'Lazy' Karim Benzema struggling and Nuno Espirito Santo facing the sack! Saudi Pro League champions Al-Ittihad facing a massive crisis

Despite spending big over the summer, the defending champions have slumped to sixth in the table and are in danger of falling out of the title race

Karim Benzema's move to Saudi Arabia obviously wasn't just about football. But he insisted it wasn't solely a question of money, either. Benzema explained that he was not only enamoured with the idea of living in a "Muslim country", but also intrigued by the prospect of a "new challenge" and a "new project".

"I really want to help Saudi football grow," the Al-Ittihad striker stated just over two weeks ago. "I wanted to be part of the story. That's the reason why I came here."

However, Benzema also claimed that while he was fully committed to transforming the Saudi Pro League into something truly special, "the most important thing for me will be to win trophies at the end of the season." Right now, though, achieving that goal is looking far more difficult than expected…

'Historic milestone for a special club'

When the Benzema deal was made official in June, Al-Ittihad president Anmar Bin Abdullah Alhailae quite rightly called the forward's arrival "a historic milestone for this special club". However, it was also a colossal coup for the Saudi Pro League, arguably even more significant than Cristiano Ronaldo joining Al-Nassr six months previously.

Why? Because Benzema was still performing somewhere near the peak of his powers. The same could not be said of Ronaldo, who had been shunned by all of Europe's elite after petulantly forcing his way out of Manchester United because he could no longer get in the starting line-up. A catastrophic World Cup campaign in Qatar tarnished his legacy and did nothing to challenge the belief that Ronaldo was now far more trouble than he was worth.

Benzema, by complete contrast, was the reigning Ballon d'Or holder and, for all his increasing injury issues, had still scored 31 goals in 43 appearances in all competitions during the 2022-23 campaign. Tellingly, coach Carlo Ancelotti was desperate to keep him.

'All eyes will be on Karim'

Benzema, though, turned down Madrid's offer of a contract extension to sign a massive deal with Al-Ittihad, who had just been taken over by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF). The numbers were staggering, but one could understand the thinking behind the transfer. Benzema would add even greater legitimacy to the league than Ronaldo, meaning other high-profile players would follow the Frenchman to Saudi Arabia, and so it proved.

Neymar was the most eye-catching acquisition for Al-Hilal (another club taken over by PIF), but Al-Ittihad further strengthened their 2022-23 title-winning squad with midfield duo Fabinho and N'Golo Kante.

Benzema was obviously the big draw, though. As club president Anmar Bin Abdullah Alhailae said, "all eyes will be on Karim" – and they most definitely were when he made his debut on July 27, in the Arab Club Champions Cup. Benzema didn't disappoint either, scoring the winner in a 2-1 win over Esperance de Tunis.

He proved decisive again in Al-Ittihad's two subsequent group-stage games, against Club Sfaxien and Al-Shorta. Nuno Espirito Santo's side may have then been eliminated in the quarter-finals, but with Benzema having seemingly settled quickly into his new surroundings, the champions looked a good bet to retain their Saudi Pro League title when the new season got under way in the middle of August.

However, while Al-Ittihad won their opening two games without conceding a goal, Benzema failed to score in either victory and, ahead of the meeting with Al-Riyadh on August 24, media outlet claimed that there was tension behind the scenes.

  • 'This is bullsh*t!'

According to the report, Nuno had not been consulted on the signing of Benzema and deemed the attacker incompatible with his tactical game plan. It was alleged that Benzema was "not comfortable" playing under the Portuguese as a consequence, and felt that the coach was not treating him in a "professional" manner. They had also apparently clashed over the captaincy.

The following day, though, Benzema wore the armband against Al-Riyadh and opened his Pro League account with the first goal in an impressive 4-0 win.

Even more significantly, Benzema moved to quash rumours of a falling-out with team-mate Abderrazak Hamdallah, Al-Ittihad's top scorer during last season's title triumph, by handing him the ball following the award of a first-half penalty.

After the game, Nuno also angrily addressed talk of a rift between him and his star player. "I want to clarify one thing," Nuno told a press conference. "I read in the press that my relationship with Karim was not good. Those who know me will know, of course, that this is bullsh*t!

"My relationship with all the players is good. We have a strong group relationship and we are happy with all the players. We are happy that Karim is here with us. He is happy, as you can see on the pitch. He is enjoying playing for Al-Ittihad. I understand where he comes from. But we are a strong group, we are a very strong group."

    Pressure mounting

That may very well be the case, but there have been increasing signs of weakness in recent weeks. The cracks first started to appear at the start of November, when Al-Ittihad lost their 100 percent record by blowing a 3-1 lead in a 4-3 loss at home to their biggest rivals, Al-Hilal, that featured a hat-trick from Aleksandar Mitrovic.

They bounced back with narrow wins over Al-Okhdood and Al-Fateh, with Benzema scoring the decisive goal against the former. However, the titleholders have now failed to win any of their last four league games, which has seen them slump from first to sixth in the table, eight points behind Al-Hilal.

They also required penalties to beat second-division side Al-Kholood in the King's Cup, and though they have since gone on to secure a quarter-final berth in the competition, and have won two from two in the AFC Champions League, their Pro League form has some worried as to whether their title defence is already petering out. Consequently, the pressure is mounting on both Nuno and Benzema.

Liverpool player ratings vs Man Utd: Cody Gakpo delivers Anfield masterclass as Reds destroy old rivals

The Dutchman was the star of the show as the Anfield outfit hammered United 7-0 on a historic afternoon on Merseyside

Liverpool’s Champions League hopes are very much alive and kicking after they sensationally tore high-flying Manchester United apart on a historic afternoon at Anfield.

Two superb goals from Cody Gakpo, two from Darwin Nunez and two from Mohamed Salah, plus an emotional strike from substitute Roberto Firmino, gave the Reds an incredible 7-0 win over their fierce rivals, and moves them up to fifth in the Premier League in the process.

On a quite remarkable day, the thrashing represents the biggest winning margin ever in the fixture, beating the record set all the way back in October 1895, when the sides were competing in the Second Division.

Having scored four and five against United in the league last season, Liverpool somehow went not one, but two better this time.

Spinners, Goswami shine as India defend 142

The New Zealand batsmen huffed and puffed, and eventually fell short of their target of 143 by 17 runs, unable to tackle the Indian spinners in the first women’s ODI in Bangalore

The New Zealand batsmen struggled and scuttled, crawled and scampered, huffed and puffed, and eventually fell short of their target of 143 by 17 runs, unable to tackle the Indian spinners in the first Women’s ODI in Bangalore. Even after reducing India to 87 for 8 within 31 overs, New Zealand allowed the hosts to come close to 150, with Jhulan Goswami’s maiden ODI fifty, and later struggled to get substantial partnerships going in the chase. The win gives India two crucial points for the ICC Women’s Championship as they were at the bottom of the table before the match started. After medium-pacer Lea Tahuhu and spinners Leigh Kasperek and Morna Nielsen bowled impressively in conditions alien to them, to bundle India out, they needed someone more than just Suzie Bates and Sophie Devine to get going in the chase. Debutant Kasperek fought it out till the end with an unbeaten 21, but she ran out of partners as three wickets from Sneh Rana, and two each from Harmanpreet Kaur and Ekta Bisht bowled them out for 125.Tight lines from Goswami and a round-the-wicket angle from left-arm spinner Bisht resulted in a slow start for the visitors. Opener Rachel Priest played out 18 dot balls without opening her account and was trapped lbw by Bisht under pressure. Fleetingly, it looked like Bates and Amy Satterthwaite would cruise through the chase when Satterthwaite creamed a drive through the covers in the eighth over and Bates flicked one off her pads in the next, finally taking the run rate over two per over. But batsmen from both teams could be held accountable for giving their wickets away after going into a shell or hitting full-tosses to fielders. First, Satterthwaite fell to a sharp catch from Smriti Mandhana at short cover and then a mix up between Bates and Kate Broadmore, who also took 13 balls to get off the mark, made the score 38 for 3. New Zealand’s biggest blow came within three overs after that when Bates was squared up by Rajeshwari Gayakwad’s left-arm spin, which beat her leg-side whip, and ended her patient innings on 28.The fifth-wicket stand between Katie Perkins and Devine, the only partnership to resist for more than eight overs, shifted the momentum back by nudging the ball in gaps and forcing the fielders to make mistakes. Mithali Raj tried five different bowlers during that and it finally paid off when Perkins was foxed by a back-of-the-hand delivery from Harmanpreet that turned in sharply. The final dent of the chase came just before the batting Powerplay when Devine cut Harmanpreet straight to backward point for 24. It was only Kasperek’s unbeaten knock that kept them alive for a while from there. Anna Peterson missed a wild slog against Rana and Maddy Green handed a full toss back to the same bowler to make it 110 for 8. Even though Tahuhu and Nielsen struck three fours between them to bring the required runs under 20, a run-out and Nielsen’s catch to short cover made Kasperek a mere spectator to end the match.Earlier, Bates lost her sixth consecutive toss in ODIs but she made the most of her bowling resources. Tahuhu’s offcutters reaped benefits early when one of them found the gap between Poonam Raut’s bat and pad and another deceived Shikha Pandey that was full and quick, to trap her lbw. While Raj looked in good touch from ball one, Mandhana, the other opener, came down the track to break the shackles but was stumped after being beaten in flight by Nielsen. Most of the other wickets were a result of poor shot selection. An almost well-set Raj gave Kasperek her maiden international wicket by smashing a full toss to short midwicket where Perkins took a stunning catch, diving to her right.Kasperek’s flight and drift didn’t give India any room to breathe. Harmanpreet swept to glove a catch to the wicketkeeper down the leg side and Veda Krishnamurthy was trapped lbw, also trying to sweep. Fifty-five for 6 became 87 for 8 in no time as Rana and Bisht also gave their wickets away to full-tosses, both off Nielsen.Goswami’s innings included two parts – she first avoided India from being bowled out for under 100 and then pushed it to nearly 150. For her first 45 balls she relied mostly on ones and twos, and once the batting Powerplay started, she switched gears to show how cleanly she could find the gaps when the situation demanded, mainly targeting the spinners.R Kalpana and Gayakwad, gave her ample support by blocking and leaving plenty outside off for stands of 26 and 29, the top two of the innings. Goswami used her feet to clear the in-field mostly on the leg side and got to her fifty with a four to the square-leg boundary in the 44th over. She followed it by dispatching a full toss to the cow-corner boundary three balls later but was bowled for 57 when she tried to slog Tahuhu, to end the innings on 142.

Isam: Bangladesh won it in style

A maiden ODI series win, and whitewash, over Pakistan. And now a maiden T20 triumph against the same team. Bangladesh have dominated the limited-overs leg of this tour, and added to that narrative with a seven-wicket thrashing in Mirpur.A haphazard batting performance left the onus on the Pakistan bowling again. With only 141 to defend though, all Bangladesh needed was one partnership. That need increased a touch when the score slipped to 38 for 3, but Shakib Al Hasan and Sabbir Rahman steadied ship and shut Pakistan out with a 105-run stand. Both batsmen collected half-centuries and were around for the winning runs to be scored.Their strokes were crisp and both batsmen imposed themselves on the bowlers despite reputation. Umar Gul’s two overs went for 23. Wahab Riaz was clattered for seven fours in four overs and nursed an economy rate near 10. Shakib and Sabbir were together for over 10 overs and the partnership run-rate was 9.84.”They are in such a great momentum,” Shahid Afridi conceded after the match. “We have to learn from the way the Bangladeshi players played”It wasn’t mere generosity either. After Pakistan had decided to bat, the cricket was so ordinary that it appeared the broadcasters had switched from the live feed to a blooper reel. Ahmed Shehzad, beset by rust, spent 10 balls on zero. He went hands first at the ball but could not find it. The defensive bat not working, he decided to hit his way out of trouble. Cue inside and outside edges. Finally, and ironically, the first promising stroke he played led to his downfall. A crisp lift, the elbow high and the head still, ended up in the hands of long-off.Shehzad, a man who hasn’t played for Pakistan in a month was paired with a man playing for Pakistan for the first time. Mukhtar Ahmed appears a power hitter, and despite trying a slog every other ball he walked back with 37 off 30 balls.Afridi hiked himself up to No. 3, for the first time in T20Is since November 2013, missed two balls, and was judged caught behind when there was daylight between bat and ball. The umpires’ two cents to a first hour of cricket that left much to be desired. Afridi even signaled for a review, and was told DRS wasn’t being used for the match.Mushfiqur Rahim evened the scales by missing a straightforward stumping off Mukhtar in the sixth over. There were multiple run-out chances that weren’t converted. The saving grace, though, was Bangladesh’s new-ball bowlers.Mustafizur Rahman, a 19-year old left arm seamer, got the ball to jag around quite strikingly and tormented Shehzad – 10 balls faced, only one run scored. Mashrafe Mortaza hit the off-stump corridor. Shakib’s darts around leg stump frustrated a set of batsmen, who wanted to cane the ball more than hit the gaps. What would hurt Pakistan was despite their constant slogs, there were 52 dot balls in the innings and only one boundary in the final four overs.

Mumbai clean the slate after turbulent season

Mumbai’s coach Pravin Amre is hoping that his pace spearhead Dhawal Kulkarni will be released from India’s touring party in Australia ahead of their Ranji Trophy quarter-final clash, starting from February 15

Mumbai’s coach Pravin Amre is hoping that his pace spearhead Dhawal Kulkarni will be released from India’s touring party in Australia ahead of their Ranji Trophy quarter-final clash, starting from February 15. Amre also revealed that Wasim Jaffer was unlikely to recover in time for the knockouts from a finger injury that has curtailed his appearances to just two games for this season.Kulkarni has been with the India squad after being called up as Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s replacement immediately after the Ranji opener in December. Though Kulkarni hasn’t featured in a competitive game in Australia, he has still been retained with the World Cup squad as a back-up for India’s injury-prone pace bowling line-up.”I am hoping Dhawal will come [back] so that will be our major strength. I believe he is not in the World Cup, so he can join the team. That will be the biggest plus we are hoping [for],” Amre told reporters after Mumbai’s last league game, against Karnataka. “I still don’t think Jaffer is 100 percent. We will wait for the physio’s report. We will wait, we have four days. In today’s times with the modern medicines anything can happen.”Mumbai have had a turbulent season this year. After starting their season with a loss against minnows Jammu & Kashmir, Mumbai folded for just 101 against Railways, their ninth-lowest total ever. Despite surprising Uttar Pradesh in Kanpur and earning three points in Bengal, Mumbai conceded the innings lead to Madhya Pradesh at home.If that wasn’t enough, an unsettled dressing room – the captain Suryakumar Yadav was involved in an ugly spat with some of the other established faces in the team – resulted in Mumbai being humiliated for their first innings defeat in 64 years, on a turning track against Tamil Nadu.As a result, when Mumbai reached Vadodara for their penultimate league game, the players, led by Aditya Tare, were thinking more about avoiding relegation than qualifying for the knockouts. Naturally, Amre had no hesitation in terming the game against Baroda as a turning point for his wards.”The way we played against Baroda, we never thought about thinking whether we will qualify because we could have got relegated if we had lost,” he said. “That was the threat we had and from there for the team to fight back, they showed a lot of character. The Baroda victory gave us confidence that we can beat Karnataka.”Having guided Mumbai to three Ranji titles, Amre felt the league stage will not have any bearing on the knockouts. “I feel that the league is a different tournament and knockout is a different tournament. We are entering a different tournament and we have to take it one game at a time. We are really delighted. The team has shown a lot of character, and everybody has backed each other.”

'Was confident I had it in me' – Hooda

As Deepak Hooda glided Iresh Saxena behind square on the leg side two balls before tea, the whole Baroda dressing room stood up to applaud the 19-year-old’s feat of scoring a century on first-class debut

Amol Karhadkar in Vadodara09-Dec-2014As Deepak Hooda glided Iresh Saxena behind square on the leg side two balls before tea, the whole Baroda dressing room stood up to applaud the 19-year-old’s feat of scoring a century on first-class debut. With his back to the dressing room, Hooda first raised his bat to the far corner of the field before turning back and acknowledging the robust applause of his team-mates and handful of spectators.Behind a tree at the far end, Hooda’s family – his parents and brother – had a sense of fulfilment on their faces. “I had told them before I left for the ground in the morning that I would score a century. I am delighted to have lived up to the promise,” Hooda said after the day’s play of Baroda’s Ranji Trophy opener against Bengal on Tuesday.Having displayed a glimpse of his talent with consistent performances during the Under-19 World Cup earlier this year, Hooda entered the season as one of the youngsters to look forward to. His knock assured that he was ready to absorb the pressure. He admitted that the confidence of having played for India Under-19 and West Zone one-dayers for Baroda last season helped him.”I was confident that I have it in me to perform at the higher level, so I just kept on doing what I was doing all along,” he said. “Obviously there was a bit of pressure at the start of the match but Munaf Patel helped me relax by telling me to treat it as just another game.”The only time Hooda appeared to be under pressure was early on in his innings when he drew the wrath of senior partner Yusuf Pathan due to a mix-up while running between the wickets. But once his nerves settled, he batted like a seasoned batsman and played a chanceless innings.Hooda thus became only the second Baroda batsman to score a hundred on first-class debut after Snehal Parikh, the current joint-secretary, who had scored 104 against Gujarat at home in 1981-82. Three other batsmen have made a century in their first match for Baroda. But all three of them – Raosaheb Nimbalkar (119 vs Bombay in 1938-39), Deepak Shodhan (261 vs Maharashtra in 1957-58) and Ambati Rayudu (200* vs Orissa in Cuttack) – had played first-class cricket for other teams earlier.Despite having come good in his maiden knock at the big stage, a soft-spoken Hooda was disappointed to have “made a mistake” and dismissed off the second new ball. “I should have continued and possibly helped the team get closer to the target,” he said.

More rain pushes back play at USACA Nationals

Steady rain throughout Friday afternoon and evening has caused rounds three and four of the preliminary phase of the USACA T20 National Championship to be pushed back into Saturday morning.

Peter Della Penna in Lauderhill, Florida16-Aug-2014Steady rain throughout Friday afternoon and evening has caused rounds three and four of the preliminary phase of the USACA T20 National Championship to be pushed back into Saturday morning. Group play was scheduled to wrap up on Friday evening, but thunderstorms have prevented more than half the games from being played over the first two days of the tournament. The remaining matches in the group stage will now be played as 10-over games scheduled for 9 am and 11 am on Saturday morning. Weather permitting, semi-finals will take place for 2 pm and the final at 6 pm as originally scheduled. However, if weather continues to interrupt play, then the semi-finals could be scrapped with the two group winners playing in a tournament final to decide the title.”It’s not the ideal situation,” Owen Grey, USACA board member and national championship tournament director, told ESPNcricinfo. “I feel bad more for the players and the regions because they really made the effort to be here, compete and have a good time. It is what it is. We just have to regroup and look into future tournaments when we schedule them.”The summer months in south Florida are considered hurricane season with bad weather and tropical storms a constant concern. Asked if the tournament should have been held in a different location at this time of year instead of the Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill, Grey said that it’s something USACA will take into consideration going forward.”Looking at things and going back to the drawing board, the months of June through September is not ideal to try to conduct a tournament like this. It’s a learning experience. Hindsight is 20/20 but looking at it there are other things we can take into consideration moving forward and it’s something that we’ll definitely evaluate.”
