Klopp’s options for this source of growing Liverpool concern

Simon Mignolet. Mention the name to Liverpool fans and many will shudder with memories of mistakes that have cost their side dearly since his 2013 arrival from Sunderland.

The Belgian travelled to Anfield with a reputation as one of the Premier League’s top stoppers, but is appears that the step up has been too great for him so far, and it seems that he’ll never truly be able to win over the Merseyside crowd, or even his own defenders.

A sloppy save from a Scott Dann header allowed the Crystal Palace man to have a second attempt, which he dispatched, during Sunday’s loss at the hands of the Eagles, eroding what was, on the whole, a decent performance from the Reds.

Those who defend Mignolet point to his shot-stopping ability – granted he is good in that respect – but an inability to command his area and shaky distribution do nothing to inspire confidence in his centre-backs, and it cannot be any coincidence that the Liverpool have such a poor record in terms of conceding from set-pieces.

Despite Jurgen Klopp’s persistent quotes suggesting he has no desire to make wholesale changes in January, he’s sure to be aware of the problems Mignolet is creating for him.

And with that in mind, here are FIVE options for the German to draft in this January…

Bernd Leno

With Klopp a Bundesliga connoisseur, he’s sure to be aware of Leno’s reputation and potential.

The 23-year-old has been earning rave reviews for his performances within German football for some time and is now a part of his nation’s set-up, which is no mean feat considering the level of competition for that particular spot in the world champions’ ranks.

Only Manuel Neuer kept more clean sheets (20) than Leno’s 16 in the German top tier last season, while his 97% success rate in terms of claiming the ball in the air ranked among the best regulars in the division.

Ron-Robert Zieler

Despite his Manchester United links, we’re sure Liverpool fans would be all too happy to see Zieler between the sticks at Anfield.

The now 26-year-old failed to make the grade at Old Trafford, but has since thrived back in his German homeland with Hannover 96, which has been enough to earn him six international caps in a period in which Neuer has cemented himself as the planet’s premier glovesman.

A 99% success rate when it comes to claiming aerial balls is simply staggering (the best among the regular No.1’s in Bundesliga action last term), and is sure to appeal to Klopp.

Encouragingly he’s among the better performing stoppers in the division this term too, despite Hannover’s poor form (they sit way down in 15th) over their first 12 league matches of the season.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen

An ambitious target, but a reported target nonetheless, Barcelona’s Ter Stegen would add the sort of quality between the sticks that Liverpool have been lacking since the days of Pepe Reina.

Bizarrely for a player of such quality, the 23-year-old’s role at the Nou Camp since his move in the summer of 2014 from Borussia Monchengladbach has been diluted, with the presence of Claudio Bravo having limited him to cup showings across his debut campaign.

Champions League action made up the bulk of his minutes, and with Barca going on to win the competition there’s little arguing with his ability.

Not dissimilar to his countryman Neuer, Ter Stegen is a progressive ‘last line of defence’, with his desire to play on the front foot in a sweeper role akin with a modern approach, while his 6ft. 2” frame makes the youngster a commanding and authoritative presence.

Victor Valdes

Okay, no player has moved between Manchester United and Liverpool since Phil Chisnall way back in 1964 for a whopping £25,000, but Valdes’ current situation leaves the door ajar for a shock journey along the M62, and links are there.

The 33-year-old is currently in exile at Carrington after falling out with Louis van Gaal amid claims from the Dutchman that the stopper refused to play for the club’s U-21’s as he attempted to regain fitness.

Admittedly we don’t have much to go on in terms of his performances in the English game (he made two appearances at the back end of last term in place of the, at the time, injured David de Gea), but his record at Barcelona is mightily encouraging as he was present through the club’s rise to become Europe’s dominant force through the late 2000s and early 2010s.

Anthony Lopes

A slight curveball option here, Lopes may be a player worth looking at. The Frenchman has been, arguably, the top performing glovesman across Europe’s top five divisions so far this term with Lyon, with his agility and reflexes contributing to his nine clean sheets in 13 Ligue 1 matches.

Although his strengths are somewhat similar to those of Mignolet, Lopes is, perhaps, an upgrade on the Belgian, and is rather less erratic in his approach.

Nethula, Ferguson help Auckland finish second

A round-up of the Plunket Shield matches that ended on April 4, 2015

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Apr-2015Four-wicket hauls from Tarun Nethula and Lachie Ferguson, who picked up a five-for in the previous game, set up Auckland’s six-wicket win over Otago, enabling them to finish second on the points table.Half-centuries from Michael Guptill-Bunce and Jeet Raval ensured that a relatively small chase of 187 didn’t prove tricky after Otago were restricted to 143.Guptill-Bunce (91 off 99 balls) and Raval (63), scoring their second fifties off the match, knocked 91 runs off the target by stumps on the third day, and proceeded to add 69 more runs the following morning. Both batsmen were then dismissed in the space of four deliveries, and Auckland went on to lose Carl Cachopa and Robert O’Donnell for the addition of only six runs, offspinner Josh Finnie accounting for three off the four wickets. But that would only prove to be a minor blip, as Anaru Kitchen and Donovan Grobbelaar polished off the remaining runs.In their first innings, though, Otago had produced an impressive batting performance after being inserted. Despite not having the best of starts – the visitors were 37 for 2 and 102 for 4 at different stages – Otago’s middle-order strung together some meaty scores. While Derek de Boorder (78), who scored an unbeaten fifty in the last game, and Michael Bracewell (62) were the top-scorers, each of Otago’s batsmen save for Finne entered double figures. At 224 for 7, Otago again dug themselves out of trouble, with de Boorder and Craig Smith (42 off 57 balls) putting on 77 runs. There was also a 63-run partnership for the last wicket between Rhys Phillips (23*) and Jacob Duffy (37).Guptill-Bunce (88) and Raval (52) set the tone for Auckland’s response, contributing 89 runs for the opening wicket. The home team’s innings unfolded in a similar manner to that of Otago’s, as they found themselves on 255 for 7 and required a 66-run alliance between captain Michael Bates and Kitchen, who smashed a 49-ball 64. Auckland nevertheless were in deficit of 43 runs when they were bowled out.Central Districts secured six points in a drawn encounter with Wellington in Napier, but it wasn’t enough to avoid the last place on the standings.Wellington had a slim chance of winning the title going into the game. Needing an outright win and as many bonus points as they could muster, they started poorly, folding for 227 on the opening day after being sent in.Central Districts, driven by fifties from Will Young (78), Greg Hay (51) and Ben Wheeler (55*), secured a 128-run lead. Wheeler, who had picked up three wickets as well, stretched his team’s lead by adding 55 runs for the last wicket with Andrew Mathieson.Wellington’s batting was markedly better in their second dig as Stephen Murdoch (112 off 147 balls) found support from fifties from captain Michael Papps (82), Michael Pollard and Luke Woodcock. They set Central Districts a target of 312 after declaring on 439 for 7. Central Districts didn’t play ball, batting out 37 overs to score 86 for 1.

Fletcher, bowlers help WI draw level

Following their demoralising Test series defeat, West Indies found solace in the format they relish the most by squaring the T20s 1-1 with an all-round performance in Roseau

The Report by Kanishkaa Balachandran06-Jul-2014
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsThe stand of 66 between Andre Fletcher and Lendl Simmons set up West Indies’ victory•WICB

Following their demoralising Test series defeat, West Indies found solace in the format they relish the most by squaring the T20s 1-1 with an all-round performance in Roseau. West Indies were guilty of not putting enough runs on the board on Saturday, but they addressed that issue by posting a competitive 165 in an uninterrupted innings. Their bowlers choked New Zealand, with the spinners and medium-pacers proving difficult to hit. Never at any stage did New Zealand pose a threat and the lack of lasting partnerships led to their downfall.Unlike on Saturday, when West Indies struggled to gain traction either side of a rain interruption, the batsmen found momentum via a solid second-wicket of stand of 66 between Andre Fletcher and Lendl Simmons and in the last five overs, when 56 were scored. Simmons described the pitch as one with tennis-ball bounce, with a few balls stopping on the batsmen, but West Indies saw through an edgy beginning and ensured they kept wickets intact for a late surge.Fletcher was lucky to survive early in his innings when he set off for a single from the non-striker’s end and was sent back by Simmons; Fletcher had given up but the bowler Trent Boult missed the mark. After that, Fletcher charged down the track to the seamers and targeted the straighter boundaries Simmons regularly shuffled across his stumps to target fine leg and third man.Given how the batsmen struggled on Saturday, the pair showed greater intent to get on with it. Simmons moved across his stumps to Corey Anderson and scooped it for six over fine leg and in the same over, played a glorious extra cover drive. Anderson had the last laugh against Simmons when he caught him at long-on. Anderson caught the ball and threw it up as he back-pedalled outside the boundary but managed to jog back in and take it on the second attempt.Boult came up with a more spectacular effort later in the innings when he had Pollard caught at deep midwicket. He plucked it one-handed, threw it up and caught the ball again with a full-length dive from outside the boundary. Those two postcard moments were the only takeaways for New Zealand in the match. Their slower bowlers, Ish Sodhi and Kane Williamson couldn’t impose themselves in the manner in which Samuel Badree and Sunil Narine managed later on.In the first ODI, West Indies managed only a paltry 6.80 in the last five overs but a day later, they cranked it up to 11.20. Fletcher sped towards his third T20 fifty with a scooped six over long-off. He was yorked by Boult for 62 but his exit didn’t slow down West Indies as Darren Sammy and Andre Russell took the score past 160.New Zealand decided to rotate the captaincy by putting Williamson in charge and although he top-scored, he failed to anchor the innings. Brendon McCullum swung his bat around but his soft dismissal increased the pressure on Williamson. New Zealand’s other power hitters, Jimmy Neesham and Anderson didn’t make an impact. Narine and Badree applied the stranglehold by not going for more than five an over.New Zealand needed a massive 91 off the last ten but even at that stage, they still had three more Narine overs to contend with. They also had the awkward slower balls from Pollard to negotiate, and with every desperate swing and a miss from the middle and lower order, the asking rate climbed. Sheldon Cottrell, brought in for this game, got the in-form Neesham early to give West Indies the first advantage and there was no looking back.
