Eagles and Rhinos into final

In a low-scoring thriller Mashonaland Eagles held their nerve to secure a place in the Stanic Bank 20 final with a one-wicket victory against Matabeleland Tuskers. Their last-wicket pair of Ray Price and Doug Hondo came together with six still required, despite the target being just 71, and edged their side home with nine balls to spare. The Eagles bowlers had done their job by skittling Tuskers for 70, but it soon became clear the chase wasn’t going to be easy. Keegan Meth and Chris Mpofu took two wickets apiece as the Eagles fell to 11 for 4 in the fifth over and between them their eight overs cost 18 runs. Ryan ten Doeschate held the innings together with 26 off 47 balls – more 50-over than 20-over pace – but when he fell 13 and Greg Lamb followed for a duck it was a nerve-jangling conclusion.Hondo and Andrew Hall earlier shared six wickets and none of the Eagles bowlers conceded more than 17 in their spells. Sharp fielding also contributed three run outs while Neil Carter, who normally scores at more than a run-a-ball, top-scored with 25 off 33 balls but Tuskers’ paltry total almost proved enough.Lou Vincent and Vusi Sibanda combined in a commanding partnership of 139 in 16 overs to guide Mid West Rhinos into the final with an eight-wicket victory against Southern Rocks. The third-wicket pair ensured the early loss of both openers didn’t become a major problem as they knocked off the 152-run target with ease. Sibanda cracked five sixes in his 60 while Vincent cleared the ropes twice as he hit an unbeaten 75 off 55 balls.Tatenda Taibu, the Rocks captain, enabled his team to post a decent total with a controlled 57 as the rest of the top order failed to shine. Wickets fell steadily with Brendan Taylor’s part-time offspin proving particularly effective as he claimed 2 for 17 in four overs. Steve Tikolo provided some late impetus with a brisk 27, but in the end the total wasn’t anywhere near being a challenge.

Spurs: Paratici submits Yilmaz offer

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in a deal to bring Ridvan Yilmaz to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Turkish media outlet Turkiye Gazetesi (via Sport Witness), who claim that Fabio Paratici has submitted an €8m (£6.75m) offer for the Besiktas left-back, with the player himself thought to be extremely keen on a move to the Premier League side.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-levy-conte-paratici-thfc” title= “Read the latest Spurs news!”]

The report goes on to state that the 20-year-old has asked his current team not to stand in the way of his proposed switch to Spurs, however, it is believed that the Super Lig outfit are hoping to receive an offer closer to €10m (£8.5m) before sanctioning the Turkey international’s sale this summer.

There’s no one “identical to him”

Considering how impressive Yilmaz has been since breaking into the Besiktas first team as a 17-year-old back in 2019, coupled with the fact that left wing-back has been something of a problem position for Antonio Conte this season, it is easy to see why Spurs would be interested in a move for the defender this summer.

Indeed, over his 25 Super Lig appearances this season, the £4.95m-rated full-back has been a constant threat for Valerien Ismael’s side, scoring three goals, registering four assists and creating five big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 0.8 shots and making 0.8 key passes per game.

The £3k-per-week dynamo has also impressed in metrics more typical of his position, helping Besiktas keep four clean sheets, in addition to making an average of 1.3 interceptions, 1.7 tackles, 1.2 clearances and winning 3.9 duels – at a success rate of 56% – per fixture.

These returns have seen the player about whom was it was claimed in comments made to Breaking The Lines that “there isn’t really a well-known full-back that’s identical to him” average a SofaScore match rating of 6.89, ranking him as his club’s ninth-best player in the top flight of Turkish football.

And, with recent reports suggesting that Sergio Reguilon could be on his way out of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer, as well as Ryan Sessegnon continuing to struggle with injuries, the signing of a new left-back could very much be one of Paratici’s priorities ahead of 2022/23.

As such, considering his tender age, undoubted ability and huge potential – not to mention his extremely reasonable asking price – it would indeed appear as if landing Yilmaz this summer would be a fantastic piece of business for the Tottenham sporting director to get over the line – as the 20-year-old’s unique abilities would certainly be put to extremely good use in Conte’s left wing-back role next season.

Anderson's blue-sky thinking

James Anderson believes that his final-day showing at The Oval, in which he produced a fast and threatening display under cloudless skies and with a 25-over old ball, will help to convince the doubters that he has what it takes to succeed in adverse conditions in Australia this winter. Although England went on to lose the match by four wickets, Anderson’s tenacity in defending a meagre target of 148 was particularly timely as the team’s thoughts begin to turn to the Ashes in November.Anderson, 28, has been the pick of England’s bowlers this summer, claiming 29 wickets in five Tests against Bangladesh and Pakistan, including a career-best haul of 11 for 71 in the first Test against Pakistan at Trent Bridge last month. But whereas his prodigious ability to make the ball swing has been assisted by overcast conditions for much of the summer, it wasn’t until the sun came out at The Oval that he was forced to rely on his less celebrated traits of stamina and accuracy. In tandem with Graeme Swann, England made Pakistan battle for every run as they stretched a seemingly routine run-chase well into the afternoon session.”There was a period there when they were on 16 to win for quite a few overs, and we all believed we could cause an upset,” Anderson told Cricinfo’s Switch Hit podcast. “Unfortunately it didn’t happen for us, but we gave it everything we could that day, and to be honest we probably didn’t have enough runs to defend. But I’m delighted with the way it’s gone for me this summer. I’ve made use of some helpful conditions along the way, but also when the ball hasn’t been swinging, like at The Oval, I’ve still done quite well.”Andrew Strauss’s tactics in that final innings came under some fire as Anderson was initially asked to bowl in the channel outside off stump to stymie Pakistan’s flow of runs. But a magnificent outswinging yorker to the well-set Mohammad Yousuf signalled a change of emphasis, and also highlighted Anderson’s greater reliability as an attacking bowler who can also be trusted to keep a cap on the scoring rate – as demonstrated by a current series economy rate of 2.30, the lowest of any of the specialist quick bowlers on either side.Anderson attributes that greater reliability to two factors – an increased sense of responsibility within the bowling unit, a process that began back at Wellington in March 2008 when he took over from Matthew Hoggard as the leader of England’s attack, and a return to the idiosyncratic, but undeniably effective, bowling action that served him so well as a rookie swing bowler at the start of his international career, but which was more or less coached out of him during his years in the wilderness between 2004 and 2006.”Keeping the ball pitched up, and obviously straight, is a basic of bowling, but it’s obviously a key thing for anyone who plays cricket,” said Anderson. “I’m really trying to get rid of any free scoring shots for the batsman, especially that one four-ball in an over, and in the last few years, certainly since Peter Moores took over the job of England coach, he instilled a lot of confidence in me and gave me some extra responsibility.”Since I suffered a stress fracture in 2006, I went back to near enough the action I started with as a 16 year old,” he added. “I think from then, I’ve gone on from strength to strength. My bowling’s improved, and is continually improving, and I’ve started to become a bit more consistent which is what I’ve been searching for for a number of years, and which every bowler strives for. I’m just really enjoying playing at the moment, I feel pretty confident with it, and the main thing for me at the minute is staying fit, keeping strong and bowling well.”The doubts will continue to linger, however, until Anderson produces a similarly reliable display in Australia this winter, a country in which he claimed five wickets at a costly 82.60 in the 2006-07 Ashes. Under the guidance of their new bowling coach, David Saker, whose greatest emphasis is on tactics rather than techniques, England have already begun practising with a Kookaburra ball to attune themselves mentally to the task that awaits them this winter, but Anderson is adamant that the challenge should not be overstated.”I’ve bowled six balls this summer with a Kookaburra, just to see how it held up in English conditions, nothing more than that,” he said. “We’ve gone to plenty other countries in the past and won using the Kookaburra so it’s not a big deal, and not something we’re going to worry about. I’ve bowled well in plenty of games where the ball hasn’t swung – it’s just a matter of doing it on a consistent basis to prove to people that I can do it. I know I can do it, but I’ve just got to become consistent.”James Anderson works with ASICS Smarter Cricket. For expert coaching videos visit www.asics.co.uk/cricket

CPFC in last minute move for Nketiah

Crystal Palace have not made any signings to improve their squad over the January transfer window, but they could still be in a position to do some business this month with just under a week to go.

It has now been revealed that they could make a last attempt to sign a player they have been strongly linked to.

What’s the word?

Journalist, Sami Mokbel, believes that there is still a chance that Arsenal forward Eddie Nketiah could become a Crystal Palace player.

Mokbel told GIVEMESPORT:

“Yes, they’re keen on signing Eddie Nketiah, for sure. It’s a deal Palace are definitely interested in.”

Crystal Palace have been linked to the Gunners star for months, with rumours circulating that the move could happen this month, but nothing yet has materialised, especially since Mikel Arteta spoke out to quash the chances by claiming that Nketiah would stay at the club.

However, his contract ends at the North London club this summer.

A perfect fit

The 22-year-old striker was named as a player the club has been interested in “for a number of years let alone months” by Roy Hodgson earlier this month, and it’s not hard to see why he continues to be touted with a move across London.

That’s thanks to Patrick Vieira’s progress in developing younger players, something we have already seen this season with the likes of Conor Gallagher and Odsonne Edouard thriving under the Frenchman.

Gallagher has already been involved in ten Premier League goals this term while Edouard has nine involvements himself.

Thus, Nketiah is the perfect fit for Vieira’s youth revolution that he began in the summer transfer window by bringing in a number of younger players to fill positions in the team, and the additions have proven to make a positive impact on the side.

However, when you look at Palace’s season so far they have gained over almost as many draws as they have wins, so adding a striker with potential who can add goals to inspire more victories for the side could make a real difference in their pursuit of another top half finish this season.

The £9m-rated forward, Nketiah, who has scored five goals in 11 appearances, could be the answer.

The Eagles have lost three of their last five Premier League games, and Vieira will surely be hoping that the club can come back after the winter break and get back to consistent form by securing more points and climbing the table during the last few months of the season.

Wolves reject Spurs’ £15m bid for Traore

Wolves have rejected Tottenham’s £15million bid for Adama Traore, according to reliable journalist John Percy.

The Lowdown: Constant Traore exit rumour

The 25-year-old has been continually linked with an exit from Molineux in recent weeks, whether it be for the January transfer window or this summer.

Bruno Lage seemingly doesn’t see Traore as part of his plans moving forward, with some reports even suggesting the manager has green-lighted an exit, so it feels inevitable that he will leave the club in the near future.

Spurs are clearly the front-runners to snap up the Spaniard and a key update has now emerged regarding their pursuit of him.

The Latest: Wolves turn down £15m bid

According to The Telegraph‘s Percy, Wolves have turned down a £15million bid for Traore from the north Londoners, as the journalist claimed it is “becoming a bit of a saga” on Twitter.

Wanderers value the wide man at £20million and won’t budge until that amount is met.

The Verdict: Up the offer, Spurs

Spurs know what they have to do in order to get their man and it would benefit all parties if they simply up their offer and get a deal completed.

Traore himself is likely to jump at the chance of a fresh challenge – he has only managed ten starts in the Premier League this season – and Wolves can hopefully then use the money on a new signing this month.

While the Spain international has done good things in a Wolves shirt, his tendency to flatter to deceive means it is time for him to move on, with just 11 goals to his name in 153 appearances for the club.

West Ham battling Southampton for Armando Broja

West Ham United are now battling Southampton to sign Chelsea loanee Armando Broja according to reports.

What’s the story?

The Hammers have yet to make any marquee additions in this January transfer window, and David Moyes will be keen to ensure that his side can get some business done before the deadline next week.

Now, according to Goal, it’s been suggested that the London club are thought to be one of a number of clubs who have made their interest known in Broja, amid claims that Southampton are keen to sign him on a permanent basis.

Proving his Premier League quality

The 20-year-old has been in fine form for the Saints since his loan switch from Stamford Bridge, netting seven goals in 21 games across all competitions and proving he belongs at this level.

Standing at an imposing 6 foot 3, it’s no surprise that Broja uses his physicality to his advantage, much like Sebastien Haller was thought to bring when he was at the London Stadium.

As per Sofascore, he wins an impressive 4.9 duels per game, which is only a touch less than what Haller has managed in the Eredivisie with Ajax this season.

Broja also wins a quite similar amount of headers as the Ivorian (2.7 to 3.4), while he’s also slightly more clinical than the former Hammers man – this campaign has seen his goal conversation rate stand at 22% compared to Haller’s 20%.

CIES value him at the €40m (£34m) mark, which is unsurprising given his age and the fact he’s now doing the business in the Premier League, but he appears to be a real threat in this division.

Speaking after the Saints beat Brentford 4-1, Ralph Hasenhuttl said: “He’s a great threat. He didn’t have many poor games this season so today he showed again how dangerous he can be for the opponent and he’s very helpful for our game.”

If the Hammers can somehow manage to land him ahead of Southampton where he’s currently on loan at, it would be a major coup for Moyes’ side.

Meanwhile, West Ham have made their “first offer” for this Ligue 1 striker…

Van Bronckhorst must axe Morelos vs Lyon

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s Glasgow Rangers head into Thursday evening’s Europa League tie safe in the knowledge that they have already secured a place for the Ibrox side in the knockout stages of the competition.

As such, with nothing at stake aside from pride, the fixture against Olympique Lyonnais presents the 46-year-old Gers manager with a perfect opportunity to heavily rotate his side, allowing a number of his peripheral squad members some much-needed game time.

Subsequently, this means that a plethora of Rangers’ regular starters must make way, with centre-forward Alfredo Morelos appearing to be a prime candidate for the chop on Thursday evening.

Van Bronckhorst must axe Morelos

Since making the move to Ibrox back in 2017, Morelos has gone on to become an incredibly important part of the Rangers first-team setup, scoring a highly impressive 104 goals and registering 46 assists over his 207 appearances for the club.

This season has been no different, with the £10.8m-rated striker having already bagged five goals, provided three assists and created two big chances over his 14 Premiership appearances, as well as taking an average of 4.1 shots – the highest number of any player in the top flight – and making 1.6 key passes per game.

These returns have seen the 25-year-old who Willy Irwin dubbed an “incredible” talent average a SofaScore match rating of 7.14, ranking him as Gers’ sixth-best performer in the league.

It has been a similar case over the Colombia international’s five outings in the Europa League this term, with the £33k-per-week hitman notching two goals and averaging a SofaScore match rating of 7.16, ranking him as his side’s second-best player in Europe.

However, it is exactly because of Morelos’ fine form that Van Bronckhorst must ruthlessly axe the centre-forward against Lyon.

With the striker being just one yellow card away from suspension in the Europa League, it is not worth running the risk of fielding the player who the Dutch manager claimed can always “create danger” in the dead rubber on Thursday, as he could subsequently miss the much more important first-leg of Rangers’ knockout tie next February.
