Newcastle United: Mark Douglas makes takeover claim as club release statement

Mark Douglas has made a claim on his official Twitter page about the proposed takeover of Newcastle United by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabian (KSA) group.

As per his tweet, The Chronicle journalist has claimed that “it’s over…but it’s not over” with regards to the prospective £300m deal between the Saudi-led consortium and Mike Ashley in reaction to a statement released by the Tyneside club.

As per the statement, the Magpies have confirmed that the Premier League and its chief executive have rejected the takeover bid which was made by the Middle Eastern crown prince Mohammed bin Salman (MbS), his country’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), businesswoman/head of PCP Capital Partners Amanda Staveley and the billionaire Reuben brothers, originally from India but now based in London.

Newcastle made this decision based on the Owners’ and Directors’ Test (ODT) that was made by the Premier League and its CEO in order to show if the would-be owners are fit and proper people to run a top-flight club.

The statement also claims that this conclusion has been reached despite NUFC providing the Premier League with overwhelming evidence and legal opinions that PIF is independent and autonomous of the KSA government.

The club do not believe that the EPL or Masters acted appropriately in relation to this matter and will be considering all of the relevant options available to them.

As Douglas points out, the decision to reject the takeover may well be challenged, meaning that the saga might not entirely be over just yet.

Geordies, should the club challenge the decision? Comment below with your views!

As the season draws closer, can Liverpool keep the League at arm’s length?

So, the dust has settled on the tumultuous, glorious 2019/20 season, when even a global pandemic didn’t dampen the spirits of Liverpool fans as they watched their team claim the crown for the first time since 1990. Not content with merely winning the league, the Reds smashed records on their way to the top, including having had the biggest lead in the history of the top-flight, and having the earliest title win ever.

Of course, the one thing tougher than getting back on the perch is staying there. And with trailers like Manchester City and Chelsea reloading their squads during the transfer window, all eyes are on how new blood might rejuvenate Liverpool’s rivals as the struggle for supremacy in the new season begins.

First up, let’s consider the Reds themselves, and how the squad may look in the very near future. There’s been a lot of debate about Roberto Firmino this year, with the Brazilian striker receiving flack for his scoring abilities in 2019/20. Sure, he achieved a haul of nine goals during the Premier League campaign, but only one was at home in Anfield, and he significantly under-performed in the context of his xG, or Expected Goal, numbers. As a result, despite being an integral part of the formidable front three alongside Mané and Salah, and despite being a bona fide Reds superstar, many continue to debate his value to Liverpool.

Of course, his advocates point out that Firmino’s worth can’t be measured in goals alone, and Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has praised him as the “engine room” for both offense and defence. “We just don’t think about it,” Klopp said. “It’s not important who scores. We need Bobby for other things. We need Bobby in exactly the spaces where he was today. We need him as the link-up for all the other things.”

And the nay-sayers have since been silenced by Firmino’s performance in the pre-season friendly against Stuttgart, where he contributed to the 3-0 thrashing and has notched 3 goals in 3 pre-season fixtures. But, despite their continued strong showing in the aftermath of the triumphant season, Liverpool won’t be resting on their laurels. All eyes are on Thiago Alcantara, the Spanish midfielder who played such a key part in Bayern Munich’s victory over PSG in the Champions League final. There has been heated speculation that Alcantara is a shoo-in for a transfer to Liverpool, which would make the Reds even more dangerous when the ball is in the middle of the field. Questions definitely still remain over how Liverpool’s midfield will look when they line up against Leeds on September 12th, as the future of Gini Wijnaldum has also been mired in speculation. Nonetheless, the pursuit of Thiago is proof that Klopp is not being complacent. As Sky Sports journalist Vinny O’Connor has put it, “They have to improve because if you look at the likes of Chelsea at the moment, Man City are going to improve, Man Utd have had a run that has taken them into the Champions League once again.”

Speaking of the other big teams, how are things shaping up for them during the summer transfer window? Manchester City, runners up in 2019/20, are methodically rebuilding in the run-up to the next season, signing Valencia winger Ferran Torres (who is hungry for Man City’s “open, aggressive style”), and Bournemouth defender Nathan Aké. Indeed, shoring up their defence is a key concern for Pep Guardiola, as it seems he still has his sights set on Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly. The Senegalese star is one of the top centre-backs in Europe, and could make a decisive difference to City’s ambitions to topple Liverpool. And how can we ignore the rampant speculation surrounding that little Argentine player at Barcelona who seemed keen for a reunion with Pep. Whilst it won’t be happening this season, who knows if we’ll be seeing Messi line-up in sky blue in a year’s time.

As for the other half of Manchester… Well, Gary Neville has been damningly unequivocal about how the Red Devils absolutely require rebuilding, saying: “I don’t think this Manchester United team at this moment can challenge for the title next season… I think that Ole needs three or four more of those as a minimum before he can even think about getting up into third or second place.”

It’s no secret that United would like Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho to be a part of any potential restructuring, but negotiations have been mired in mud, with the transfer fee among the sticking points. The goal-scoring machine that is Sancho would certainly bring some all-important pep to Man United’s attacking line-up, and fans are impatient for a breakthrough here. Yet it’s also been reported that Manchester United are prepared to pay even more than the Sancho asking price for Barcelona’s teenage sensation Ansu Fati.  Whatever happens, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer seems determined to do whatever it takes to regain United’s former glory, saying: “We have to be better. We’re too far away from where we need to be and want to be.” Ole will be hoping the introduction of Donny van de Beek into a midfield with Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes is a step in that direction.

Meanwhile Chelsea have been the busiest of the bunch this transfer window, with deals confirmed for Bayern Leverkusen midfielder Kai Havertz, Leicester left back Ben Chilwell, and one-time PSG captain Thiago Silva. But the big, looming question for Frank Lampard is how to replace the Blues’ goalkeeper. Current No.1 Kepa Arrizabalaga has been criticised for his dismal performances last season, with former Premier League player Jamie O’Hara dismissing him as a “complete waste of money”.

Lampard is evidently dissatisfied, and it’s clear Chelsea cannot move forwards with a serious bid to climb up the table without sorting out their goalie conundrum. A name currently in contention is Lille’s Mike Maignan, although all bets are off on how things will pan out between the sticks with what may be Chelsea’s most crucial transfer of the window. All in all, it promises to be an exciting new dawn for the Blues, and with the money spent it’s evident Roman Abramovich has renewed enthusiasm and appetite to take on Manchester City and Liverpool.

On to Leicester City, who were riding high in the top four – with a Champions League spot within touching distance – before being cruelly displaced to fifth place by Manchester United in their last league fixture. What now for the club?

One key concern is finding a striker to partner with Jamie Vardy, with manager Brendan Rodgers keen to bolster the “attacking element of the team”. A hotly tipped candidate in the frame is Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard, who had a working relationship with Rodgers back when the latter was Celtic manager. But the Foxes also need to consider the damage inflicted on their momentum by injuries. Many have noted that, if they want any hope of catching Liverpool, the squad needs to build up depth so they won’t be left flailing when key players are sidelined by busted body parts, which was a major problem for the team last season. Losing Ben Chillwell to what some fans may consider a rival is a blow, but eagerly await the debut of a replacement who impressed with Atalanta this season in Timothy Castagne.

And then there’s Spurs, who finished in sixth place. Despite the lack of fireworks, manager Jose Mourinho has been as cool and unruffled as ever, bluntly refusing to get caught up in transfer mania. “Are we going to buy 10 players? No,” he said. “Are we going to buy players for £100m? No. We are going to improve. We are going to keep the structure of this team because we have absolutely no interest in seeing one of our fundamental players leave.”

That said, some cover for Harry Kane wouldn’t go amiss, and Napoli’s Arkadiusz Milik has been reported to be in “tentative talks” to provide the requisite back-up firepower for the Lilywhites. Meanwhile, midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg made the move over from Southampton in August. Will his arrival, along with that of Burnley’s Joe Hart, actually re-shape Tottenham’s fortunes in the coming season and cause the likes of Man City or Liverpool to sweat? It’s going to be very interesting to find out.

Sunderland: Championship sides emerge in Mateo Bajamich race

Sunderland have been joined by ‘two Championship’ sides in the race to sign Argentine striker Mateo Bajamich, according to Sunderland Echo.

After making some significant changes to his squad this summer, Sunderland boss Phil Parkinson has recently been linked with a potential new striker signing.

Links of a move for Bajamich have been developing in recent weeks with Major League Soccer side Houston Dynamo said to be leading the race to bring in the young forward,

Argentine media outlet Mundo D are reporting that a bid has been made by the American club in the region of £1m, going way above the Black Cats’ reported offer of £500,000.

With the youngster’s future very much up in the air, Sunderland Echo have now reported that two Championship clubs are also showing interest and that the player’s agent, Lucas Rimoldi, has received enquiries from European sides keen on a loan deal.

Such interest could see Sunderland potentially drop out of the race to sign the striker with financial restraints on the League One club due to the EFL salary cap.

Valued at £1.44 by Transfermarkt, Bajamich currently plays in his homeland of Argentina for Instituto AC and has scored nine goals in 29 appearances.

You would have to imagine that Sunderland would be out of the race if Championship clubs are indeed in the race, as well as Houston Dynamo.

Finances are tight across the Football League at present and the thought of spending almost £1m on a striker would be very questionable, especially given they already have the likes of Danny Graham, Charlie Wyke and Will Grigg in their armoury.

Do you think Sunderland can fend off interest and sign Bajamich? Let us know in the comments section below…

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard should start Jermain Defoe instead of Alfredo Morelos

Glasgow Rangers ace Jermain Defoe seems to have revelled in rubbishing Sky Sports pundit John Hartson’s claims after he arrived at Ibrox in January 2019.

The former Celtic striker told the Daily Record that Steven Gerrard does not know his best team.

And he blamed two big signings for confusing the situation after Rangers agreed to sign Defoe and Steven Davis on loan deals from Bournemouth and Southampton.

Hartson said “they brought in a big signing in Jermain Defoe, but it just confused the situation. It left Gerrard wondering who to play.”

And he added “Davis hasn’t kicked a ball.”

However, it looks like Defoe has had the last laugh, as he has been directly involved in 35 goals in just 55 games for Steven Gerrard’s side, including a hattrick against Hiberian in only his second Scottish Premiership start last season.

The highly-rated 38-year-old striker could displace Colombia international Alfredo Morelos after he came off the bench to score his first goal and supply his first assist of the season against Lincoln Red Imps in the Europa League last month.

Despite his advancing years, Defoe has routinely continued to defy the critics. He famously scored a stunning solo goal against Newcastle United at the Stadium of Light to win the Wear-Tyne Derby in 2015.

If you take a look at his heatmaps last season, you can clearly see his playing style hasn’t really changed a great deal with an even greater emphasis on being inside the box, although he has also become somewhat of a poacher-turned-provider.

He formed a prolific partnership with the more mobile Gareth Bale during his time at Tottenham Hotspur with the pair combining for thirteen goals between them in all competitions, via Transfermarkt. Imagine what he could do with Ianis Hagi fully fit and firing on all cylinders.

With Defoe working his way back from fitness after a hamstring injury ruled him out for the start of the season, Gerrard should seriously consider starting his old comrade up top for their next game which is a huge one against Old Firm rivals Celtic, and relegating Morelos to the bench.

Defoe was once described as an “unbelievable” player by his former teammate Alan Hutton who believes the veteran is more than capable of recreating his clinical form for many more years to come.

Meanwhile, Morelos rather tends to make a meal of things against Celtic as he has so far failed to score a single goal in the Old Firm Derby whilst suffering the ignominy of being sent off several times already, as per Transfermarkt.

This time Rangers need someone they can rely on and Defoe is exactly the type of player who can get the job done. He is a goalscorer with a much calmer temperament and is someone who has experienced huge derbies in the past, including the one in North London as well as the Tyne-Wear clash.

Glasgow Rangers may forever regret not signing Ian Rush

Ian Rush remains one of Britain’s greatest strikers of all time. The former Wales international, who was described by the Yorkshire Evening Post as a “prolific striker” for Leeds United, is most famous for his two spells with Liverpool, where he scored 346 goals in 640 appearances, a club record which still stands to this day.

According to The Daily Mail, as relayed by The Scottish Sun, Rush came so close to signing Glasgow Rangers before he moved to Anfield instead. Picture this for a second – Rangers legend Ally McCoist and Rush up front. Just imagine what the pair might have been able to achieve at home and abroad. It almost doesn’t bear thinking about.

One of the greatest ever strikers to play for Liverpool, he began his career as a professional footballer at Chester City, even scoring for the Seals in a shock 2-0 win over Newcastle United in the FA Cup. He eventually left Chester for Liverpool for a then-record fee for a teenager at the time and went on to form a deadly partnership with Kenny Dalglish.

Rush spent seven years in his first stint at Merseyside, before he eventually moved to Juventus in 1986, breaking the British transfer record in the process. He was still with the Italian giants in 1988 when then-Gers manager Graeme Souness came calling, with The Scottish Sun’s Scott MacArthur revealing that his former teammate Dalglish brought him back to Anfield just days after the phone call with Souness.

He told The Daily Mail, via The Scottish Sun: “If Kenny hadn’t called a few days later, I would have been at Rangers with Souey. In the end, I went to Liverpool because I knew I was going back home.

“I’d gone to Italy and realised the grass isn’t always greener on the other side. I knew the club at Liverpool and knew exactly what to expect there.”

All signs seemed to be pointing in the right direction before Dalglish swooped in for the kill. Had it not been for the former Celtic striker , Rush may very well have become a club legend at the Ibrox outfit. Without wanting to rub salt in the wound, he would end up winning another league title, FA Cup and League cup during his second spell with Liverpool. Who knows what he might have achieved with Rangers, but he almost certainly would have scored goals galore.

It just wasn’t meant to be, was it? The Welshman had the chance to don the light blue. Instead, he will forever be known for his time with the Reds. One thing’s for sure, it’s one of those transfers that you can only wish had happened.

Leeds academy reject James Tavernier has thrived since 2008 exit

Leeds United’s decision to release James Tavernier from their academy set-up in 2008 has turned out to be an absolutely mindless piece of business from former chairman Ken Bates.

The 6-foot right-back failed to impress having been picked up from local non-league outfit Farsley Celtic in 2001 as a midfielder, but after six seasons in Yorkshire, he was free to leave for Newcastle United.

After six loan spells away from the Magpies, Tavernier joined Wigan Athletic before Scottish Premiership giants Rangers took a punt on him in 2015.

But how has he fared since?

Where is Tavernier now?

Well as captain of the Teddy Bears, he’s done rather well for himself. It would’ve been easy to fall out of the game following rejection so early on in his career, but instead, he will have used it as motivation to make a mockery of Bates’ decision.

In the senior game, the 29-year-old valued at £4.5m has directly contributed to 152 goals in 362 appearances, via Transfermarkt, which is quite outrageous considering he’s now a right-back.

Tavernier has also played 42 times in the Europa League, so you could call him a regular in the competition – it’s certainly more European matches than what Elland Road has witnessed in the past decade, that’s for sure.

His performances north of the border have often led to suggestions of a return to the Premier League.

According to the Daily Record, he’s been on the radar of West Ham in the last two windows alone whilst Newcastle have also been linked with bringing him back to the club.

Scottish journalist Scott McDermott once claimed that the Gers shouldn’t entertain bids unless they were around £15m – so you can only imagine what his worth would be if he stayed at Leeds and made it to the top with them.

The former Thorp Arch graduate is so important to Steven Gerrard, lauding his consistency as “outrageous” to Rangers TV as well as dubbing him a “powerhouse.”

Leeds got this one badly wrong, but at least they now have Luke Ayling in the role otherwise the club really would have egg on their face.

Letting Marko Grujic leave on loan may have been a blunder by Michael Edwards

For a man who is so often praised for his shrewd business in the transfer market for Liverpool, it looks as if Michael Edwards may have made a big mistake when allowing Marko Grujic to leave on loan.

The Serbian midfielder returned from two seasons on loan at Hertha Berlin this summer and looked to be establishing himself as a part of Jurgen Klopp’s first-team squad, playing 90 minutes in Liverpool’s League Cup ties against Arsenal and Lincoln City respectively (per WhoScored).

However, the 24-year-old, whose asking price was reportedly £20m in the previous window, was allowed to join FC Porto on loan during the summer transfer window and he has gone on to make four appearances for Sérgio Conceição’s side so far this season.

Unfortunately for Liverpool, they have since lost Fabinho to injury, and look to be lacking natural defensive-midfielders in their squad.

Grujic has played as a defensive-midfielder on 25 occasions in his career thus far and could’ve been the man to replace Fabinho in Klopp’s starting XI following his injury.

Even if he wasn’t considered ready to start regularly for Liverpool, he could’ve provided some much-needed squad depth in midfield, with the likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Thiago having also struggled with injuries so far this season.

As we approach a busy Christmas period, you imagine that they won’t be the last players to pick up injuries in Klopp’s side and therefore they could have done with someone such as Grujic to be available as a fairly-experienced back-up.

The Reds have coped reasonably well with their injury concerns this season, as they sit third in the Premier League table going into the international break, however, they did lose Trent Alexander-Arnold to a muscle injury in the recent 1-1 draw with Manchester City.

His former coach Pal Dardai was certainly full of praise for Grujic during his time in Germany, saying:

“I’ve been at Hertha for 22 years, this isn’t meant as an insult to anyone else, but Marko is by far the best midfielder I’ve seen in my time at the club.

“I was a defensive-midfielder and managed to score 17 goals, which isn’t bad, but Marko carries much more of a goal threat, he’s got a sensational shot on him and is much better than I was… he can play anywhere in midfield.

“He’s got so much potential, and you can see that out on the pitch. He’s so robust in the middle of the park, but he can still play. He’s good in the air, he wins tackles and has got such a strong desire to win. I can only say: ‘respect’. He’s not even fully fit. Just imagine what he’ll be like when he is!”

It will be interesting to see if Liverpool consider recalling Grujic in January if their injury problems do not improve, as the Serbian international could definitely prove to be a strong back-up option for the Merseyside club when you consider his performances with Hertha Berlin in the Bundesliga over the last two seasons, which were clearly enough to impress Dardai.

Ruben Dias’ Kompany-esque display will have Pep Guardiola delighted

Ruben Dias produced a match-winning performance for Portugal in their 3-2 win against Croatia on Tuesday night, as he scored a brace to earn Fernando Santos’ side the victory.

The Manchester City man showed a striker’s instinct, much like teammate Sergio Aguero, to score his first goal for his country, as he stabbed home Ruben Semedo’s cut-back, before securing the win for Portugal by capitalising on a huge error by the Croatia goalkeeper in the dying moments.

Since joining from Benfica in the summer transfer window for a fee of £61.2 million, the 23-year-old has gone on to make five appearances for the Citizens in the Premier League, averaging a solid 6.81 rating (per WhoScored).

He has also impressed in his two Champions League appearances thus far, averaging a 6.98 rating for his performances in that competition.

Guardiola will no doubt be delighted with the centre-back’s impressive performance in the win against Croatia, as he picked up an 8.7 rating from SofaScore, which was enough to see him rated as the man-of-the-match.

His two goals from centre-back will perhaps remind some City fans for Vincent Kompany, with the Belgian having picked up a reputation during his time with the club for scoring important goals, just as Dias did on Tuesday night.

It was not just his offensive play that caught the eye, however, as he also enjoyed a pass accuracy rate of 87% and lost possession just eight times, highlighting his ability on the ball.

The centre-back was rarely bested during the game in Split, as he won 100% of his aerial duels during the game, and wasn’t dribbled past by any of the Croatia players.

So it was an all-round dominant display from the £45 million-rated man, which had shades of Kompany’s best performances in a City shirt, and Guardiola will now be hoping that the young defender can produce displays similar to that when he returns to the Manchester club following the international break.

Dias may have to be at his best in City’s next fixture, as they face a tricky trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to face Jose Mourinho’s side this weekend.

Alex Iwobi axed, Niels Nkounkou returns: Predicted Everton XI vs Burnley

Everton have no new injuries ahead of visiting Burnley in Saturday’s lunchtime Premier League kick-off, but Carlo Ancelotti must make two changes against Sean Dyche’s side at Turf Moor.

The Toffees travel to Lancashire striving to bounce back from a 1-0 loss at home to Championship title-holders Leeds United last time out, as their torrid run of form continued with just one win in their last six top-flight fixtures.

But Everton could still move back within the top-four places with a win over Burnley, who have won just once all season and sit above basement boys Sheffield United with the division’s third-worst defensive record having conceded 17 times in nine games.

Ancelotti will be eager to see his side deal further damage to the Clarets’ record this weekend and has confirmed Seamus Coleman and Lucas Digne are his only absentees through injury.

But, if the Italian is to win at a ground the Blues have only won at twice in their last 10 visits, he will have to make changes. So, with that in mind, here’s a predicted line-up the Toffees could name at Turf Moor on Saturday…

Despite conceding the game-winning goal when Raphinha let rip from range, goalkeeper Jordan Pickford enjoyed a strong performance at home to Leeds last time out with five saves, one high claim, a 100% runs out success rate and 13 accurate long balls, per SofaScore.

Pickford’s display between the posts saw him lauded by Aston Villa hero Gabby Agbonlahor, who praised the England international’s “strong personality” for not allowing the relentless criticism following his collision with Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk to affect his performances.

Everton have not kept a clean sheet in the Premier League since the opening day of the season when Ancelotti oversaw a 1-0 win over table-toppers Tottenham Hotspur, while allowing six goals in their last three games, meaning the pressure will be on Pickford to deliver again if he wishes to avoid being benched for AS Roma loanee Robin Olsen.

Ancelotti, meanwhile, will be expected to name an unchanged central defensive pairing of Mason Holgate, Michael Keane and Ben Godfrey at Burnley with the trio recording five, six and four clearances respectively against Leeds, while blocking one, two and two shots and recording two, two and one interceptions, per SofaScore.

Holgate was also the only one of Everton’s defenders to be dribbled past by a Whites player, while Godfrey won all five of his duels.

Ancelotti faces a selection headache at full-back, however, with Coleman and Digne still out, having struggled to see Tom Davies and Alex Iwobi impress against Leeds when fielded in unfamiliar surroundings.

Iwobi lost possession nine times, won just one duel, misplaced each of his two crosses, failed to register a shot on goal and offered one tackle before being replaced in the 67th-minute, per SofaScore, while Davies struggled on the opposing side with two tackles and 11 accurate passes before his early exit despite creating a big chance to score.

Niels Nkounkou, who his agent Yvan Le Mee describes as a “strong, powerful, technical and very fast” defender, should expect to start in place of Iwobi at Burnley after Ancelotti discussed the Frenchman’s omission from the squad to face Leeds.

“Nkounkou was not in the squad because I have 11 players, I decided to put Iwobi on the left. The squad is really big,” the Italian said, via quotes by the Liverpool Echo. “He’s still young, he needs more experience, he needs to work more. But I am honestly satisfied for what he is doing. He will have time in the next game because we have a lot of games.”

Ancelotti awarded Nkounkou his Premier League debut at Newcastle United last month, while favouring the 20-year-old in all three of Everton’s Carabao Cup fixtures thus far this season.

Ancelotti faces more debate over who starts at right-back, having so far only trusted Jonjoe Kenny with playing 77 minutes in the Premier League since his return from a season-long loan with Bundesliga side FC Schalke 04.

But the Italian tactician faces less question marks over his midfield and offensive options with Dominic Calvert-Lewin the top-flight’s top goalscorer with 10 to his name, while James Rodriguez ranks third for big chances created (six) and fourth for key passes (24), per SofaScore.

Summer signing Allan also ranks second only to Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish (83) for ground duels won (64) by any Premier League player thus far this term, and Richarlison registers the seventh-most successful dribbles per game (2.57) despite missing three fixtures through suspension.

Sunderland must offer Elliott Embleton new deal or risk Maja 2.0

Sunderland could be heading for an all too familiar mistake…

What’s the word?

The Black Cats have several members of the first-team squad out of contract in the summer, ranging from veteran trio Aiden McGeady, Grant Leadbitter and Danny Graham to some emerging young hopefuls like Jack Diamond and Denver Hume.

One name that falls into the latter category is Elliott Embleton. The 21-year-old midfielder has been out for much of the season through injury but did appear against Burton Albion prior to Phil Parkinson’s sacking.

He also impressed in an EFL Trophy outing at Fleetwood Town with some reports suggesting that he was the ‘creative spark’ that they had been lacking.

Maja 2.0?

Indeed, it’s going to be very important to tie him to a new deal, something that the north-east giants have never really got right. The fact that he’s been allowed to enter the final six to seven months of his deal speaks volumes.

The Stadium of Light could soon see another Josh Maja situation should they not resolve it in due course.

Embleton is one of the more promising players to come through the Academy of Light, picking up ten caps for the England U20 squad whilst he impressed at Grimbsy Town on loan too.

Then-Black Cats boss Jack Ross lauded his young midfielder at the time, he said:

“Embleton has been terrific since he came back for pre-season. You can see what he can provide in the final third, so I was pleased with that.”

Even Parkinson lauded Embleton in pre-season, dubbing him the “standout” from their victory over Gateshead.

He is very much highly-rated in Tyne and Wear, so he really does deserve to be offered new terms and we’ve already seen with Johnson this week that he isn’t afraid to hand the reins to youth when the time is right after starting Diamond in midweek.

If there’s anything to come from this new era, then Sunderland have to start keeping hold of their youth.
