he did on Saturday in any of the previous outings.

The 23-year-old had previously racked up the following WhoScored ratings for his performances before the win over Sheffield Wednesday:

– 6.91 vs Stoke

– 7.1 vs Huddersfield

– 6.79 vs Bristol City

– 6.74 vs Swansea

– 7.07 vs Wigan

Watch the video below to find out how CR7 achieves some his best skills…

At Hillsborough however, Manning recorded a rating of 8.48, blowing all of his previous ratings out of the water.

The Irishman also made three key passes in his new left-back role – more than anyone else on the pitch – with one of them earning him an assist. Additionally, Manning made a game-high four dribbles and was fouled five times in what was an all-action performance from him up and down the left-flank.

Out of all the QPR players who impressed in this new system, it appears to suit Manning’s traits the best.

Rangers loanee Jake Hastie impresses fans on Rotherham debut

Lots of fans have been reacting to Jake Hastie’s Rotherham debut, as the Rangers youngster grabbed a goal in his first appearance for his loan club.

The Hastie signing was slightly baffling in a way. Rangers penned the youngster to a four-year deal back in May, but signed several other wingers, leaving the former Motherwell man with no choice but to pursue a loan move.

But it seems that decision is already paying off, as he impressed on his debut in League One.

Rotherham were beaten 2-1 at Doncaster this weekend, and while there was an element of luck about his goal, Hastie was one of the few bright sparks for Paul Warne’s side.

The Millers sit 15th in the table after the weekend’s action, with Warne now facing some pressure after the derby defeat.

Yet, if Hastie can keep up the form he showed on Saturday then the 20 year-old may just turn things around for his loan side, and a strong spell in England would surely be of huge benefit to both him and his parent club.
