Burnley: Clarets keen on loan move for Ryan Sessegnon

Burnley are reportedly keen on a loan move for Tottenham youngster Ryan Sessegnon, although they face competition from two other Premier League clubs.

The Telegraph reported that the Clarets, along with Southampton and Brighton, are interested in taking the 20-year-old on loan, as he has fallen out of favour under Jose Mourinho at Spurs.

Sessegnon, who is valued at £22.5m by TransferMarkt, joined Tottenham from Fulham in 2019 but has struggled for game-time in north London, making just 12 appearances for Spurs and yet to feature for them so far this season.

However, the left-sided utility player, who is equally capable of operating in defence or midfield and can even be deployed as a wide attacker (as per TransferMarkt), has been hailed as “brilliant” and “unselfish” by Tottenham team-mate Danny Rose, who also described him as a “down to earth” individual (as per Evening Standard).

Sessegnon’s ability to play at left-back could provide stiff competition for Charlie Taylor and Erik Pieters at Burnley; and if Sean Dyche sees him as more of a midfield player, he could be vying with Dwight McNeil for a place on the left flank.

While the 20-year-old has struggled to score in the last couple of seasons, his quality in the final third was illustrated by a return of 16 goals in Fulham’s promotion-winning 2017/18 campaign. Also, his passing success rate of 77.4% last season was bettered by only four players at Turf Moor.

Sessegnon may find it challenging to displace McNeil if he comes to Burnley, with the Clarets winger a firm Dyche favourite as he started every Premier League game in 2019/20. However, the Spurs youngster could certainly stake a claim for the left-back slot, where Dyche has alternated near-equally between Taylor and Pieters last season.

The 20-year-old may have fallen out of favour under Mourinho but, with Burnley’s squad among the smallest in the top flight, opportunities could be more abundant for a talented young player at Turf Moor if the Clarets can beat off the competition for his services on loan.

Tottenham Hotspur: Daniel Levy ‘offered’ Almeria striker Darwin Nunez

According to a report from the Evening Standard, Tottenham have been ‘offered’ a chance to sign Almeria striker Darwin Nunez as the club reportedly set their sights on a backup striker to Harry Kane – and chairman Daniel Levy could have to pay just £14m to make it happen.

Nunez, who bagged an impressive 16 goals in the Spanish second division last season (Transfermarkt), has also been linked with other Premier League clubs chasing a forward, including Brighton and Southampton.

Having turned heads with his prolific return on the continent for Almeria over 2019/20, prompting comparisons with Edinson Cavani, clubs could be eyeing bargain swoops like Nunez to cope with financial losses brought upon by the global pandemic.

Spurs fall into this category, having borrowed £175m from the Bank of England in recent months, and Nunez could represent a goalscoring option on the cheap who has bags of potential.

Reaching his first double figures campaign at the tender age of 21, Tottenham could do far worse than Nunez, and Evening Standard journalist Dan Kilpatrick has revealed that the Lilywhites have been ‘offered’ the Uruguayan as a striking option ahead of the new Premier League season.

This comes after a report that chairman Levy is struggling to progress with further deals due to Serge Aurier’s continued presence at the club, with Spurs allegedly wanting to sell him off before concluding any more transfers. So far, AC Milan and Bayer Leverkusen have come knocking, but Levy reportedly won’t accept any bid under £23m – the same figure paid to bring him to north London back in 2017.

Hopefully Tottenham can come to an agreement with Aurier in order to bring in a talented prospect like Nunez.

Man Utd’s Victor Lindelof shouldn’t be let off the hook amid Phil Jones criticism

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

Following the arrival of Harry Maguire for a world-record fee for a defender back in the summer, Manchester United know they have a centre-back who is likely to be amongst the first-names on the team-sheet for a number of years. The real conundrum Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has on his hands, is who he decided to partner the former Leicester star with.

So far this season, that man has been Sweden international Victor Lindelof. The 25-year-old has played 14 times across all competitions, and was once again in the line-up for United’s clash against Sheffield United on Sunday afternoon. The Red Devils came away with a dramatic 3-3 draw at Bramall Lane, and much of the post-match criticism has revolved around Phil Jones’ horror showing.

Martin Keown hammered the England international for his role in the build-up the opening goal, and insisted he “always looked problematic” in the back-line. But whilst the former Blackburn man had a 45 minutes to forget, Lindelof should not be let off the hook for his own dismal display.

Lining up in a back-three, Lindelof was run ragged by the movement of both Lys Mousset and David McGoldrick, constantly having to deal with danger from out wide, rather than in the comfort of the central areas. As per Sofascore, he won just two of his seven aerial duels (three overall) as he also lost the physical battle against Sheffield United’s front two, and his struggles were shown by the fact he completed no tackles whatsoever over the course of the 90 minutes.

And the Swede’s time on the ball was similarly unproductive. Despite boasting 83 touches, he failed to provide a key pass into his midfielders or forwards, something Maguire was able to do. He also lost possession ten times, more than double what Jones managed (4) in his time on the pitch. The latter has been somewhat of a scapegoat, with fans of the Manchester side even criticising his error on Sunday. But whilst the focus has been on him, Lindelof has avoided much of the scrutiny – something that doesn’t make sense given his equally poor performance.

In other news, Manchester United star Marcus Rashford has fired a huge warning to the rest of the Premier League about his own potential.

Sunderland’s Grant Leadbitter has a quality that they’ve missed too often

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

A solid performance against Coventry showed exactly what Grant Leadbitter can bring to Sunderland, particularly as there is an aspect he provides that not many of his teammates can compare to.

On the chalkboard

Phil Parkinson decided to switch things up from the FA Cup exit last week by operating with a 4-3-3 formation, and having two midfielders to play alongside him certainly worked in Leadbitter’s favour.

SofaScore gave him the second-highest rating of any player on the pitch, with 7.5, and the combination of his leadership and quality on the ball meant he was a very effective performer for the Black Cats.

He got on the ball frequently and looked to make things happen for his side with 87% pass accuracy and three successful long balls, thus putting the Black Cats on the front foot in a manner that fans think George Dobson hasn’t been able to. Meanwhile, similar conclusions can be drawn with Max Power too.

Leadbitter was equally impressive in a defensive capacity, too, with two tackles and two interceptions ensuring the Sunderland midfield had some bite to it, and in the process proved his all-round ability could be of very good service to his manager.

Should play more often

Sunderland have a number of experienced players in the first-team but few have years of being a captain under their belt like Leadbitter does.

The 33-year-old captained Middlesbrough to the Premier League only three years ago, and the influence he has on his teammates could be pivotal to maintaining belief and confidence that Sunderland can win points from losing positions.

They managed exactly that against Coventry and it was no coincidence that Leadbitter played the whole match.

Having come through as a professional at the Black Cats there are few players who understand the club and the fans frustrations quite like him, and with Lee Cattermole departing over the summer he now holds even more importance.

[ad_pod ]

In that regard, and considering midfield has been a bit of a weak point this term, Parkinson needs to consider giving Leadbitter a run of games to build his fitness and allow him to stamp his mark of influence on the team.

He will be able to set a standard and if that gets the squad playing closer to its full potential then that can only be a good thing and should lead to an upturn in results.

Leadbitter is not the only midfielder who should be considered more often by Parkinson, read here about why Ethan Robson deserves a bigger role too.

Arsenal could strike a mouth-watering partnership if they sign Erling Haaland

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to The Guardian, Arsenal are said to have sent scouts to watch RB Salzburg’s Erling Haaland in action.

What’s the story?

Although we may be between transfer windows, many clubs are looking at potential signings, and there are few players in European football who are more sought-after than 19-year-old Haaland.

Watch the moment Granit Xhaka’s Arsenal career may have come to an ugly end in the video below…

The Norway international is said to have 20 clubs pursuing him, including the Gunners.

Amongst the other mentioned clubs are Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Manchester City. Salzburg are said to be hoping to earn €60m (£51.6m) in the summer from a player they bought for just €9m (£7.7m).

Match made in heaven

The former Molde striker has burst onto the scene in dramatic fashion so far this term.

In 15 games, he has bagged an astonishing 22 goals, including six in the Champions League despite playing against polished sides such as Liverpool and Napoli. That tally in Europe’s premier club competition makes him the first player in the tournament’s history to score six in his first three matches.

He has achieved these astounding results whilst playing as part of a duo upfront.

In every game so far this campaign, the Austrian outfit have played with two strikers, and they have been incredibly prolific playing with that set-up. Although we are only just in November, Salzburg have scored 75 goals in all competitions. Yes, you read that right: 75 goals.

Arsenal already have their own teenage striker who is grabbing the headlines. Gabriel Martinelli has scored seven goals in just four starts since joining from Ituano in the summer, with Jurgen Klopp even calling him a “talent of the century”.

Should Arsenal be able to beat the intense competition to his signature, there is the potential for Arsenal to have a mouth-watering partnership. And, considering they are both just teenagers, they have plenty of room to develop and improve, which is quite frankly scary.

Of course, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette are currently the two main centre-forwards at the Emirates Stadium, but that will not be the case for too long, one would imagine, given they are 30 and 28 respectively.

Unai Emery has paired them as a duo at times in his tenure in north London but this potential combination has plenty of potential too, especially given the Norway international’s performances when alongside another forward.

Signing Haaland and partnering him with Martinelli could strike fear into Premier League defences for many for years to come.

Nketiah’s Leeds struggle provides a prescient warning to Brewster and Liverpool

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Rhian Brewster is being tracked by three clubs who are seeking a loan deal for the striker, according to the Sun.

What’s the latest?

Crystal Palace are the most high-profile team who are rumoured to be interested in the 19-year-old, and although Jordan Ayew has found some consistency for the Eagles, they lack another striker who is able to deliver on the goal front.

Bristol City and Swansea find are also reportedly monitoring the Liverpool forward and could make a move when the transfer window re-opens.

Watch Liverpool Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Other clubs in Germany could also register an interest in Brewster if he is available on a short-term deal, but the decision to let him leave on a temporary basis is believed to be down to Klopp, and whether he needs him in the second half of the season.

As yet, it is not thought that any official bid has been launched, though with still several weeks to go until the January window it is possible that talks could open up.

Risky to let him leave

Brewster is very highly-rated at Liverpool, and that has been reflected in the way Jurgen Klopp has used him over the last few months.

He first gave him the experience of being in the matchday squad in big matches against Spurs and Barcelona in the Champions League – and was even considering starting him against the Spaniards – and also gave him his first starts for the club in the League Cup this term.

As a result, the club are taking their time to nurture his development and ease him in bit-by-bit, and leaving on loan could, therefore, hinder his development.

There are positives to leaving the club and experiencing a different environment and intensity in terms of how the senior game is played, but there is always a risk that he won’t get the game time he desires, particularly at a Premier League club like Crystal Palace.

A similar player, Eddie Nketiah, an Arsenal striker who is slightly older than the Reds’ player, has joined Leeds this year. Despite his quality and goals from the bench, he is still yet to overcome Patrick Bamford to earn a starting place in the side – with zero starts in the league – and therefore it is possible that he is being held back.

The Reds will be keen to ensure the same doesn’t happen to Brewster, but the only way to guarantee that is by keeping him at the club and monitoring his progress, and that means a loan deal should be avoided.
